Diaper debate...

Posted: Sep 17, 2011

Okay, so here it is. I have a very good friend who is expecting. She is low income and has MA, WIC, food stamps, etc. She is slowly buying clothes, furniture, etc. a little at a time before baby arrives around May.  She knows about Goodwill, rummage sales, resale shops, and all that too.  She has other friends as well (who have had children) telling her which diapers are the best. She wants to start buying diapers now so she has a few packs/boxes to start with when the baby arrives. She is very short on money as it is with being a FT student and working PT just to pay her regular bills. Anyway, I suggested to her to buy a pack of diapers each paycheck and stock up. Good idea. Well, then I suggested to her to buy the cheapest diapers she can find, aka Walmart or Target brand or other dollar store brand. Family Dollar where I live has their store brand of 50 diapers for $7. Buy 4-5 packs for the month (or more) and it adds up. I should say I have no children so I cannot really have an opinion, but it seems to me that brand should not matter and who cares if the diapers have cutesy animals on them b/c all they do is get full of pee and poop and get thrown away anyway. My friend wants the best of the best of everything for her (1st) baby, which I understand; however, I am just thinking of her finances and that she will go thru 5000+ diapers in a span of 3 years and I'm trying to save her money. She is really open to the idea, but her other friends are like "this brand is better, no this brand is better" etc. I figure that as long as a diaper does not leak, absorbs the mess, and does not cause a bad rash or allergy then who cares about the brand. Am I wrong? Like I said, I have no children of my own but I have changed many diapers in my life and didn't notice a difference. Another friend of mine would complain about the cost of diapers but didn't like the generics b/c they leaked, okay I get it, but she also did not change him consistently (every 2-3 hours) so I'm not sure if it was just her or the diaper. Cloth diapers are out of the question for her. I want to help her out by buying some diapers but $100 does not go a long way when I'm buying the fancy TV brand.  Anyway, thanks in advance for any advice/help.

my DH and I had money at that time. Twelve years ago, with my first child, the Huggies were so good that you really had to put your hand in the diaper to feel if it was wet. Four years later, with my last child, they were not that absorbent. Back to your point, though, I would choose the cheaper diapers if money was an issue. I'd hate to have to choose between food or diapers. Congratulations and best of luck to your friend!

I would by any generic brand for the newborn phase, size newborn and size 1. You change them every time you feed them and they seldom leak through in that time. As they get older, they drink more and you need something that holds more, because you are not changing them as often. Then I spent my money on Huggies because that is what I fould worked the best for my grandson. He would leak thorugh the Target brand and I ended up doing more laundry and laundry soap is not cheap.

Also, I recommend not buying too many outfits because they grow SO FAST. We overbought and really had no need to. I would not recommend more than 7 outfits in a size and just do laundry more.

U both make excellent points, thanks a bunch... - $$$

Like I said, I have no kids so I did not know about the older babies peeing more, I know that sounded dumb, but I guess I meant that I thought diapers were supposed to be changed every 2-3 hours anyway so I wasn't thinking about size either. I will definitely tell my friend about that. I have other friends who love Huggies as well. I maybe should buy laundry soap for her as well. Thanks again to you both. :-)

Have you ever made your own laundry detergent? I have DIY cleaning wipes and I do my own laundry detergent with Dr. Bronner's soap, salt, and baking soda. HUGE difference in price and it works really well.

There are also bunches of different "recipes" that use grated bar soap such as Fels Naptha Laundry soap, borax, and washing soda. You can either do a "liquid" version or a dry version. It's more work, especially with the grating of the soap, but there are a lot of blog posts that say it's worth it and the cost savings is ginormous. There are a lot of places where you can find the Borax and washing soda (NOT baking soda for this one) in your local store. Ace Hardware carries the Fels Naptha. You can find it all on line, too. Soap.com carries the Borax and the washing soda and if you buy 6 items from them the shipping is free. If you can't find the Fels Naptha something like Ivory will work as well. You just need to stay away from the perfumy "beauty" bars because of the oils and extra stuff they have in them.

I have DIY cleaning wipes made from Bounty paper towels (I use the select-a-size version, but other people just cut a regular role in half) and 3 cups of water and 3 cups of vinegar and about 1/2 cup of Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day cleaning solution. It works out to about 3 cents per cleaning sheet instead of close to 10 for the Clorox wipes. I go through a ton of these with a cat who has IBS and so am cleaning up unmentionables all the time.

