Scores Of Republicans Who Oppose Stimulus Sought Funds In Private Letters

Posted: Oct 17, 2010

This is really disgusting. I can't understand why people can't see through some of our Congressmen.

Rep. Pete Sessions, the firebrand conservative from Dallas, Texas, has relentlessly assailed the Democratic-passed stimulus law as a wasteful "trillion dollar spending spree" that was "more about stimulating the government and rewarding political allies than growing the economy and creating jobs."

But that didn’t stop the Republican lawmaker from reaching his hand out behind the scenes to seek stimulus money for the suburb of Carrollton after the camera lights went dark and the GOP campaign against the 2009 stimulus law quieted down.

The affluent city’s rail project is “shovel-ready,” Sessions wrote Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in February, urging his cabinet agency to give “full and fair consideration” to the city’s request for $81 million in stimulus money, according to a copy of the letter obtained by the Center for Public Integrity. Ironically, his letter suggested the project would create jobs, undercutting the very public argument he has made against the stimulus.

“Carrollton’s project will create jobs, stimulate the economy, improve regional mobility and reduce pollution,” the lawmaker wrote.

When asked about the letter, Sessions suggested to the Center that he did not want his “strong, principled objection to the bill to prevent me” from getting his congressional district its share of the massive spending pot.

Sessions was hardly alone.

Scores of Republicans and conservative Democrats who voted against the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act subsequently wrote letters requesting funds for projects in a massive, behind-the-scenes letter-writing and phone call campaign, documents obtained by the Center show.

Those asking for money include Tea Party favorites like freshman Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown and Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., former presidential candidates Ron Paul and John McCain and Republican congressional leaders like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana.

Individual people who are republicans AND democrats.

There are hypocrites on BOTH sides. Try focusing on the individual person who does the wrong, don't lump everyone into the same group.
OK Each one of the scores of pubs who opposed stimulus funding - while asking for it are hypocrites.

Just like each one of the democrats who are hypocrites when coming to pay taxes.

And the democrats who put out negative and hate-filled campaign adds then whine that the republicans are putting up negative ads.

And the democrats who are okay with yelling "liar" during a President Bush speech but are not okay with a republican who said "that's a lie" at an Obama speech.

And the democrats who say they want an open administration but are okay with the closed door deals and secret meetings if its only in their party.

And the democrats who accuse the republicans of cutting social security and medicare when they are the ones cutting it.

There you go....hypocrites are on BOTH sides.

Out of curiosity, can you name those republicans who asked for stimulus money and the circumstances as to why they asked for it. I have not been able to find anything on that except left-winger articles regurgitating that same statement, but yet giving no names or circumstances. Just curious on that one.

I didn't read any of your links for the simple fact is it backs up what I've been saying...hypocrites are on both sides. I don't think there is any denying that.

You can post all the links all night of the republicans who are hypocrits and I can post all the links all night of the democrats who are hypocrits.

You proved my point...hypocrites are on BOTH sides. You can't say well republicans are hypocrites or democrats are hypocrties because then you lump them all together and I think there are good and bad on both sides. Each politician should be taken as an individual. You can't say all democrats are bad because Obama or Pelosi or Reid are because there are some good democrats. I voted for them even though I knew they would not make it, but you also can't say all republicans are bad because Bush or others are. Each person needs to be discussed on an individual basis.

I think we will agree on the key issue though. Hypocrites are on BOTH sides.

Thanks for your post.
So if you can post links all night long, why didnt you? - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Please confine you links to examples of similar hypocrisy, the kind where a party obstructs policies til the cows come home, denounces said policies in media outlet interviews as an economic and jobs creation boondoggle, then goes home and tries the bait and switch of TRYING TO TAKE CREDIT for those same policies which they have been obstructing and denouncing by saying how good the policy has been for the economy and jobs creation. Forked tongues personified, then cubed exponentially.

I don't think you understood my message. What I meant was I could post links all night because there are a ton of them, but I'm not going to go down that road because it's a cat and mouse game. I post 5 links, you post 5 links, I post 5 more links, you post 5 more links, I post more links, you post more links, etc, etc, etc.

Like I say...hypocrites are on both sides. I would say if you really want me to post links I will, but to tell you the truth it's 11:30 pm and I'm tired. The links are out there, but it's such a waste of time. Especially because I'm sure no matter what I post there will be those who will say whatever the link it it's not credible, all the while posting from uber-liberal sites like Huff, bloomberg, etc. (sites I don't find credible).

So we will just have to end it with the knowledge that there are hypocrites in BOTH parties. Talk individuals here, not groups.

