Abbott and Costello Discuss Our UNEMPLOYMENT Figures...

COSTELLO: I want to talk about the unemployment rate in America.

ABBOTT: Good Subject. Terrible Times. It's 9%.

COSTELLO: That many people are out of work?

ABBOTT: No, that's 16%.

COSTELLO: You just said 9%.

ABBOTT: 9% Unemployed.

COSTELLO: Right 9% out of work.

ABBOTT: No, that's 16%.

COSTELLO: Okay, so it's 16% unemployed.

ABBOTT: No, that's 9%...

COSTELLO: WAIT A MINUTE. Is it 9% or 16%?

ABBOTT: 9% are unemployed. 16% are out of work.

COSTELLO: IF you are out of work you are unemployed.

ABBOTT: No, you can't count the "Out of Work" as the unemployed. You have to look for work to be unemployed.

COSTELLO: BUT THEY ARE OUT OF WORK!!!

ABBOTT: No, you miss my point.

COSTELLO: What point?

ABBOTT: Someone who doesn't look for work, can't be counted with those who look for work. It wouldn't be fair.

COSTELLO: To who?

ABBOTT: The unemployed.

COSTELLO: But they are ALL out of work.

ABBOTT: No, the unemployed are actively looking for work... Those who are out of work stopped looking. They gave up. And, if you give up, you are no longer in the ranks of the unemployed.

COSTELLO: So if you're off the unemployment roles, that would count as less unemployment?

ABBOTT: Unemployment would go down. Absolutely!

COSTELLO: The unemployment just goes down because you don't look for work?

ABBOTT: Absolutely it goes down. That's how you get to 9%. Otherwise, it would be 16%. You don't want to read about 16% unemployment do ya?

COSTELLO: That would be frightening.

ABBOTT: Absolutely.

COSTELLO: Wait, I got a question for you. That means they're two ways to bring down the unemployment number?

ABBOTT: Two ways is correct.

COSTELLO: Unemployment can go down if someone gets a job?

ABBOTT: Correct.

COSTELLO: And unemployment can also go down if you stop looking for a job?

ABBOTT: Bingo.

COSTELLO: So there are two ways to bring unemployment down, and the easier of the two is to just stop looking for work.

ABBOTT: Now you're thinking like an economist.

COSTELLO: I don't even know what the hell I just said!

And now you know why Obama's unemployment figures are improving!

Let's go back 3 years ago:

In 2009, President Obama said, “Look, I’m at the start of my administration. One nice thing about the situation I find myself in is that I will be held accountable. You know, I’ve got four years. And, you know, a year from now I think people are going to see that we’re starting to make some progress, but there’s still going to be some pain out there. If I don’t have this done in three years, then there’s going to be a one-term proposition.”

article...When speaking at a campaign fundraiser on Wednesday, President Obama said, “When I said 'change we can believe in' I didn't say 'change we can believe in tomorrow.' Not change we can believe in next week. We knew this was going to take time because we've got this big, messy, tough democracy and that’s a great thing about America is that there are all these contentious ideas that are out there and we’ve got to make our case.” And, when he was campaigning he did say he could not do it in 1 term. This goes to show you how willing hie is to be accountable for his actions..unlike Bush for example.

And, we can go back and forth all day long - sm

3,939,000 jobs gained since depression trough - Almost 4 million with Obama

[ In Reply To ..]
Unfortuneately, Bush lost almost 5 million jobs and the last month of Bush's fiasco is charted as occurring the first month of Obama's term.

According to the Republican spin, you would have to blame Obama's first month on Obama. The Republican spin on this gives me whiplash.

Hysterical.... and simply not true. Obama only - delayed a recovery and caused debt

Having my coffee and seeing today's discussions. We have replaced the Hitler-is-Obama with Abbott and Costello. Who pays people to research and write this stuff? Only a madman would do it for free. Further down I see the amigos are having the vapors over a flag somewhere. Not really important, but gives the gals a chance to exercise their umbrage and great love of the cloth that represents the country -- the people who inhabit it? Not so much. Looking forward to reading all your flames tomorrow. Have a good day.

Here is the historical data from the US Dept. of Labor Bureau of Statistics.    Funny how the last big (and highest) spike was under the Reaganomics regime. As you can see, it isn't as high yet as it was then.  I predict it will peak roughly where it did then and will start to go back down as it did then.  If it keeps rising and does not show signs of a drop, then I'll panic.  After all, most conservatives think Ronnie was wonderful don't they? &nbs ...

A Possible Unemployment Solution?Nov 04, 2010
A financial pundit, James Galbraith, suggested:  We have a large cohort of people who have been displaced by a major economic crisis,” he says. “It's utterly ridiculous to make them subsist on unemployment insurance, when in fact, there aren’t going to be jobs.  This is not a temporary condition for a great many people.” Galbraith claims lowering the retirement age would solve that problem. It's a win-win, he says, allowing those nearing retirement a ...

Why Did The Unemployment Rate Drop?Dec 02, 2011
I think the most encouraging part of this report is in the last paragraph. The U.S. added 120,000 jobs in November, but the unemployment rate posted a huge drop to 8.6% from 9% and a broader unemployment rate fell even more to 15.6% from 16.2%. Why? The number of jobs added comes from a survey of establishment payrolls. The unemployment rate comes from a separate survey of U.S. households. The household survey is much smaller than the establishment survey, and as a result it can swing around a ...
