Why not have some of those on unemployment... - sam

[ In Reply To ..]
take a minimum wage job and let the government supplement between what they make and what their unemployment was. What if we all just got tired of being taxed to death and all quit and decided to draw unemployment. Who is going to pay it then?

There are thousands of people who will not take a job paying less than their unemployment. They will tell you that flat out. How have things gotten so turned out around it pays more to not work than to work? Unemployment should never pay MORE than minimum wage when there are people out there working at minimum wage. That is just not right.

I would be all for extending it in some fashion...but we can\'t do it ad infinitum....so give these people a job and supplement the income from the job...then maybe it would just cost 3 billion instead of 6 billion.

It is a legitimate question.

Do you have statistics to back that up? - nm

On 10/21/10 an article said:

MSNBC features a story today on how some people are finding it more lucrative to stay on unemployment benefits than get a part-time or low-wage job.

http://www.mlive.com/michigan-job-search/index.ssf/2010/10/some_find_unemployment_pays_better_than.html

Here's another article by MSNBC that says "For Some jobless benefits trump a job"

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39693099/ns/business-eye_on_the_economy/

Here's an article that gives percentages (again MSNBC) - 55.3% say it would not make sense to take a job paying less than unemployment.

http://business.newsvine.com/_question/2010/10/20/5323711-would-you-take-a-job-if-it-paid-less-than-unemployment-benefits

Those are all I could find right now, but then again I haven't done a lot of research, just a simple google search will pull up other articles.

Where do you propose to get a job? - Backwards Typist

There are people out there that have been looking for over 2 years. Even minimum wage jobs have been scarce. It's only now that there are a few job openings and most are just seasonal for the Christmas season.

Don't forget all the high school and college grads that haven't found anything yet which gluts the market even more and don't forget that some of the unemploymed are above the age that companies want to hire.

I had trouble finding a job at age 40 when my company went out of business. It took me quite a few months to find another one. I got all the excuses. Over-qualified for this job, under-qualified for that job. In reality, it was my age, yet since it's a law you can't discriminate against age, they had to use some other excuse. It wasn't easy then so I can see the problems most of the unemployed are having in this day and age.

As for things being so turned around, blame that on the Unemployment Office and Social Services. Unemployment tells you, or at least they used to tell you, that you don't have to take a job less than what you earned and not outside your expertise. Social Services usually wants everyone on food stamps,Medicaid and welfare to stay on it. They practically beg you to stay on it.

I do agree it can't go on forever, but there has to be enough jobs for the people before they can get off the unemployment train-to-nowhere, and with 9.6% unemployment, where are some ideas, especially for those on the cusp of 'age discrimination'? I just saw a 50-yo man competing with 20-somethings last week for a minimum wage job at a ski resort. What were his chances? Well, the interviewer stated 1000 people applied for that one opening, so he had 1 change in 1000. Not good odds.

Okay...if no job at all can be found, not even a minimum wage one, which I doubt.... - sam

then keep those people on a full check. However...even if half of the people could find a job and then let unemployment supplement THAT, we could still save billions. My point is...WHY not at LEAST try something to SAVE some money at some point and not just keep writing checks? We can all agree it has to stop sometime. Well, make it gradual. At least when it HAS to stop some of those people will have SOMETHING. Because if the Democrats persist in doing what they are doing to American businesses, things are NOT going to get better, they are going to get WORSE. If nothing else, put some of these people to work on all those infrastructure jobs Obama was going to create. What happened to that?

All I am saying is please stop the status quo. Try to find ways to SAVE money instead of spending it hand over fist. There are projects in every town in this country that could be done that are not being done now because towns/counties are broke. Well, let the federal government put some of these people who are out of work doing some of those jobs.

The thing is, nobody is trying to FIX the problem. They just want to extend the band-aid.
I thought you were against "stimulus" funds? - nm
[ In Reply To ..]
I am, and I was...why spend MORE in stimulus when the first round... - sam
[ In Reply To ..]
did not work. The first one was supposed to make a lot of jobs through rebuilding the infrastructure...didn't happen. All I am saying is, he already spent the money, and no jobs. So, now instead of paying unemployment, put the unemployed back to work on those jobs the stimulus was SUPPOSED to have created, and pay these people to work instead of unemployment, so the income can be taxed and they can add to the tax base instead of continuing to be a drain on it.

Why is that a problem for you? Why should that be a problem for ANYONE who is supposedly looking for work?
I hope you don't mind if I quote you. - sm

"There are projects in every town in this country that could be done that are not being done now because towns/counties are broke. Well, let the federal government put some of these people who are out of work doing some of those jobs."

I believe that was one goal of the stimulus.

The stimulus did work. Any real economist knows that jobs were saved that would have been lost.

Thanks for quoting me...and what I said was correct... - sam
[ In Reply To ..]
those jobs (infrastructure jobs) are NOT being done because the stimulus did NOT work. They still NEED to be done. So why not, instead of extending unemployment benefits, put those people to work doing those jobs and get that work done that the stimulus FAILEDD to do.

Not sure about any real economist, but if you can show me just one job that was saved by the stimulus, that would be great. Then we can talk about the ones it lost...all those car dealerships that went bust, those small business owners and the people they employed, the local economies that suffered when sometimes the only car dealership in their town went under...

Any real economist without bias (if one exists) would see that in terms of jobs gained and jobs lost, the stimulus did not work.

You need to diversify your research... - Many jobs were saved
[ In Reply To ..]
and created. You won\'t hear about this in detail on the news whether it be liberal or conservative programming. Many of the infrastructures jobs were created under infrastructure spending from the LAST administration\'s budget and this spending was renewed. There are hundreds of infrastructure jobs being carried out - my home town of Asbury Park is the infrastructure/stimulus package in action. Fed stim $ was distributed as local govt grant $ in order to get this badly needed work done around town.

The USDA created jobs that turned into permanent work for many people, via Fed stim $.

A higher paycheck, via UI benefits, will get bills paid, groceries bought, gasoline and other goods purchased more so than a minimum wage pay check.
Guess I should have been more explicit.... - sam
[ In Reply To ..]
the millions of jobs promised did not come through. Still extremely high rates of unemployment and looking at a 3rd extension of benefits.

Okay. Fine. Then do away with minimum wage on those jobs, and all these unemployed, let them do the minimum wage work, just pay them the UI benefits taxed at the appropriate level so they can contribute to the tax base. That would be fine also. At some point, the UI has to stop. We can't sustain it indefinitely. Or move them over onto the welfare rolls, which pay almost as good as UI.

You would not mind working in some capacity if you got the same amount of money for it as UI would you?

Last I knew, you paid taxes on unemployment. Just saying. Maybe that has changed. Not making excuses for lazy people who collect unemployment instead of working when they can, just saying I have heard people say they pay taxes on unemployment. I wouldn't know, I have always worked.
disagree - sm

Disagree with you on the part of stimulus not doing anything. In my state, many road construction jobs were done with the use of stimulus money.

I sometimes think you live in a different world than I do. Not trying to put you down, but where you seem to live there are lots and lots of jobs and nothing being done with stimulus money. In my town, road construction happened and there are not very many jobs.
