Yet, Rick Perry's Texas gobbled it up - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Turns out Texas was the state that depended the most on those very stimulus funds to plug nearly 97% of its shortfall for fiscal 2010, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. What a waste.

Well, Perry did something right, since TX created - over 30 pct of new jobs!!! nm

poverty population in the country, highest rate of minimum wage earners, first in adults without high school diplomas. Twenty-six percent of Texans have no health insurance — the highest percentage of medically uninsured residents of any state. It leads the nation in the percentage of children who lack medical insurance. Texas has an inordinate number of employers who provide no insurance to their workers, partly because insurance rates are high, thanks to an absence of regulations.

For more exciting details of some powerfully inconvenient truths about what Perry has really "created" for the once proud people of the Lone Star in his race to the bottom:

And left $9.1 billion "Rainy Day" fund untouched, created - specifically to mitigate budget shortfalls

in general revenues. He accepted the fed's bucks despite his alleged disdain for bail-outs and stimulus plans:

On August 13, while on the SC campaign trail, Perry cleverly echoed typical T party wails and whines, "Washington's insatiable desire to spend our children's inheritance on failed 'stimulus' plans and other misguided economic theories have given us record debt and left us with far too many unemployed..."

In his 2010 book, Fed Up! The Fight to Save America from Washington (written for a much more colloquial audience than the 2012 presidential campaign electorate) gov slick pontificates, "We are fed up with bailout after bailout and stimulus plan after stimulus plan, each one of which tosses principle out the window along with taxpayer money."

Principles, schmiciples. That Rainy Day money could have twice bankrolled the $4 BILLION in cuts to education made in the last legislative session. Never mind that Texas ranks DEAD LAST at #51 for its high-school dropout rate. Perry evidently has higher priorities than attacking this national embarrassment.

My favorite example of diversion of stimulus funds (aside from the $556 billion in stimulus funds for education he turned down in one of his more memorable political grandstand performances) has to do with the gov's residential expenses. $11 million in initial stimulus funds went toward repairing the arson-targeted governor's mansion. A modest sum, perhaps, to some, but Mr&Mrs Big Hair's choice of temporary rental housing...not so much. It costs $300,000 per year for rent, utilities and "upkeep." Since Fall 2007, that comes to just about $1,200,000 so far.

This humble little 6386-sq-ft shack up on 3 acres in God's country (Barton Hills, on the eastern ascent of the gorgeous Edwards Plateau foothills) has 5 bedrooms, SEVEN baths, a gourmet kitchen that employs 3 gourmet chefs, and 3 dining rooms, with pecan wood floors throughout (whew!). Kick in another $260,000 or so for parties he threw, an average of $65,000 per year.

Perry's state-paid expenses at the home for the past 4 years include approximately $36,000 for "consumables" such as household supplies and cleaning products, $1,001.46 in window coverings from upscale retailer Neiman Marcus, a $1,000 "emergency repair" of the governor's filtered ice machine, a $700 clothes rack, and a little over $140 for a two year subscription to Food & Wine Magazine. In the first 2 years, maintenance on the heated pool cost taxpayers at least $8,400, and the tab for grounds and lawn maintenance topped $44,000.

By comparison, the Texas governor's mansion is wholly owned by the state - there is no rent or mortgage to pay. As currently configured, it has about 9,900 total square feet, but most is public space packed with historic artifacts. Only 2,750 square feet is dedicated to the governor's residence.

A question of priorities, you see.

It tickles me how the cable pundits are trying to grapple with their acquaintance with the new-kid-on-the-block. This morning they were trying to make excuses for his clumsy, rootin'-tootin' wild-bull-out-of-the-corral presentation to a breathless national audience. They think he learned his lesson about his crude and essentially stupid campaign rhetoric, and are waiting to see him "walk it back" a bit. Little do they know that Perrys is just getting warmed up. The media is totally clueless about just what kind of a ride Perry has in store for them, especially when that 25-year collection of political scandals comes tumbling out of the closet and onto their desks! When gov ricky-boy unleashes his inner sidewinder, it ain't pretty.

Too bad that Republicans would rather support the oil and NG fracking industries - Important stuff.

[ In Reply To ..]
We need government support of green energy. Some projects as major as this have to have government support, not Republican obstructionism. Look at the rural electric initiatives--when would electricity have to come to the rural areas if it had not been supported by FDR's adminstration? Were there any private companies willing and able to do the space initiatives back in the 60s? How about the Hoover dam and the interstate highway system? Our bridges are collapsing, our infrastructure is crumbling. We need to get out of the dark ages and out from under the thumb of the oil companies and political obstructionism.

This green energy fiasco is such a loser. What - a joke. ..and Obama could not lead the boy scouts.

in about 10-15 years.

Our planet's resources are dwindling, at the same time our species is multiplying like rodents, and continuing to use everything up and not replace it. If we keep on depending on fossil fuels, cutting down all our forests, overfishing the oceans, and causing another species to go extinct practically every day, eventually we're all going to end up having to eat each other.
Not to mention the manmade "help" it gets - like the BP oil spill. nm

Obama Stimulus Funds Went To California Feb 20, 2017
The 2009 stimulus package funded millions of dollars for safety improvements for a dam in California that was in “good shape,” but not to the Oroville Dam that is now on the verge of a spillway crisis. Nearly 200,000 residents north of Sacramento were ordered to evacuate after fears that erosion would cause the emergency spillway to fail, which would lead to “catastrophic flooding“ from a 30-foot wall of water. Despite more than a decade of warnings about Oroville, there is no publ ...

Judging Stimulus By Job Data Reveals SuccessFeb 17, 2010
Imagine if, one year ago, Congress had passed a stimulus bill that really worked. Let’s say this bill had started spending money within a matter of weeks and had rapidly helped the economy. If that had happened, what would the economy look like today? Well, it would look almost exactly as it does now. Because thos ...
