A financial pundit, James Galbraith, suggested:
We have a large cohort of people who have been displaced by a major economic crisis,” he says. “It's utterly ridiculous to make them subsist on unemployment insurance, when in fact, there aren’t going to be jobs. This is not a temporary condition for a great many people.”
Galbraith claims lowering the retirement age would solve that problem. It's a win-win, he says, allowing those nearing retirement age to gain Social Security benefits to help pay the bills; and more importantly, it opens up the labor market to younger workers currently crowded out by the large number of 50 and 60 year old workers vying for the same jobs.
;A professor at the University of Paris with local ties works in France and she explained what and why France is in such turmoil over raising their SS age. Turns out hardly anyone can get a job before they're 30 and those 50 and above are considered not employable and usually lose their jobs. They don't believe in pensions and put their money into real estate and something else. Their SS is all they have.
I wish I would have kept that article to quote directly from it. It also mentioned something about jobs. I can't remember if she said they don't have manufacturing jobs like we do or what. I tried to find it in the local paper archives and also through Google but coudln't come up with it. It was very interesting and gave insight into France's problems. I wondered why they were so up in arms over uping the age for SS and I now have better insight on the aspect.
