Free Cell Phones - Backwards typist

Just checked it out. It would be good for my son who has been unemployed for 2 years now and can't even afford to get his tags and car inspected to go to another county for work.
Yes, and this is what OP missed - the original me

They *are not* free cell phones per se, as in for pleasure.
They are a smart, simple tool to help move UNemployed people back to the employed collumn.
DUH.
Well, golly. My husband just lost his job. Maybe he should - go get his free phone... please.nm

Yes, if he needs one he should... - The original me
[ In Reply To ..]
Because THAT might help him get a job sooner and THAT means he will once again be contributing to the system THAT JUST HELPED HIM.
What part of that can't you get?
Without a phone, he can't get interviews - Backwards typist
[ In Reply To ..]
Why do you think he would be using it for pleasure?
Should he use carrier pigeon to get interviews? He doesn't have a phone. He can't be contacted except by mail. Who is going to employ him if he doesn't have a phone?
If he gives my phone number as point of contact, I have to drive 10 miles to let him know. I doubt that would impress any interviewer, do you?

Why do you say that? I mean, what proof? "Less fortunate" - is such a vague term, which also gets "abused".nm

Less fortunate............ - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
It certainly is a vague term and in many cases, is just used for 'anyone' who just doesn't give a darn or want to do anything in life.....just let everyone else do it for them, including feeding, clothing, healthcare, you name it.
In my town, ANY child graduating from a high school in this entire county gets TWO FREE YEARS of community college, where they can get a degree that could take them a long way and get a respectable job..... I won't bother to tell you how many DON'T take advantage of that.... they're just too busy standing on the street corner, knocking up another girl, selling dope, the girls are too busy having babies by several different dads..... just TOO busy to get that free education offered to them.
So, I'm quite skeptical when I hear the phrase "less unfortunate". There are definitely those out there and we usually know them when we see them.
Being too lazy or being raised to feel somebody owes you something and then you take on that mentality is NOT less fortunate, except for those who are having to pay for their way in life; those are the unfortunate people. And now it's going to be worse.
Skeptical of 'less fortunate' or cynical? - the original me
[ In Reply To ..]
It's not a vague term and not hard to understand: Less fortunate means just that - and no one ever suggested it was an excuse for those who "squandered" opportunities.
It's easy to distance oneself from those out there truly hurting by lumping them in with the relatively small group of people who are lazy and manipulative.
When you distance yourself like that you hve a good excuse for doing nothing to help the less fortunate, even if that help is JUST to empathize instead of sit in judgement.
So right. I think most of us WANT to help those in need, but - NOT those who simply expect a handout.nm

If you go to the provided link it clearly states this program is NOT subsidized by the U.S. Government. It would be nice if people stuck to the facts. There is plenty in our government to be concerned about without getting ridiculous.

Big Oil WelfareMay 18, 2011The Senate blocked a bill Tuesday that would repeal about $2 billion a year in tax breaks for the five biggest oil companies.
First of all, this bill should have been initiated in the Republican-controlled House as it is a "money bill." Second, I do not fault the three Democrat senators who voted against this bill. A senator's job is to represent the people of his state, and that is what they are doing. However, I do fault MOST of the Republicans for voting ag ...
No More Corporate Welfare!Apr 08, 2011I know it's not realistic to think that we could ever get to the point where people would pay the taxes they are supposed to pay, but that would solve our budget problems and nobody would go hungry. The middle class would have more money to spend and we would buy things from the big companies who make them. We would all save money because we would be driving on better roads, not tearing our cars apart, children will be getting a better education and not have to move in with their parents wh ...

Collecting WelfareFeb 18, 2013Prominent Muslim Cleric: Collect Gov’t Welfare as a ‘Jihad Seeker’s Allowance’
A prominent Muslim cleric in the United Kingdom reportedly urged a group of fellow Muslims to collect government benefits as a “jihad seeker’s allowance,” saying non-Muslims who work 9-5 jobs will end up “committing suicide” at the end of their lives when they realize it wasn’t worth anything.

Update On Welfare FraudOct 12, 2011Well, after a lot of thought and discussion, we turned our information over to the appropriate authority. It came down to family. Our family. What we can live with knowing and what we can't. What kind of an example we want to set for our children. While we have no plans to disclose this to our children now, maybe some day when they're older, we will use it to teach them a lesson about actions and consequences. It also made us realize that maybe ...
Report Mom For Welfare Fraud?Oct 10, 2011My husband's mother has received welfare on and off throughout her life. She has always found a way to milk the system or somone. About a year ago, she found out she was the heir to some mineral rights, which yields her about $7000 a month. When she first started receiving this inheritance, she cashed her checks and deposited them into her account. At that time, she was living in a low-income apartment, receiving medicaid, food stamps, fuel assistance, free cell ...
Michele Bachmann: Welfare QueenDec 23, 2009Michele Bachmann: Welfare Queen
Posted on Dec 22, 2009
By Yasha Levine
Michele Bachmann has become well known for her anti-government tea-bagger antics, protesting health care reform and every other government “handout” as socialism. What her followers probably don’t know is that Rep. Bachmann is, to use that anti-government slur, something of a welfare queen. That’s right, the anti-government insurrectionist has taken more than a quarter-million dollars in g ...

New KS Welfare Law Restricts Recipients To $25/day AccessJun 11, 2015
Kansas welfare recipients will be unable to get more than $25 per day in benefits under a new law sent this week to Republican Gov. Sam Brownback's desk by the state legislature.
The bill also prohibits welfare recipients from spending their benefits at certain types of businesses, including liquor stores, fortune tellers, swimming pools and cruise ships.

Americans For Prosperity Is A Social Welfare NonprofitMay 13, 2013I posted a link that was written back in Aug 2012, but it provides a lot of context to the current IRS targeting story.
I'm not by any means defending the IRS. Targeting based on any predjudice is unacceptable (i.e., churches during Bush Adm that were audited for sermons that were interpreted as anit-war). I was warned when I itemized one year that claiming a home office was an IRS red flag and to be absolutely within the defiition of a home office because they have progr ...
Hardworking Americans Are Subsidizing Welfare--Where Does The Money Go?Nov 07, 2013Wondering just how many of your tax dollars are subsidizing welfare? Americans' welfare money giveaway travels in more than one direction--and disproportionately so. When thinking about the term "welfare," Americans generally don't realize that the bulk of taxpayers' dollars going to welfare are actually going to subsidize big business. This "corporate welfare" costs Americans far more than they might realize. Just something to think about.

According to the indictment unsealed earlier this week, state Rep. Cecilia Velasquez was charged with three felony counts: unlawful use of food stamps, fraudulent schemes and practices, and theft.
The Arizona Department of Economic Security began investigating Velasquez in 2014. According to the Arizona DES, Velasquez fraud ...
