Not Romney but OBAMA proposes cuts to FEMA!!

Posted: Oct 30, 2012

See pages 94-96 of Obama's sequestration budget plan.

Yes, Romney believes that FEMA has been over-funded for the results that we've actually gotten from the agency (which are perfectly miserable) - but the difference is, Romney plans to redistribute the money to the states and it isn't therefore a cut to emergency funding.

Under Obama's plan, the money would be used to fund OBAMACARE.

Got knowledge?

I'm probably the only one on the forum with professional FEMA credentials - or disaster operations experience. sm

The best grade that anyone can give FEMA in terms of disaster outcomes is a C, and the misuse of funds within the agency, to say nothing of the highly questionable - even laughable - funds that have been handed out like candy are pretty well known.

There isn't an agency within the Federal government that isn't operating on a bloated budget.

Let's examine this statement: "X plans to cut funding for FEMA (or other agency)."

The immediate conclusion you are asked to leap to is that this means that the agency in question will naturally be less capable of performing its mission, right?

We've been raised to think that when it comes to government, more money = better performance. Education? Throw more money at it. Health? Throw more money at it. Emergency services? Throw more money at it. Military? Throw more money at it.

We need to resist this kind of thinking. Less money does NOT necessarily translate to a lower level of efficiency. In fact, it seems to work quite the other way around. The MORE money we throw at these agencies, the LESS incentive they seem to have to deliver services efficiently and effectively.

You people who love government services...you might just want to EMBRACE budget cuts instead of automatically buying into the "more-money-better-services" assumption, which has precious little proof to back it up.

I agree in theory, if not necessarily practice - Fanatical Hypocrite

One of the most daunting tasks we have as a nation is to trim the fat, end the pork and cut out corruption. I think it's a fairly bipartisan sentiment that the government is poorly managed. I've never met anyone who didn't think the feds, states, counties and cities couldn't be run better.

My problem with cutting the budget isn't the removal of corruption, it's the near complete lack of selective targeting. Sure, Obama or Romney could cut the FEMA budget to cut down corruption, but will it? Or will the corruption continue to sap the same amount and less money gets to the final destination.

The basic metaphor I see is that if you were trying to balance your personal budget. Let's say your spending is out of control and you're getting into deeper and deeper debt. The biggest part of this is that you're hooked on crack and it's costing a thousand a month. So you resolve to spend less. You put yourself on a budget. You only get a thousand discretionary spending dollars outside bills. But because you're an addict, you cut out food because the crack is too important. See, your overall budget might be balanced, but now you're a starving crack addict.

If someone in FEMA is corrupt, oust them. If they spend money on useless equipment, stop doing that. If they don't respond fast enough, find out why and remove the obstacles. Too many people hiring friends or family? Put tough credential requirements in place and discount personal references within the organization.

If the feds run FEMA just as well on half its current budget, then cut only the dead weight and keep what works. The same goes for corporations. When was the last time a corporation made less money and the execs decided to cut their pay checks before making cut backs to the rest of the company?

You make very good points, but I would love to see all government agency cost reduction presented in terms of reducing the actual corruption instead of a policy of starving them out. Both parties do it too. Everyone loves the idea of getting rid of corruption, but it never gets done.

Look back at our "greatest" eras and it was the same. - People=stupidity, corruption, AND achievement. nm

Congress has 4 months to come up with a compromise as they previously agreed to do. Got research?

No I do not. Nice try, but absolutely no cigar - and-or kewpie doll for you.

Dear Lord, the ingenuity of deflections and misinterpretations never ceases to amaze me.

Great! FEMA functions fine and the funds are used to care for the sick. - Is there a complaint here? nm

Romney Thinks FEMA Should Be Disbanded, Gov. Christie No Longer Agrees. SmOct 30, 2012
I'm glad FEMA is here in the Northeast. We have a lot of damage here and a lot of people without power.  Funny how Gov. Christie changed his opinion about FEMA being disbanded after New Jersey got hit with Hurricaine Sandy/Superstorm.  Well, not really funny.  He apparently saw the light. So, if you live in New England or the Eastern seaboard are you still voting for Romney?  You think your state can handle a major disaster by itself?  Think again. ...

Good for you to rise above it all and do the right thing, President Obama - because I daresay you'd get the same kind of help from Texas, if the situation were reversed ;) And yet Texans just keep kicking Obama and the Feds in the teeth every chance they get, as evidenced by both the type of Texans mentioned in the post below mine, as well as  some of the comments underneath it - talk about ungrateful "takers." 48 to 43 is pretty close. In a poll registered voters were asked if election was held today who would you vote for. 48 Romney and 43 for Obama.
