Anyone here raise chickens? Have lots of questions

Posted: Jun 2, 2010

I would love to raise some chickens but DH is against it. He hates them, says they're ugly, doesn't like eating chicken, and hates those "slimy eggs,"  hasn't eaten one in over 50 years, but I'm the opposite.  Do you think I can convince him to let me raise a few? A few questions are:

1.  How many chickens do you have?

2.  If you live in northern states, do you insulate your coop to keep your chickens warm?

3.  How many eggs per week do you get?

4.  How hard is it to take care of them?

5.  Did you buy any books on raising chickens and if so, which one?

I have so many more questions and have spent a lot of time reading up on housing, etc., but still have questions.

Thanks so much for your input.

I have chickens, have for 25 years. Right now I have 15 hens, no roosters. I get approximately 12-15 eggs a day, which no, I cannot eat by myself, but I do pass them off to neighbors and a few of the shut-in elderly people who can't get out to the store. Two chickens, mid-size to heavies will net you about 4 eggs a day approximately. Depends on how much room you give them to roam and what you feed them. Feel free to e mail me if you'd like and I will help you figure it all out. It's not hard at all. If you raise chicks it's a little more time consuming, but not difficult.

Of all the animals around here, they are the most entertaining and actually pay for themselves! Your BEST internet resource is www.backyardchickens.com

1. How many chickens do you have? Lost count--20 or so heavy breed hens, have 3 roosters as well because I love the cocks. :-D Seriously, the roosters protect the hens (I let mine free-range) and are a riot and all get along because I guess I'm lucky. All my roosters were free off CraigsList.

2. If you live in northern states, do you insulate your coop to keep your chickens warm? Coop is not insulated but there are lots of birds and I keep a low-wattage bulb on 24/7 to keep egg production up. They also have a water heater (invaluable!) to keep water from freezing. Worth it's weight in gold that piece of equipment, which runs about $50 with shipping.

3. How many eggs per week do you get? One egg per hen when days get longer. In winter it is cut by about 30%, even with the light on all the time. Beware--Eggs will freeze and "explode" like a frozen beer would, so you have to be diligent about finding them before it freezes.

4. How hard is it to take care of them? Easiest things on the planet. Provide free-choice water and food (I prefer laying pellets for less waste when chickens are large enough to eat them), safe and windproof/waterproof shelter, and watch the good times roll. :)

5. Did you buy any books on raising chickens and if so, which one? I actually just spoke to friends who had them. They were much more valuable to me than books. Storey's puts out a good series though on all farm animals.

You cn go nuts on super fancy equipment and coops or you can go totally low rent...either way you can very easily keep a few hens even in urban areas, as long as zoning allows.

The BEST thing about chickens is they are great at bug control. I let mine run everywhere and they LOVE the manure pile, looking for fly pupae, grubs, ticks, spiders, grashoppers...whatever moves!

Sad thing about free-ranging chickens is what I found just now...I found a pile of feathers and I'm missing my beautiful brahma hen. This is the downside of country living...chickens gotta be free, wild things gotta eat.

This is my personal inner struggle...I could keep them locked up in their house with attached pen, but then I see them run, play, try to fly, and to see their happiness and eat/sell their eggs that I know were made while they were allowed to live their little lives to the fullest, well that's the tradeoff I guess.

It's kind of like all of us. We can sit at home and be safe, or we can go out there and live life and face whatever comes our way, for better or worse.

I was wondering if the Storey book (no pun intended) were decent.

Our neighbor has about 8 hens and some roosters. I would ask her for info but she works all kinds of crazy hours; senior ICU R.N. at a large hospital 3o miles away. She lets them out of the pen once in a while and one day, they came over here. I was mesmerized and instead of working, just watched them. They made themelves at home on my porch and I was thrilled to watch them. She has black ones and RI Reds. A couple even flew into our trees and stayed for a while. I guess it was over an hour that I watched their shenanigans. They cleaned our yard of grasshoppers, too.

