Stimulus money tracker

To take a look at where the stimulus money is slated to go, how much has arrived so far, and what it's being used for IN REAL TIME, check out this interactive map at MSNBC.

It gets interesting when you look at what's happening around your area. On the left, look at the drop-down box for "Contract stage" and pick "Awarded". Then click your state on the map, and check out your county and the counties nearby.

Not a lot of the money has gone out yet. Anyone know why? Specifics would be appreciated. Uninformative rants will be ignored.

I'm going to email my senators/rep and ask.

I, personally, find it quite interesting to see where our money is being spent -- guess you might call that the "transparency thingy" LOL

The reason a lot of awards haven't gone out yet is because they usually have a set time to bid then a set time to open bids. If the bids are not to their liking, or over the amount they want set, then they go out for re-bids. It can sometimes takes a couple years for the projects to get going.

For example, DH knows of 2 projects that have been up for bids for the past 2 years. They haven't been awarded to anyone yet. There's a project in my county that was awarded a year ago and they are now just starting. Of course, it has to wait for spring now.

One thing I did notice is that the government is estimating the amount of jobs created. They only thing that bugs me about that is that most of those jobs will still be temporary, so I wish the government would correct those figures, or do they think the jobs; i.e., window replacement, sewer replacement, road projects, etc., will go on forever? (no answer necessary) I can just picture a road crew just standing around 8 hours a day, 5 days a week doing nothing for the next 4-5 years.

My brother, a licensed plumber in Maine, moved from job to job for years on end. Sometimes he went out-of-state. He seemed to like it when he was younger, but later he found a job at Bath Iron Works (ship-building) and settled down a bit.

I think the jobs in the stimulus package were meant to be temporary. It's just to get things rolling again. Get people working, get money going back into their pockets, get the economy back on track. From there, things pick up on their own.

Good info on why things take so long, BT. I'm still waiting to hear from Sherrod Brown and Betty Sutton (e-mailed them late last night). I'm thinking of keeping the email queries up and asking the leftie organizations to get involved, too. Maybe a flood of sustained emails will grease the wheels. *shrug* Worth a few minutes of my time, for sure.

It was only 9.7% in May 2009, and in December, it was 10.9. This doesn't include those who ran out of benefits. I just can't imagine how many are really out of work here. jobless unemployment benefit recipients, requiring ALL 9.8 million of them to pee on demand before their checks can be released. Why is this even being discussed (statement/not question). I read the article and I don't like it. Even when it's not the lack of it, but more the equality in spending it.
