Someone never seems to take into account the people who have fallen off the unemployment rolls or those who have just stopped looking altogether. There are a lot of factors involved in these numbers. I want to believe it is true, but I don't. This administration is just too deceitful for my taste.

That someone is the - the BLS

[ In Reply To ..]
not the administration. Regardless of who sits in the Oval Office, the BLS has always calculated monthly unemployment rates without using off the roll numbers, which are reported separately for good reason. There is no measure of which of those workers have actually stopped looking for work, returned to school, gone to part-time by choice or retired from the work force. IMO, playing believe-it-or-not with trusted BLS numbers could be motivated by a different kind of deceit.

Don't you know he controls everything?

2) He rigs our monthly jobs reports to make himself look better: Yes, a man who has no connections to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics managed to infiltrate the process by which they calculate jobs numbers so that they would make the economy look better on his watch. And he’s done this for nearly six years without a single member of the BLS exposing his deceit. - See more at: http://www.forwardprogressives.com/10-conspiracies-prove-republicans-think-obama-powerful-human-whos-ever-lived/#sthash.imG36V41.dpuf

We have a lower percentage of the American workforce participating in the labor market that at any time since 1978, and this is a very large reason that the unemployment numbers have come down.

Millions are also counted as "employed", when in fact they are underemployed. The real unemployment rate, called U-6, remains near 12%.

Over Obama's term, the median household income has dropped by nearly 8%, and the gap between the top 1% of earners and the lowest 25% of earners has widened by almost 37%. Meanwhile, prices for consumer goods have been rising at almost double the expected rate.

Oh, yes - and those "jobs"?? Government hiring has been accounting for a substantial portion of the so-called "new jobs" created in the past 6 years - while the government has accumulated a debt that will soon approach $20 trillion in an effort to shore up the economy - a bill that WILL COME DUE. Some of the jobs created, paying $15 to $20 an hour, COST NEARLY A MILLION DOLLARS EACH to create.

If people want to roll over for Obama's smooth campaign talk, I guess that's your business, but it doesn't mean you have to be easy.

Nearly 70% of the American public now says that the US is headed in the wrong direction. You owe it to yourself to ask, if everything's so great, why doesn't it feel that way? There must be a reason - and it turns out that if you bother to look, you'll discover that the reason is that figures lie, and liars figure. When Obama quotes you numbers, you owe it to yourself to ask yourself the NEXT question - and there always is one.

Your last paragraph says it all. - sm

In addition, I read that only 24% of Americans feel better off than when BO took office.

On closer inspection of those claims - sm

Lower percentage of Americans participating in the workforce since 1978 is Obama's fault or could it have anything to do with cumulative effects of trade agreements, outsourcing, advances in technology and such?

U6 rates in 2009 with W's Great Recession in high gear was 16.1; in 2011 it was only down to 15.9;  two years later in 2013 it was 13.8.  If it's 12% now, that shows a drop of 1.8% this year.  In other words, momentum of this recalcitrant measure has picked up faster than earlier predictions.

I don't know anyone who think Obama or democrats for that matter are responsible for the widening income gap between the 1% and the lowest 25% earners.  Case in point.  Has it been blue or red states that have raised the minimum wage?  Which party historically argues against it, votes it down and campaigns against it?  Who is it that continues to extend corporate welfare and cut taxes for the wealthy at every turn?  How did Candidate 47% lose in 2012?

It rally is disingenuous to claim "government" jobs account for a substantial portion of new jobs without mentioning that local governments have added the most, followed by state governments and that the federal government job numbers have contracted.  75,000 lost in 2013.  It is even more disingenuous to present that data without comparing it to the jobs added in the private sector.

Here is the historical data from the US Dept. of Labor Bureau of Statistics.    Funny how the last big (and highest) spike was under the Reaganomics regime. As you can see, it isn't as high yet as it was then.  I predict it will peak roughly where it did then and will start to go back down as it did then.  If it keeps rising and does not show signs of a drop, then I'll panic.  After all, most conservatives think Ronnie was wonderful don't they? &nbs ...

Is it possible that somebody receives SS benefits and at the same time also unemployment payments?  My neighbor tells me that he receives both. My question is:  Is there an age limit for receiving unemployment benefits?  I doubt that this man, aged 80, is looking for a job!  He told me that he is so happy looking for ...

A Possible Unemployment Solution?Nov 04, 2010
A financial pundit, James Galbraith, suggested:  We have a large cohort of people who have been displaced by a major economic crisis,” he says. “It's utterly ridiculous to make them subsist on unemployment insurance, when in fact, there aren’t going to be jobs.  This is not a temporary condition for a great many people.” Galbraith claims lowering the retirement age would solve that problem. It's a win-win, he says, allowing those nearing retirement a ...

Why Did The Unemployment Rate Drop?Dec 02, 2011
I think the most encouraging part of this report is in the last paragraph. The U.S. added 120,000 jobs in November, but the unemployment rate posted a huge drop to 8.6% from 9% and a broader unemployment rate fell even more to 15.6% from 16.2%. Why? The number of jobs added comes from a survey of establishment payrolls. The unemployment rate comes from a separate survey of U.S. households. The household survey is much smaller than the establishment survey, and as a result it can swing around a ...

Economists had expected a more modest 15,000 to 20,000 job increase and that the rate would remain at 8.1 percent. It's the second biggest gain ever recorded by the agency in ...
