This morning I was awoken by my alarm clock

Posted: Mar 25, 2010

powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the US Department of Energy. I then took a shower in the clean water provided by the municipal water utility. After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC regulated channels to see what the National Weather Service of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration determined the weather was going to be like using satellites designed, built, and launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. I watched this while eating breakfast of US Department of Agriculture inspected food and taking the drugs which have been determined as safe by the Food and Drug Administration.

At the appropriate time as regulated by the US Congress and kept accurate by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the US Naval Observatory. I get into my National Highway Traffic Safety Administration approved automobile and set out to work on the roads built by the local, state, and federal departments of transportation, possibly stopping to purchase additional fuel of a quality level determined by the Environmental Protection Agency, using legal tender issued by the Federal Reserve bank. On the way out the door I deposit any mail I have to send via the US Postal Service and drop the kids off at the public school.

After work, I drive my NHTSA car back home on the DOT roads, to a house which has not burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and fire marshal's inspection, and which has not been plundered of all it's valuables thanks to the local police department.

I then log on to the internet which was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration and post on freerepublic.com and Fox News forums about how SOCIALISM in medicine is BAD because the government can't do anything right.

So, I dont trust the Govt to start ANOTHER huge program to monitor me and my family and what kind of health care we get. It IS SOCIALISM. It IS a bad idea. We should fix what is broken first, not ignore it and add another failed program!!!

You can't even consider Germany which has the oldest universal health care on the planet and is a capitalist country can you? Nope, all you can think of is the word "socialism." Oooooooohhhh! It's the end!

And that makes it good somehow. LOL Are you one of the rich (able to afford your insurance) or one of the poor (get it free)? ;)
Distinction is that it has lasted this long and hasn't - imploded

It's obvious you couldn't pick up on that simple distinction. Hope this helps.
Violence has been around.... - nnn

since Cain killed Abel. Doesn't make it right and it doesn't mean it's good for society. Funny you didn't pick up on that. ;)
Wha? um, you don't think an implosion is violence do you? - oh lordy

I was using violence as an "example" of something that's been around for a long time. Just because something has been around for a long time, doesn't make it good. Just because something hasn't imploded doesn't make it a success. If this is too difficult for you, you should run along home. I think I hear your mother calling. ;)
lol! Okay, well that analogy implodes upon itself. - Rofl

How long violence has been around and whether a healthcare system has worked well for a long time? Yeah, good one. rofl You'd better leave, I hear your mother telling you to go away.

on that one. Just because the Bible has been around for a long time doesn't make it good, or (cough cough) true.

Same with our old healthcare system, now that I think of it! Hmmmm.....
Ask them what? - LK
[ In Reply To ..]
About their health care? Most of my family lives in Australia, including my Dad and sisters. One of my sisters had breast cancer, and under Australia's public health care program, she was going to have to wait 6 months before she could get the mastectomy she needed. If I had cancer I wouldn't want to twiddle my thumbs for 6 months and pray that my cancer wouldn't spread. They have a two-tiered system, though, and she paid privately to have it done sooner. So even there, those with money can get what they need, those that don't have to wait. I'm not saying their system is horrible, but that's the facts - it's all rationed, and it's far from ideal. By the way, they pay very high taxes to fund their health care system, as do other countries with socialist leanings.
How do you think she would have fared here if - she
[ In Reply To ..]
were not covered by private insurance at the time of her diagnosis?
Pretty much the same, but with lower taxes. - LK
[ In Reply To ..]
She didn't have private coverage there, either. She doesn't have a lot of money. It was wait or pay up, so she paid up, with help of family members. Poor people get health care here, too, but they get it through the ER, a very inefficient way to provide services. Nobody is turned away. I don't disagree that there is a problem with our health care system, but there are problems in other countries with public plans, as well. I think cost cutting needs to be at the root of the solution, and that's not present to any significant degree in the current health reform plan.
Oh, I guess the insurance she was able to get even with a pre-existing - condition cost the same
[ In Reply To ..]
or more than the treatment? Maybe I misunderstood. Maybe she wasn't able to pay for better coverage because of her pre-existing condition and went ahead and paid in full for her treatment? Or maybe since she was covered under the public plan, it wasn't considered pre-existing. Sorry for so many questions, I'm really curious about this. Thanks!
An attempt to answer your question - LK
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not sure exactly how they classify pre-existing conditions under the Australian system, but I don't think they treat them any differently. You just pay extra to get faster or more high-tech care. My step-mother who lived in Australia until she died of cancer last year also paid about $20,000 out of her own pocket to pay for an expensive chemo drug that the government plan refused to pay for. With the two-tier plan, those that can afford better care get better care, and those that don't at least get some care, but it is at a much more basic level. I don't see anything particularly wrong with that, in fact pretty much all countries with the exception of Canada that have a public health plan do it that way. It is kind of interesting stuff - I wish our politicians would have taken the time to really research what is working in other countries instead of just ramming this jumble of changes through for reasons of political expediency.
Thank you for your reply - :)
[ In Reply To ..]
So, basically, the citizens do not have to pay for healthcare, but just have increased taxes. I looked this up and it does not appear that the increase in taxes comes anywhere close to the cost of premiums. And there is no cap of course.

And, in Australia, you can also get private insurance if you choose. If you are diagnosed with a disease that is going to cost a lot of money, then you can tier up to private insurance without the risk of being refused on grounds of pre-existing condition.

Private insurance here denies many of the chemo drugs, and brand name drugs unless there is not a generic, (deciding a cheaper one would be fine, etc.) and all experimental drugs, so depending on the drug, the denial would happen here too.

I hear Germany is now going to go to this two tier system. I know a perfect system does not exist and never will. I believe; however, that this country is so full of people who have an horrific phobia about "socialism" per se. It's a buzz word they use and they don't realize just how much is already "socialized." It appears they also don't realize the system here in this country is as bad as it really is and think that all people regardless of situation receive the care they need. It is just not true.

Thanks again for your response. Appreciate it. :)

Those things are what the gov't SHOULD do! - LK

And they do a reasonable job at it. It's when they start mucking around in social/financial/health entitlements that they make a horrendous mess of it. I want them to administer public works and services such as infrastructure, police and fire protection, and the like. But look at their attempts to legislate social and health programs - not so good. They are trying to reach farther and farther into areas that they do not belong, and this is where my beef lies. We need government, we just don't need them everywhere.

The Infamous Irving, TX Clock, Challenging The Story'sSep 22, 2015
The original story was about a controversial package in a school setting, but it was quickly claimed to be a homemade clock. If not, the world may be propping up a plagiarist who flaunted the piece of crap in an intentionally controversial way (suppositions). This video challenges that the clock was homemade by showing a nearly identical package being prepared in about twenty seconds (screws and simple fastener ...

I'm just curious about how many of us working at home have the same routine. I get up in the morning and immediately heat up bottled water for coffee (I use a French press which makes a really perfect cup of coffee), then hop in the shower.  After that, I make my coffee and drink it while taking about 10 minutes to put on my mineral makeup (so much faster than the other kind of makeup), eyeliner, lip liner and lip gloss.  I then blow dry my hair, get dressed, make a second cup of ...