Not everyone is into the DIY stuff, but I have found the cost savings to be worth it.

the recipe for the laundry soap? I know you listed the ingredients, but how much of each? Where do you get the Dr. Bronner's soap? Does your laundry smell good? I have a very sensitive nose now that I quit smoking 4 years ago, and I need super good smelling stuff.

Also, where do you store the wipes? Why Mrs. Meyers clean day solution also? Why not Simple Green or something? Are these soaps made in USA? Just wondering. I have been trying hard to buy only USA stuff which is hard, but I am loving the challenge.

I found an amazing online store to buy bath soaps, Oregon Soap Shoppe dot com and they have AMAZING soap and lip balm. Love supporting the small companies!

I'll go ahead and answer here, so anyone else can see who is interested.

Here's a good site for the laundry soap:

http://www.diynatural.com/simple-easy-fast-effective-jabs-homemade-laundry-detergent/

It's 1 bar of Fels Naptha (or any other bar soap you want like Ivory), grated, 1 cup of borax, and 1 cup of washing soda. Mix them all together and keep mixing until you have a fine powder. Use anywhere from 1 tablespoon to 3 tablespoons depending on how soiled the clothes are and the hardness of your water.

This method makes a dry/powder soap which I like better than the liquid for ease of making it. I haven't tried it yet, but it is very comparable to a lot of what else is out there and gets good reviews.

I am using this one right now:
http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/chicago/cleaning/make-your-own-dr-bronners-laundry-soap-138151

I modified it a little bit by using a 3 liter juice jug instead of a gallon jug so it's a little more concentrated and I use a little over 1/4 cup. It works great. I may try the other recipe when I'm done with this just to compare.

I get the Dr Bronner's soap at

http://www.drbronner.com/index.html

but Target sells it and Whole Foods and Trader Joe's sells it as well. It has sort of sticker shock, because one bottle can be $15 but that bottle lasts a very long time and you can use Dr. Bronner's for everything.

I store the wipes in an old tupperware style pasta/spaghetti keeper. It's almost tall enough and exactly round enough for one roll of paper towels. It sticks out the top a little bit, but works really well. Here's something that will give you a basic idea

http://organizedhome.com/clean-house/make-your-own-cleaning-wipes

Cutting the hole in the top was way to much work for me, so I just take the cardboard out of the middle and stick the whole roll in the tall pasta keeper. I use the Bounty Select-a-Size, so I get basically half a sheet each time I pull one out.

I use the Mrs. Meyer's in this because (a) I had it on hand and I like the smell and (b) I wanted to give it a little more oomph. You absolutely could use Simple Green or anything else you have on hand - you just don't want to make it too soapy. You could also use just the vinegar and water. I'm a big fan of vinegar - you can clean everything with it.

You DON'T want to use Dr Bronner's with vinegar, though. Dr Bronner's is a saponified oil soap and if you mix vinegar with it, you're mixing an acid and a base and you essentially take the soap back to it's presoap form which is oil.

I LOVE Dr. Bronner's. I like it more than Mrs. Meyer's. Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day advertises themselves as an aromatherapy cleaning agent. It's very good, but it's VERY strongly scented. Dr. Bronner's uses essential oils. The tea trea is very "woodsy" smelling and not my cup of tea, but the citrus is to die for. It honestly smells like you've just peeled an orange. Love this stuff and the laundry smells fabulous.

Dr Bronners and Mrs Meyers are both made in the USA, I believe. Here's a link for Mrs. Meyers:

http://www.mrsmeyers.com/Products/Hand_And_Body?gclid=CL6r9qLGpasCFRdUgwodKhLbzA

You can find her stuff at Target and WalMart as well.

If you have time, just Google DIY laundry soap, or home made wipes and you'll come up with page after page of different sites that talk about this kind of stuff. It's interesting reading.
I think Dr. Bronners is cheaper at Trader - mthead

Joes. My husband uses the peppermint version in the shower and a little bit goes a long way. Both DH and the bathroom smell so nice when he gets out of the shower, LOL!
Make sure this is okay to use with babies. When mine were babies - cindy
[ In Reply To ..]
I used Dreft. These baby laundry detergents are made so that they do not destroy the fire retardent on the baby clothes. Also babies have very sensative skin. I have very sensative skin as an adult and I was extra careful with my babies and the soap, etc. because of my sensativities. Turns out my old is allergic to everything under the sun, so it was good to be cautious. Of course he is now 21, so not sure if there have been big changes in any of this, but this was told to me by my pediatrician, so I used Dreft, but only for the baby clothes.

