I posted a link that was written back in Aug 2012, but it provides a lot of context to the current IRS targeting story.
I'm not by any means defending the IRS. Targeting based on any predjudice is unacceptable (i.e., churches during Bush Adm that were audited for sermons that were interpreted as anit-war). I was warned when I itemized one year that claiming a home office was an IRS red flag and to be absolutely within the defiition of a home office because they have programs to "look" for people claiming something that was not so.
I'm going to reserve judgement (IG report regarding this due out tomorrow or next day), but if IRS was flooded with 501(c)4 nonprofit applications at the inception of super PACs being able to claim nonprofit under the guise of Social Welfare Nonprofit (which I find ironic for a Republican PAC to claim), it would make sense that as a shortcut, Tea Party, Patriot, etc., put in a search (or on a target) might be taken to save time. OR it could be a political thing. And before you jump, I am aware that Democrats also have superPACS, but far fewer than Republicans, and I am aware that they also are able to operate under the guise of being Social Welfare Nonprofits.
Of course, whether politically motivated, inappropriate short-cut-taking, or just laziness, something wrong was done.
But regrding the new thing I learned today, my own opinion is that neither party should be able to claim to be a charity, accept millions of dollars from anonymous donors, and use that money for a political agenda. This was something I had no clue about until today.
Anyhow, there's a lot more in the link.
