Money can't buy everything

Posted: Mar 5, 2010

While having a general discussion with my 16 years old DS, I used a famous quote "Money can't buy everything" and he said come on Mom, it's a quote from 80's. Now iit has been changed to "Those who say money can't buy everything don't know where to shop".

What's your take on it?

;

So where would one shop for happiness? Or love? - Or their lost youth? nm

My take - - just me

1. If you are sick with a terminally ill disease that no matter how much money you have, you can buy your health back.

2. Money can't buy me the peaceful and happy feeling I have from petting my cat, watching her lick her paws and rubbing her head against my head.

3. Money may buy you some drugs or alcohol and sure you'll be happy while doing it, but you sure can't buy your way out of the feeling when coming off the drugs or alcohol.

There are more examples, but it really is not a quote from the 80s. My grandmother used to say that in the 60s, and I still hear it now a days. Money cannot buy everything.

Here's a good one. My cousin is filthy rich. She drives a nice car, has a nice home, and spends money on clothes that would feed a family for a week, but she is never happy. It gives her a "feel-good" for maybe the first half hour or so after buying, or maybe until she gets to show off her new outfit, but then it's over.

It's true there are very important things that money cannot buy, but it's hard to be happy when one does not have enough to keep up with his/her bills or afford proper health care (even if you are loved) ... and a decent outfit and pair of shoes when going out helps too!

Let's face it, it's a mixed bag.

true, money can not buy everything, BUT - money makes happy

it makes life A LOT easier.

Would you choose to be healthy and poor, or rich and sick?
Sure, healthy and poor. but until you get, maybe, rich, you will be sick.

Would you rather be a poor, sick man or a rich, sick man?
Sure, a rich, sick man.

Life is all about money and sex.

But you can.... - mb

Money can't buy happiness, but you can buy a boat and sail right up next to it!

Isn't that a Johnny Depp quote?? - sm -

I believe he was talking about his private island....must be nice, guess I just need to win a huge Mega Millions jackpot or Powerball!

never knew a day of poverty, never knew what it is like to not have money to buy Christmas gifts for their children, or buying good healthy food to feed their children, or buying clothing to clothe their children, or being able to pay their bills, and I'll just bet they never had a credit score so low they couldn't buy a candy bar on credit. I'll bet they never drove around in a junk car that breaks down all the time. I'll bet they were fit and lean and healthy because they had the money to purchase healthy food. I'll bet their face wasn't full of wrinkles at a very early age because of financial stress. I'll bet their children weren't angry because of never having any money to do anything or go anywhere or buy the basic of necessities just to survive. I'll bet this person never had to stay at a job that paid slave wages and no work because there was no other way out. True, money is not the end all be all, but it sure as hell helps.

Amen to that (nm) - mtmt

Men And MoneyJan 05, 2012
As a single women nearing 50, and having MANY male friends, there is one observation that just MUST be made. Men constantly complain that women are "only after (my) money," yet all of the men whom I know well who are even moderately "successful," whether married or single, have male friend(s) whom they fork money over to constantly.  Usually these take the form of "loans" that are NEVER actually repaid.  I don't know if my married buddies tell their wives about these "loans" or ...

New MoneyOct 06, 2010
Why is this even being discussed (statement/not question).  I read the article and I don't like it.  The current crowd (progressives/socialists) gets in and all of a sudden there is talk of new currency (and on top of that the currency that does not look real, which I'm sure the uber-wealthy will not be giving up their "greenies", but the rest of the country will be made to use this new fad paper).  Maybe this has been talked about before, but it's the first I' ...

Fed Wants Their Money Back?Mar 31, 2011
By LIZ MOYER And DAVID BENOIT  from WSJ online. One of the biggest secrets of the financial crisis was disclosed Thursday when the Federal Reserve released thousands of pages of data showing heavy discount-window borrowing by foreign banks, regional U.S. banks and institutions fighting for survival. It was the first time the Fed has given details about banks that borrowed from the central bank's oldest emergency-lending facility. Thursday's move was forced by lawsuits filed by B ...

Asking Husband For Money.May 11, 2011
I don't know about you all, but I HATE having to ask my husband for money, for anything! I make enough money to cover my personal expenses and the household bills and he pays the mortgage, loan on the cars and his personal expenses.  We take turns buying the monthly groceries.  It comes out pretty even, the only differences is, he has left over money from his check and I  do not. I stopped asking years ago because he'd give me the "where did all your money go" with att ...

Why Does Money Have To Be Such An Issue?Jun 23, 2010
Even when it's not the lack of it, but more the equality in spending it. My DH gets very upset and defensive when I suggest to him that he has a whole lot more money in his checking account than I do in mine, yet I'm paying ALL the household expenses, all the vet bills, and ALL the remodeling expenses on the house. He'll make some lame excuse, and then he closes up, shuts down, and sulks. I have more than enough to live on, but that's not the point. I've decide ...

Saving Money With CouponsDec 06, 2009
Hey ladies - I have a new website that is a great help in saving money while using coupons.  It is called thegrocerygame.com.  It does cost a nominal fee after the first month, but I have found it so worth it.  I think it is about a dollar a week plus the cost of buying your newspapers weekly to get the coupons.  It really works good for you though. I had never used coupons until I was at my sister's last week and she had a closet full of stuff that she was st ...

MOVE YOUR MONEY DAY! Do Yourself A HugeNov 05, 2011
I've been talking about it, and today I did it.  I took my money out of the big national bank I'd been with for over 20 years, Greed-of-America. The bank that had hidden fees up the wazoo.  The bank that charged me overdraft fees, even when I never overdrew my account. The bank that continually raised its minimum balance to a point where I was getting more money siphoned out of my account, even though I couldn't afford to put any more in, which is why I fell below the mi ...

Giving Kids MoneyFeb 21, 2013
Parents out there, how do you give your kids money, like how much and what all do you provide for them?  My son is 13 and my daughter is 9.  We had my son a cell phone for years, but lately we decided to cut back the $250 bill, so I told him to use the home phone. I still let him take my cell if he goes somewhere, so that I can contact him.  The kids never really got allowance until recently and I give my son $40 dollars per month and my daughter $20 dollars per month.  They ...