Also for diapers, I used the cheapest of the name brands or whichever I had a coupoun for. Eventually, I got a membership to one of the warehouse places and they were much cheaper to buy in bulk there. I have a BJs membership now and I get coupon books from them once a month, so if you or she know anyone with a membership at one of those warehouse/bulk stores, buy a case of whatever you have a coupon for once a month and should be stocked well by time baby comes, but once again, if the baby has really sensative skin, one brand of diapers might give the baby a rash and then she would be unable to use them, so while it is good to stock up, it might be a risk, although slim, but if mom has really sensative skin, baby has much higher chance of it.

As far as the cleaning wipes, vinegar and water is what they all used back in the 50s and 60s and works just fine. I keep a spray bottle, 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water and you can spray on counters, stove, etc and wipe up with sponge (put in dishwasher each time you run it) and kitchen washcloths, etc.

Good luck and look for coupons, coupons, coupons!! Even ask neighbors for their coupons if they do not use the baby one.

I probably would not decide what brand to go with - until after the baby is born.

My first son did great with whatever we bought, so we went with the cheapest of the cheap generics. My youngest son has a tendency toward yeast infections on his bottom and we really can only use Pampers or Luvs. For whatever reason, any of the generics or Huggies cause him to get a bloody rash. I guess every child is different.

If I remember correctly Luvs are the same as - sm - Zorro

[ In Reply To ..]
Pampers (same company makes them) but for less money. I used Pampers and Luvs depending on the coupons I had at the time. Some people bought me generic or cheap ones, I did use them but they were pretty horrible quality wise. I did not like Huggies. I belonged to Costco and BJs then and bought diapers bulk that way to save a little so if you have a membership or she can do a free one-day thing at one she can save some money that way too.

With the first child, I bought all Huggies and ended - up having to take them all

[ In Reply To ..]
back after she was born. When I would get up in the middle of the night to feed her, she would be soaked, and sheets would have to be changed. We went to Pampers, and they did great. I have heard right the opposite from other mothers with huggies versus pampers, so I would agree with the above poster that you probably won't know until after the baby is born. But, you can always take diapers back and exchange them.

Also, if the generics to not hold as well, she may end up coming out better money wise with some of the brand names if she isn't having to change as often.

Coupons - ThriftyMT

[ In Reply To ..]
There are a LOT of coupons out there for diapers!!! She could register at her address and you could also and get a lot of freebies and coupons :) Also, and I don't want this to sound bad...but we would always take a pack from the hospital and I am sure you could ask the nurses and they would let you bring another pack home, too. Every bit helps!!!

I am pregnant with baby #6 and for the first few kids I used Huggies and Luvs, but then I realized that they got cheaper and cheaper and would leak through. I bought some of each with my last two kids and the material that is used is just icky. It's plastic and I would think would be horribly uncomfortable. I am all the way with Pampers. I buy boxes of 100+ diapers at Wal-Mart for $25, plus I signed up for coupons on the Pampers site of which I'm always getting in the mail, along with Pampers coupons being virtually everywhere, in the Sunday paper, they were on the boxes of Cheerios for a while, etc. I am short on money too, but I have found that I buy WAY LESS diapers using Pampers because they absorb crazy awesome and my kids don't leak through...ever!! Not to mention Pampers are made of a "cloth-like" material so they are so soft all the way around and feel good on the skin versus the other brands.

Just bought a case - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I just bought a case of Pampers size 3 186 count for $42 at BJs. I had a $5 store coupon, so I paid $37. These will last about 3 weeks. I just used the last of the Walgreens brand my husband bought and they were okay. We did have a few soak throughs, so honestly I really cannot say which one was better. I good gift for your friend might be a membership to BJs or whatever club store. I get my formula there too and it is markedly less expensive than at the store. Babies do cost an arm and leg, but they are worth every penny!

