Congress looking into White House’s role in FCC’s net neutrality regulations.

Posted: Feb 9, 2015

The secrecy surrounding the Obama administration's plans for regulating the Internet has prompted a congressional inquiry into whether the independent Federal Communications Commission or the White House and its allies are calling the shots over the future of the nation's broadband networks.

A top adviser to Tom Wheeler, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), defended Wheeler's decision to hide his latest draft of Internet regulations from the public until after the agency voted on them at the end of the month during a public question and answer session on Twitter held on Friday, Feb. 6.

Gigi Sohn, Wheeler's special counsel for external affairs, pointed to over 4 million public comments submitted to the agency as proof of the public's support, despite the diversity of the content of those comments.

"Our proposal is based on that record," Sohn said via Twitter, claiming that the public had been provided ample input over the past year.

However, the head of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform signaled to Wheeler on Friday that the committee planned to launch an investigation into the agency, pointing to a White House effort to influence the FCC to craft rules that favored a coalition of pro-net neutrality startups.

The committee's chairman, Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah,  requested in a letter to Wheeler that the FCC preserve all of its internal net neutrality-related documents produced since a federal court struck down its previous net neutrality rules on Jan. 14, 2014.

The FCC has until Feb. 20 to provide the committee with all net neutrality-related communications and calendar appointments between FCC employees, the White House, and other executive branch agencies since Jan. 14, 2014.

and throwing it in with telecom companies. And for the most part FCC doesn't regulate it. They were't sure what to do with it. It needs to be changed and protected. It's information and education. It should be free. Like TV was free with the old broadcast system.

If Congress is interested in it be afraid, be very afraid. They have tried and tried to hack it up, mainly, I think to limit users access to information - because it is the best source of information we have. TV news is a joke.

I think they'd carve it up like cable or dish if they could - they do it now with the different high speeds with DSL and now fiber optics. Fiber optics will kill the competition in DSL. If AT&T abandons their copper lines, I don't know if they would have to make them available for the competition anymore. That would leave them and cable. I can buy DSL much cheaper from a local reselling AT&T DSL than from AT&T. I just have to get my AT&T phone back, first, which I will do. After 20 years or so, I couldn't afford it on MT $ anymore.

A basic plan would get you local websites.. oh goodie. A more expensive would get you a few bigger names, more popular sites or maybe statewide. The primo package gets you the whole enchilada but they could still block some sites from you if they wanted to. I don't know all the sites available to me on a subject until I do a Google search.

Same thing for hosting. well for this hosting package for your site, this many people will find you in a search. For more $ we expand you to a region-wide search, more $ the whole country, for even more the www comes back. With, of course, the ability to not let some people have access to these sites. Say some online movie yadda yadda competed with another for New York City. One switch and that company doesn't have access to that market. Their competitors get all the customers and billions of dollars just changed direction. Let the corporate killings begin, of course that is bad for consumers in the end. No competition, you can charge what you want.

Controlling the internet is controlling information. And we work through the internet. What if you couldn't get through certain routers to get to certain sites like for VPNs or Typing platforms hosted with a static IP address or even FTP, now a lot in the cloud so how would/could they divide that up? The cloud is really a server on the ground located somewhere with a static IP address.

I don't trust the big ISPs. They are motivated by money, that money buys lobbyists who go and influence the politicians or is given to the politicians outright in campaign funds. Either way, it doesn't bode well for the internet as we know and use it.

Fast & Furious:  This was what we heard repeatedly in the administration's response to the Congressional investigation...that the investigation should be - and was being - investigated by the Inspector General, and that Congress should butt out.   Let the IG investigate - that's what they said. Except they had no intention of cooperating with the IG's investigation either.  I guess they forgot to mention that. And so, when the IG starts to get closer to t ...

I saw some comments on the board recently about the strangulation of business through regulation.  It's a subject I've always been fascinated by because of its vast complexity, politicization and above all a complete lack of named regulations.  It's so rare that any politician right or left ever names an individual regulation they don't like.  They are always referred to in bulk: "Those darn regulations are killing American jobs."  Certainly some are point ...
