Unemployment drops....

The number of unemployed dropped in November. Could this be because of their checks stopping on the 28th of December? Finally have to go out and find a job - doggone it.....

In our wonderful industry, I have been unemployed 2 times. I had mortgage payments and heat bills. Luckily I had unemployment until I could find another job. While the economy certainly is recovering, there are still pockets that have not recovered. There are still people out there who might not be qualified for the work that is offered. I know for a fact, that the older you get, the harder it is to be hired. To think that the Republican Tea Party would vote to make people struggle in this especially harsh winter is just unthinkable.

You would think based on the premise that they don't really want jobs they would have waited for November's check and maybe even December's. Maybe they got jobs as psychics on a psychic hotline.

I'm not sure where you get your news from, but here is one source. There are many sources - just google unemployment ends December 28th and choose your source.
If you knew that your December paycheck would be your last, I would hope that you would have been looking for a job in November and if you found one in November, I would like to think that you took that job and didn't turn it down because you still had one more check coming in December.

Nowhere did I question that long-term unemployment benefits would end on 12/28. I questioned the motive you assigned to the 1.3 million who will lose their benefits and your personal determination of the reason the unemployment rate dropped.

My previous neighbor is one of those 1.3 million. She lost her job at the age of 58 after working her entire adult life. She lost her car because of inability to make the payments and moved to a less expensive apartment. Perhaps you think you can live a life of luxury on 1/2 your previous salary, but she has had no health care for hypertension and asthma and runs out of food. We live in a small rural town with no public transportation, let alone jobs. Do you really think she said, oh, whoops, my benefits might end on 12/28 so I better get off my duff and get a job? A nonexistent job at the age of 61.

I think unemployment is down because most of the unemployed have given up on finding a job and are living off welfare. Therefore, there are less unemployment benefit checks, but more welfare (or social services) checks. Jobs are still scarce in most parts of this country. Some businesses are trying to employ more people by cutting the hours of some of their employees--which, in most cases, will result in the employer not having to pay health insurance benefits, etc.

Is it possible that somebody receives SS benefits and at the same time also unemployment payments? My neighbor tells me that he receives both. I think it is possible, but this man is 80 years old and lost his job 16 months ago and is since then collecting unemployment and social security benefits. I think the most encouraging part of this report is in the last paragraph. The U.S. added 120,000 jobs in November, but the unemployment rate posted a huge drop to 8.6% from 9% and a broader unemployment rate fell even more to 15.6% from 16.2%. Why?