Do they even make... - Betti

cloth diapers any more? That's all I ever used. I used the disposables when we went on trips. At home, all my kids were in cloth diapers...but then my "baby" is 36 with 3 of his own.

You wouldn't recognize them! - New cloth diapers

[ In Reply To ..]
Not only do they still make cloth diapers, you probably wouldn't even recognize them. My DIL uses them and they come complete with cute patterned covers (forget rubber pants) and snaps or Velcro (forget those diaper pins!). They have inserts for extra absorbancy and liners to dispose of messes.

Wow... - Betti

[ In Reply To ..]
they've come a long ways...LOL

I used to have to put 2 cloth diapers together and I did use the diaper pins which would sometimes accidentally break and poke my babies. I cried more than they did. I still have my 41-year-old daughter's pink pins. Must be nice. My DIL uses the disposables exclusively.

I use cloth-Bumgenius and they are genius! - as for disposables..

Whey they were tiny I loved Pamper Swaddlers. Now if I use disposables I use Target up and up brand. They are great.

Target brand Up&Up is BEST ever IMO!! - DiaperMaMa

[ In Reply To ..]
I will never ever use anything other than the Target brand ever again. I recommend this to everyone I know who is having/has a baby, even people i see in the isles who are about to spend double on huggies or pampers. Out of everyone i know who have tried the target brand, they all love them! With my first son I used huggies, pampers, luvs...i don't know what I was thinking!! I never have any leaks with the Up&Up, they hold everything in!! My son is 1 1/2 and in the size 5 diapers and they are wonderful. Can't say enough about them!! They are $19.99/box for 100+ and I don't seem to be going through them like crazy like we did with the other brands. They don't smell at all, and they don't have the little gel balls that I think Luvs has, if they get too wet your baby has gel balls all over? Not just the diapers either, the wipes, and even the formula I used. SOO GOOD! Can you tell how much I like the brand? haha...

Wow! Thanks to all for the replies... - $$$

Good advice from everyone, thanks so much! I'll keep that in mind if I ever have a baby. I was thinking of buying either samples of each brand out there or the smallest pack of them for her to compare. I've seen online for sample packs for like 99 cents for 1-2 diapers but only for the name brand. I myself prefer cloth and know about the different companies out there for them, and am still trying to convince her otherwise, but it's her choice and I respect that.

On a grosser note, I was talking to another friend about this and she said think of diapers like tampons, you can buy the cheapees but you may have leakage problems and go through more of them and end up buying more of the cheaper tampons in the long run, so it's better to spend the money on the name brand and they last the same amount of time or longer b/c you don't have to change as often. (sorry for the gross out factor, but she made a good point). I have bought the cheapee tampons before and have noticed a difference so I do spend the money on name brand for that. Anything else I use, wear, eat, it's generic all the way b/c I don't care.

Anyway, does anyone know of a website where you can order samples of every brand of diaper? I also looked online this weekend for websites she could sign up for to get coupons and discounts and even freebies. She did not know about any of that and was really happy that I told her about the websites. We live in WI and as far as I know about superstores, we have Woodmans and SamsClub. Thanks again everyone for all of the advice and helpful hints. I really had no idea that diapers were that big of a deal! LOL.

For samples, keep an eyeball on this: - Hayseed

[ In Reply To ..]
http://instoresnow.walmart.com/In-Stores-Now-Free-Samples.aspx

It's Walmart and they cycle through different free samples of all sorts of stuff including diapers. I've been getting free samples of different things for a while now to give to anyone who wants them. The only downside to their samples is they usually only offer 1 or 2 sizes, very rarely newborn from what I've seen, but still fun to have on hand to compare and ya can't beat free!

I too am going to be in the market for diapers (due in November...maybe) and although I will be using those cloth diapers simply for the long-term savings, I guess I have to use disposables for the first month or so due to the super sensitive newborn skin thing.

My neighbor is a baby FREAK and runs a daycare. She said the Target brand diapers are just as good as the name brand ones. Or, if you find you prefer a name brand, to maybe buy through Amazon.com if you can get in on the free shipping deals.

I'm being told to prepare for something like a MINIMUM of 7 diaper changes A DAY. Holy crapola batman!

Good luck out there. We're all gonna need it!

Congratulations!!! - (sm)