The neighbor was very upset when she found out they were over here. She thought I'd be upset. Hey, I didn't care.

Anyway, that's what got me going on wanting my own. I just have to convince DH....maybe I'll find some stray ones and bring them home like I used to do with cats and dogs. He can't turn me down then. LOL

My hubby won't let me just get new animals, but he has a big soft heart, so if one is not being fed or taken care of...Just got a new boxer in March and I think I am getting us a new horse later this week. (It also helps that he is in Africa and can't really stop me and has a limited amount of time to talk me out of it.) But he's very excited about the new dog and can't wait to meet her. He's a little concerned about how much it will cost us to bring the horse back around to being healthy. Just a thought, if your hubby is as sweet as mine, he won't want chickens to suffer. :)

1. How many chickens do you have?

We have 12 chickens which is our second batch of chickens, used to have 1 rooster but gave him to a friend as he was getting too aggressive.

2. If you live in northern states, do you insulate your coop to keep your chickens warm?

It gets pretty cold here but no we don't do anything but some pine chips on the floor of the dog pen we keep them in (8 x 12 feet). They sleep all mushed together and keep warm that way.

3. How many eggs per week do you get?

Too many, on average about 70 a week, give some away, sell some, do not make any money doing that. Costs us about $20-25 a month to feed them, cost of feed varies constantly.

4. How hard is it to take care of them?

Very easy to care for, food and water and that is it, some form of shelter is good. We have a roof on the dog pen, and also use an old kid play house for their nesting and egg laying. We also let them out every day for about 4 hours so they are not penned up 24/7. They return to the roost on their own when it gets dark, though you do have to train them to do that, takes a couple weeks to get them doing that, and until then you have to find them and carry them to the roost each night. We cannot leave them out or our dogs would kill them. Also have foxes, raccoons, etc. that would love to have them for dinner.

5. Did you buy any books on raising chickens and if so, which one?

Two books, one on coops which I have no idea where it is, the other is Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow. Very informative.

We have 4 different breeds this time, all layers, nice group that get along quite well. Our first group was all Rhode Island Reds and they had a definite pecking order among them and could be quite vicious to one another. Our group now is more mellow and they don't really pick on one another, so definitely recommend a variety of chickens and not just one kind.

I will gladly answer any other questions if you want to email me. :-)

Per Hayseed, yes a water heater is invaluable - sm -

[ In Reply To ..]
I bought one this year as I did not want to go out every day and switch the water in the morning due to freezing (we have 2 3-gallon water containers for them). So I got the base heater and a metal 3-gallon water container, about $75 in all, so glad I got that this year especially with the several feet of snow we got this year. We do have a light in the "house" where they lay but we never put it on this year but in theory they will lay more with the light and also it helps to heat the house too. But ours still laid pretty good this winter, slowed some to 6 a day from 10 or 11. Still have eggs out the ears though.

Post above said something about 2 chickens laying four eggs a day, as far as I know there is no chicken that lays 2 eggs a day, one a day is their limit as far as I know. They skip a day here and there too sometimes.

I would go with just a few to start 3-4 and you will have plenty of eggs for just you. They are not really messy, yes they poop in the yard (our dogs clean that up, yuck), but the only time we have any smell from the coop is when it rains heavily. It is on a slight slope and the water just runs on through gets all muddy and stinky but passes quickly.

