Cold/virus causing vile breath?

Posted: Nov 23, 2010

On Saturday night, my boyfriend and I went to a friend's house for a pre-Thanksgiving gathering.  While there, I noticed that his breath was exceptionally rank (I could be standing 3 feet from him and smell it).  After pushing gum several times and him turning it down, I finally had to tell him his breath was terrible.  He chewed gum, but it never really got better.

On Sunday, he started not feeling well...like he was coming down with a cold.  Yesterday, he felt worse.

Last night (this morning) I woke at 2 a.m. to that horrible smell again.  I tossed and turned and finally left the bedroom around 4 and went to the couch.  A little later, I went back through the bedroom to go to the bathroom, and the whole room smelled that way.  He's a mouth breather when he sleeps.

Anyhow, I know strep can cause bad breath, but this is not that smell...it's different than that.  Very pungent....very bad.  I was just wondering what else it could be?  He has now migrated next to me on the couch.  I love this man, but I swear to you, it smells so bad that it's making me nauseous and I don't have the heart to tell him how bad it TRULY is...and I don't think he's going to work today.  HELP!! :)

When I have to tell someone (family member) about their breath, I usually say, "Your breath is pretty strong today." It seems the word "strong" is the mildest way to put it. Then I suggest they floss. Good luck!

Gosh, the last thing I want to suggest is something serious. - alabaster

However, I remember once my mother had a boss whose breath was vile. He smoked and drank coffee a lot, but the culprit of the foul odor turned out to be esophageal cancer.

If your BF has sinus drainage, maybe he has tonsil stones. I get them, as do my kids. The drainage gets trapped in the tonsils and dries out and hardens, creating little greenish yellow nuggets that smell really bad, as they are full of bacteria. Smells kinda like poo. He should be able to detect that himself though. I always know when I have some some trapped. He could just have something caught in a tooth though, and flossing might work.

Thanks to you both. - He did end up going to work today

even though I thought for sure he was going to stay at home.

He isn't running a fever or anything, so I'm hoping this is just a cold or some bug. I will definitely be keeping a close eye on him.

I was very delicate before he left, but I think he figured it out on his own. Shortly after I typed my message, he went back into the bedroom and then came out with a weird look on his face and asked me if the bad odor in there was from his breath (and was that what I meant the other night when I kept trying to get him to chew gum). Apparently he really couldn't detect it himself.

I told him that his breath wasn't smelling the greatest and that it was probably because he was sick (and the other night was the beginning of his illness). He brushed, flossed, and gargled with mouthwash before leaving for work. I hope it's better tonight!

I know he feels bad enough, I don't want to hurt his feelings :). But it really was awful to the point that I couldn't stand to be in the room with him any longer. If it continues to be this bad, though, even after flossing and brushing, I will insist on a trip to the doctor, especially if he doesn't start to feel better.

I'm crossing my fingers that I don't get it!

my son had strep once and had no sore throat symptoms - long time CMA

He had rapid strep and cultures sent to the lab and they were negative. The only symptom he had was a rash all over his chest and stomach. The doctor said it was a classic strep rash but the cultures were negative. A few days later, he has a high fever and strep tests were still negative but he also seemed dehydrated, so they sent him to the hospital. They did more throat cultures that were negative, blood work to check for strep that was negative and a chest x-ray for strep pneumonia and that was negative. He just got sicker and sicker, so even though he testing negative for any type of strep, they treated him for strep and he got better. So my opinion is that if this bad breath came on suddenly and when I was a nurse at the peds office, that was a classic sign of strep, bad breath, I would still go to the doctors and keep a close eye on his temperature. Good luck!

It could also be gingivitis Has he been to the dentist for a professional cleaning recently? If you talk with him about it perhaps his primary doctor can determine the source. Good luck!

SEIU Causing Trouble Again-Apr 02, 2015
McDonald's voluntarily raising wages in their restaurants but the workers want $15. Doesn't matter that McD's will also be giving better benefits, they aren't happy. It's all about the SEIU. They want in and the employees have been suckered into breaking the law (civil disobedience according to the police). So, here's my suggestion: Let the federal government set the wages and what it is, it is. Then let McD's tell the employees if they don't like it, they ...

Trump Is #2 And Causing DivisivenessJul 04, 2015
If Trump is what the Republican people want, as indicated by him being #2 in the polls, it is a sad state of affairs and one that the Republican party may very well not recover from during the election process.  He is, in effect, putting out a call to the hatred in the Republican party and giving it the green light for the people to express their hatred also.  I don't think he will encourage more to join this way of thinking, they are already out there, but he is coalescing a good ...

German Federal Supreme Court: Measles Is NOT A VirusJan 26, 2017
This is the strangest vaccine story I have ever come across.  Several scientists proved successfully in Germany that measles is NOT caused by a virus.  The case was heard before the German Federal Supreme Court (equivalent of our U.S. SupremeCourt).  The plaintiff was a biologist, and he was awarded monetary damages. Reseachers in the past decades committed a critical mistake:  They used no controls.  As a result, components of regular cells were misidentified as vira ...

Florida ColdFeb 19, 2015
At the risk of getting tomatoes thrown at me for those people in the north, here in SW Florida, we're not used to cold weather. It's 56 today, and going into the 30s tonight. I can't stop shivering. The heat in many of the homes is not efficient at all (it shouldn't have to be!), and our windows and doors aren't insulated. We have an open floor plan and high, vaulted ceilings, so heating it is almost impossible. And it's windy out so all the cold here is coming in t ...
