WOW! Heard about the new book Bob Woodward is coming out with-

Posted: Sep 6, 2012

It sounds like a good one. There is so much more in this report from Yahoo! on his interviews with both Obama and Boehner. Diane Sawyer is going to interview BW on September 12. That's an interview I'm definitely going to watch.

An explosive mix of dysfunction, miscommunication, and misunderstandings inside and outside the White House led to the collapse of a historic spending and debt deal that President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner were on the verge of reaching last summer, according to revelations in author Bob Woodward's latest book.

The book, "The Price of Politics," on sale Sept. 11, 2012, shows how close the president and the House speaker were to defying Washington odds and establishing a spending framework that included both new revenues and major changes to long-sacred entitlement programs.

But at a critical juncture, with an agreement tantalizingly close, Obama pressed Boehner for additional taxes as part of a final deal – a miscalculation, in retrospect, given how far the House speaker felt he'd already gone.

The president called three times to speak with Boehner about his latest offer, according to Woodward. But the speaker didn't return the president's phone call for most of an agonizing day, in what Woodward calls a "monumental communications lapse" between two of the most powerful men in the country.

When Boehner finally did call back, he jettisoned the entire deal. Obama lost his famous cool, according to Woodward, with a "flash of pure fury" coming from the president; one staffer in the room said Obama gripped the phone so tightly he thought he would break it.

"He was spewing coals," Boehner told Woodward, in what is described as a borderline "presidential tirade."

.....and how Woodward found out the following :

Obama's relationship with Democrats wasn't always much better. Woodward recounts an episode early in his presidency when then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid were hammering out final details of the stimulus bill.

Obama phoned in to deliver a "high-minded message," he writes. Obama went on so long that Pelosi "reached over and pressed the mute button on her phone," so they could continue to work without the president hearing that they weren't paying attention.

;

That WILL be interesting. I remember when it was happening. - Boehner had a power problem, as I recall, and

was less leading than trying to deal with the dictates of various aggressive conservative groups he couldn't control. He's more than once reminded me of a mother cat trying to deal with a litter of full-grown alley cats.

Addendum: I was JUST COMMENTING, not trying to offend anyone. Yes, any president who doesn't have a working majority in Congress and an actively hostile opposition party does have his own power problem too.

Pay attention. Obama had the "power problem" - - not Boehner.

Although the press likes to characterize Boehner as having less authority than he does, the fact is that if you look at the votes in the House, you'll see that he's done JUST FINE keeping the troops together. In fact, I suspect that he's done better than you probably like.

It's not a power problem - is a leadership problem - or lack of, when it comes to the president.

I was already aware that the mutt Obama pushed Boehner too - far on the debt deal.

Look - this is a FUNDAMENTAL principle with conservatives: YOU DO NOT RAISE TAXES IN THE MIDDLE OF A RECESSION. You cannot TAX your way out of the crisis - PERIOD.

Boehner was NOT going to "compromise" this fundamental principle but Obama thought he could paint Boehner into a corner by telling the public that the Republicans were "obstructing" the debt deal - to put pressure on them to raise taxes.

He did this for two reasons, one philosophical and one political. Philosophically, Obama has a profound disrespect for private enterprise and sees the government as the primary source of economic activity and recovery. If you want more economic activity, you send more money to the government.

Politically, Obama also knew that if he could get the Republicans to cave on tax increases (as they've done in the past), they would suffer enormous outrage at the hands of the voters in the next election cycle.

Obama: Wutta mutt.

Woodward's Book Should Finish Obama.Sep 06, 2012
When he took office (by Woodward's account, not mine - and he's no conservative), Republicans greeted him with genuine goodwill.  Eric Cantor (R) was among the leaders called to the Oval Office 3 days after the inauguration.  He arrived with several ideas, including (PLEASE NOTE, DEMS): 1.  LOWERING the BOTTOM TWO TAX BRACKETS. 2.  MAKING UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS NONTAXABLE. Obama rejected these and other ideas before Cantor could even finish delivering them, and h ...

was wondering if anyone else has read and what they thought.  Heresy or enlightening?  For a while now, I've been looking for a deeper, more personal relationship with God, but haven't been able to find it.  I hear testimony from fellow Christians about this wonderful relationship they have with God.  How they talk to Him and they can feel His presence and He responds maybe not verbally, but they "hear" Him.  So a friend, who isn't a churchgoer but spiri ...

Obama Has The Book Thrown At HimOct 11, 2010
This is the astonishing moment a book was apparently hurled at the head of President Barack Obama during a campaign rally in Philadelphia. The flying missile narrowly missed hitting the President yesterday. A book narrowly misses Barack Obama's head after it is thrown on stage during a rally in Philadelphia today ...

Book Review - Game ChangeFeb 10, 2010