LOL! Yes! The dogs do love to eat the poop! - Hayseed

Isn't that just the GROSSEST?! And then they wanna give kisses! :D

I wanted to tell the original poster that you should most definitely TRY it. Even if you find you absolutely hate having chickens, they are so incredibly easy to get rid of...worst comes to worse offer them for free and someone will take them off your hands...just don't ask where they may end up (i.e. stew pot) ;-)

I have an "honor system" egg cooler at the top of my driveway. Sign says $1/dozen, free if you can't afford them, but bring/leave your own container. (Again, I'm wicked rural out here). In the cooler (with ice) I have some boxed up for folks in a rush and some in an egg basket for people to pick and choose (I have some blue eggs that some folks love, some folks are afraid of so this surprisingly has been a huge success). I often find that people pay more than the $1--why, I have no idea, but they do and I put that money in an envelope for the chicken feed and at $11/bag, one bag a week, the eggs more than pay for the birds.

Since I work from home (and this is both a blessing and a curse!), my office faces the road and folks can see if I"m in here or not and they wave, pull in, and ask if their kids can go into coop to find fresh eggs, so that's kinda neat. I mean, so long as I'm ready for it. I have been known to hide if I have bed head or no makeup because, well, I'm certifiable like that.

:D
Your post made me laugh... - Kendra

My favorite place to buy produce is this house I drive by and they have it out on a table, or in the bed of a truck with the sign with the prices and a coffee can for the cash (I will admit that I have never left more than they ask for). I would buy eggs this way, as well, as I HATE chickens and will never own any that don't come ready to cook! Personally, I think that they might be one of the two only animals more stupid than sheep, the stupidest of all being the turkey. I am glad that some people like them, so that I can get meat and eggs, but certainly not for me.

Chickens - wrkn4pnuts

I am a novice at raising chickens, because I just started doing this about four months ago, but will share my experience so far. We live on 23 acres and have raised goats for three years, so I thought, we have goats, why not chickens? Even so, it took some smooth talking to convince my husband about chickens, as he was opposed to it - but I did get my way :). I have eight chickens. Initially my reasons for them were for eggs (can't stand eggs from the grocery store) as well as to raise them as meat birds, but my 15yo daughter has sworn me to no chicken killing (even though she eats chicken). I also raise my own vegetables and chicken poop is excellent fertilizer. We thought all of our birds were hens but one has turned out to be a rooster, so we will have even more chickens at some point. We live in the Midwest and at present it is warm here, so no need for insulation in the coop now, but once it starts getting colder I will need to either build a coop more suitable for winter, or insulate the one I have already. Because of the shortened daylight hours in the winter, chickens also need an additional source of light in the coop to help maintain their egg production. I don't expect to get any eggs until August or September, as my birds are still young, but to my recollection, the Storey's guide said at 30 weeks to expect eggs. So far I haven't had any problems taking care of them, pretty much like any other animal, plenty of food and water and fresh air, keep their living areas clean, check them regularly to spot any health issues. I have one book, Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens, which seems very thorough and has been really helpful, and you can find them and other how-to books at your local Tractor Supply. I would also like to recommend a magazine called Countryside, also available at Tractor Supply (you can also subscribe), which instead of publishing articles written by reporters, it publishes articles written by its readers. It has many, many helpful articles as far as living a rural/simpler lifestyle. I hope you convince your hubby. I really enjoy raising my birds. Good luck to you!

I already receive Countryside. DH has been subscribing for about 4 years now. - Backwards Typist

[ In Reply To ..]
We also subscribe to Backwoods Hom. These two mags are one reason why I want to do this. I will be semi-retired soon and I know I will have some time as long as I stay off the computer. LOL

I don't think I could kill a chicken. I still have the memory when I was young of going with a friend to her uncle's farm and he did it just to make us squirm. DH's aunt also did it when we visited once. I didn't eat supper that night.

I'm just looking to maybe making a few extra $$ sooner or later. I don't know about a rooster. I had one chase me once (also when young). Our neighbor has about 4 of them and wants us to "take them" but DH says why since he doesn't like chickens.

I don't know about the rest of you chicken huggers, but wouldn't it be a more wonderful world if we could all just get along? Stop fighting amongst each other, stop pecking away at each other? I mean, call me an eternal optimist, but wouldn't it be great to live in a world where a chicken could cross the road without being questioned about their motive???

