More good news regarding unemployment

Posted: Dec 9, 2010

The Labor Department reported that first time claims for unemployment benefits dropped last week to the second-lowest level this year. Claims fell to 421,000, below the 428,000 figure that Wall Street expected.

The four-week average of claims also slid for the fifth straight week, reaching the lowest level since August 2008, before the darkest days of the financial crisis.

Perhaps because more jobs available.... - no thanks to Democrats.

[ In Reply To ..]
because the jobmakers felt more secure that the Democrats were not going to hike their taxes in a down economy.

But whatEVER the reason, I am happy for the people going back to work, as I am sure they are.

Also...another reason could be that people who had run out had not filed again because they did not know if benefits were going to be extended.

I guess we will see with the next round of figures. Still....I do hope it was because some people were able to go back to work.

Did the tax bill go through, for sure? - nm

Uh huh. That's why unemployment is up in my state? - Backwards Typist

Our county is back up to 11%. In a full year, our state has added a whole 700 jobs since last October. That's an awfully small number of jobs for the population, and most of those jobs are in retail (think Christmas hiring).

Can't wait to see January's numbers. I'm sure it's going to be great-Not!

Of course your state is representative of the entire country. - me

rates. But, of course, we are all free to comment on our own state at any time. It doesn't change the overall figures.

Business Week seems to differ.

Pennsylvania's unemployment rate fell for a third straight month in October, as employers added nearly 16,000 jobs to their payrolls.

The state Department of Labor and Industry said Thursday that unemployment dropped by 0.2 percentage point last month to 8.8 percent. That's below the national rate of 9.6 percent.

it just makes me wonder... sm - sadie

how much of this statistic reflects the number of folks no longer qualified to receive the benefits due to being unemployed for so long. Unfortunately, I know 3 people in my small circle of friends to whom this has happened. :(

If that's not part of the statistic, though, YAY! That's very good news!

I think any improvement is good news. - nm

I hope your friends are taking advantage of the help for retraining for better jobs. Good luck to them.

kind of you to say -sm- - sadie

Two of them are not... I couldn't begin to say why since I'm in the same mindset as you. However, one of my friends did - the entire time he was receiving the unemployment benefits he was back in school to complete his degree, and was hired with a school system in another county as a high school history teacher! All good things... :D
My husband also went back to school - and has a good job now
[ In Reply To ..]
It was hard and scary. He was able to get help with his tuition, but we still had our family expenses, transportation, etc. But he did it, it was difficult, but so worth it! I would like to go back to school, but when I add up the numbers it just does not work.

I need to wake up... - sadie

since I obviously missed seeing the part of the statistic indicating this was "first time claims"... Excuse me while I freshen up my coffee... ;)

"Claims fell to 421,000, below the 428,000 figure that Wall Street expected."

Fell to 420,000 from what, 421,001? They don't say what it fell FROM only what Wall Street was EXPECTING it to BE. More specultation from Wall Street - just like they did for oil and look what that did to our gas prices!!! This is nothing concrete. Just more hyperbole. Folks, that's still 400k of new people claiming benefits. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!

Our unemployment figures are more smoke and mirrors. There are so many people in my state who aren't accounted for due to a) not being eligible for unemployment and/or b) already maxed out. My county's UE rate is ridiculous at 15% and not going down. And this is for those that are accounted for. The state is at 14.2%. With the unaccounted for taken into consideration, my state sits at about 21%.