I took the time to provide you with the information you wanted, and now you are just too lazy to look at it. We don't agree on anything, especially on having common courtesy! Do your own research in the future instead of wasting other people's precious time!

Your cut and paste ability is astounding. Thank you for providing what I already know I wrote.

The reason I asked for names of the people is because it does not appear that you even know what their names are or what the circumstances of them asking for stimulus is. You are just posting uber-liberal left-winger sites. Most of which are not credible. Bloomberg...no thanks. Huffington Post...what an insult...no thanks. Maybe John Ferrell can be trusted. I haven't done enough research on him to know whether he is up and up in his reporting or if he lets the party line tarnish his thinking.

So, the reason I asked you for the names of the politicians and their circumstances is because I don't believe you know who they are or the circumstances as to why they are asking for stimulus money. Why they are asking for it plays a huge roll.

If you want to talk about having common courtesy, all I can say is at least I have the common courtesy to not make posts personal and tell you that you are lazy and call you a hypocrite. When I wrote I kept my comments about the politicians.

But, here's a little courtesy for you and some research...

Democrats (too many to name individually) speak of Republicans being in league with wall street and big business, when in fact big business have always been in favor of democrats and supported the democrats.

For 8 years we heard the constant incessant whining from liberals, on how their rights were being usurped and trampled on and eroded, etc, etc. Now with yours truly in and our rights being usurped and trampled and eroded we don't hear anything. Not a peep.

The democrats screamed and yelled at Bush's Patriot Act and they are completely silent while Obama has continued on with it.

The democrats screamed and shouted it took Bush too long to respond to Katrina victims (3-4 days). Yet it took 9 days to respond to the Gulf disaster and again, not a peep from the hypocrites democrats.

Then there is the incident of then Sen Obama, Biden, Hillary, and Reid who spoke against reconciliation. But when they want to push through their health care vote they were pushing it and with reconciliation.

Then there is tax cheat Geitner and the democrats not paying their taxes.

Charlie Rangel cited in ethics charges, Maxine Waters, Barney Franks, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, etc, etc, etc.

Like I say, I could go on and on and on.

No, we don't agree on anything, especially when it comes to common courtesy. In my standards common courtesy does not include insulting other posters because you don't want to hear the simple truth, and you certainly don't want to do any "balanced" research.

Like I said before and I'll say it again...hypocrites are on BOTH sides.

If you want the names, just read the article - that's the subject of this post.nm

Why post any links about tax rates, or anything that makes sense for that matter, when you won't read anything you don't want to hear?

Rich people and taxes: They have expensive accountants and tax lawyers who can provide "tax shelters" for their income. Have you heard of the Cayman Islands? They show their income as coming from countries that don't charge foreign income tax, and their liabilities in countries that do. If a family forms a corporation, basically everything is a tax deduction from the cars they drive, their restaurant tabs, the travel expenses. Why do they fight any changes to things like the Capital gains tax? It would be closing a loophole for them.

Really, I don't think Paris needs my help, but the family down the street who can't afford to take their kids to the dentist (even though they both work very hard) could use a little break.

I don't know why you seem to really hate poor people, and please don't even try make those silly echo-chamber Rush Limbaugh statements. Everyone, in their hearts, knows it is all B.S.
What are you talking about - think you posted to the wrong person - see message
[ In Reply To ..]
I have no idea what Paris Hilton has to do with any of this. I didn't mention her in my post.

Not very many democrats in congress who are poor. Rangel, Clintons, Obamas, Dodd, etc, etc, etc. Don't think any of them fall into the poor category. Those 2% rich the democrats are always whining about...those 2% rich ARE the democrats. They are the ones not paying rent, hiding their money in the Cayman Islands, getting all those tax loops. Sorry, but the democrat party is not filled with poor people.

It's pretty hard to hate poor people when you are one of the poor, so don't know where you even think that. Second I don't listen to Rush Limbaugh so I don't know what statements you are referring to.

It's pretty bad when posters "assume" to know other posters.
I try to count everything I can on my taxes is that - wrong?
[ In Reply To ..]
This is a job field full of independent contractors, and of course, we count every little penny that can possibly be counted. Do you realize how many people in this country receive the earned income tax credit? That means they recieve everything they have paid in a get a huge chunk back on top of that. I mean seriously the top earners are the one paying the majority of the taxes, and the lower earners are getting back tax dollars that they never even paid in, and people are still complaining. We need more, more, more. I agree middle class American could probably use a little bit of help, but I have not seen anything worth while from the Democratic side.
If you are a republican yes its wrong. If you are a democrat no, its okay - anon