HAHAHAHA!!!! (sorry folks, just had a momentary spasm of insanity. I'm done)

Now convincing the chicken hater is probably going to take at least until next year. I've already been working on him off and on for a year already. Of course, I did convince him to plant potatoes again this year when he was totally against it, so maybe there's hope. LOL

I wouldn't be able to free range my chickens as we live too close to the road and we have fox, raccoon, hawks, coyotes, and mountain lions (although our state says we don't, but we've seen one), plus our lab and the other neighbor's 2 labs that break loose every day.

I have been thinking of a chicken tractor since it takes DH half a day to mow the grass (another thing he hates)and, yes, that was another way of trying to convince him. LOL It would have to be light enough for me to handle by myself, though. I definitely know I would not be getting any help from him.

Our neighbor's chickens laid a whole bunch of eggs behind our garage one year but we didn't want to use them because we didn't know how old they were. We knew nothing about chickens then.

I will probably spend a few more months reading up on raising them and then prepare for them.

We do have a dog house that DH built a year before our lab/retriever died. I was thinking about using it, adding a nesting box in the back of it and cutting a window in the side, but really don't know if it's high enough (about 4 ft high in the front) with a slanted front-to-back roof.

I appreciate all your help. I really wasn't sure how many eggs, etc. I could count on once they were ready to lay. I will be ordering or going to Tractor Supply for Storey's book.

I wouldn't hesitate to use that dog house at all! - Hayseed

[ In Reply To ..]
Being a yankee, making due with what we have is in our blood! You don't even need fancy-schmancy nesting boxes. I've seen people use plastic milk crates or even small rubbermaid boxes/dish pans from the dollar store. Heck, some of my hens lay eggs anywhere they darned well please, even though I have nesting boxes. Right now, two favorite spots are IN A PLASTIC DOG HOUSE and on top of an open bag of shavings.

I also had no help with my chicken project, so I know where you're coming from. I can't build for squatola and had to improvise a lot of stuff. Feel free to visit my personal little website (I don't sell anything, it's just a photo/documentary place in cyberspace) at www.perin.org and click on the chickens.

I haven't updated it since winter because I've been so busy with other stuff, but it'll give you an idea of how I handle stuff through all the seasons--winter being the hardest.

NOW is the time of year to give it a go! No worries of frostbite or pneumonia from cold wet days/nights. Carpe chicken! Seize the chicken!
:-D

though they rarely use them, find eggs in there sometimes. They mainly just lay on the ground though in front of the next box. I thought about buying one of those sets of 4 nice ones but $100 seems a bit much when I had 4 milk crates I got for free. The a few sometimes sleep on top of the play house, but generally they roost/sleep on a old fish tank stand we had made of fancy 2 x 4s from the looks of it. I have it anchored to the chain link of the pen and instant perch for the birds. We also have a 1 x 1 board that goes across the entire pen, through the chain link on both sides to hold it, that they perch on. Any money I have spent has been on the feed holder, heat lamp/reflector for when they are chicks and the several watering containers we have for them, probably $200 in all.

A couple fun things when I had chickens - Sadie

[ In Reply To ..]
When my kids were little we had 3 pet chickens. Two hens and a rooster. We got them when they were small, and I was surprised and delighted to discover that roosters actually have to learn to crow! At first I started hearing this weird noise in the morning (like someone with a bad case of pharyngitis ... each morning it got better until one day he had it down. :) I loved hearing him crow every morning.

Another funny thing was that I used to throw leftovers out the door and into the yard for them to eat (I don't recall if I read up to see if ok, but they would eat anything) ... anyway, one hen got so she would come up and peck at the door at various wanting goodies. They really are quite smart.

The rooster would also stand up tall, spread his wings, and crow anytime I fussed over him and told him how handsome he was (in my high-pitched animal schmoozing voice).

I think you will enjoy them. : )
