report mom for welfare fraud?

Posted: Oct 10, 2011

My husband's mother has received welfare on and off throughout her life.  She has always found a way to milk the system or somone.  About a year ago, she found out she was the heir to some mineral rights, which yields her about $7000 a month.  When she first started receiving this inheritance, she cashed her checks and deposited them into her account.  At that time, she was living in a low-income apartment, receiving medicaid, food stamps, fuel assistance, free cell phone -- the whole deal except for cash assistance because she's on social security.

She collected her inheritance for several months before worrying about losing all of her assistance, so she asked her children if they would put the money in a bank account in their name to *hide* it.  One of them volunteered to do that and then she signed her inheritance rights over to him, so that the checks are no longer coming in her name.  He takes her money out of his account anytime she needs it.  She recently bought a car and had some other things done for herself (electrolysis).

Lately, she has been calling my husband asking for advice on ways to avoid getting in trouble for this fraud.  Last week, she called and said she received a notice from the housing authority that she has to meet with them to disclose her finances.  I believe they do this on a routine basis, but she claims a DIL reported her.  She has 12 children.

My husband is sick of the phone calls and sick of the fraud.  We both work hard for our money and can't stand the fact that she's using taxpayer money like this.  We have talked about reporting her anonymously for welfare fraud, not because we want to see her do time (which they usually don't), but just to make the fraud stop.  We are talking about a large amount of money over a long period of time -- $7K per month for 15+ years, according to the company buying the minerals.

So, what would you do?  Would you report your own mother?

Shame on you and your mother - me

You are both old enough to know right from wrong - your not speaking up, even if it was to tell your mother of same, makes it a double whammy. Welfare is not supposed to be a way of life and if you are not entitled to it, it's even worse. I would be ashamed of my mother if she did something like that, and you should be ashamed of yourself for condoning it and basically being an accomplice.

whoa -- back it up - rambler

[ In Reply To ..]
We did not help her do anything. When she initially received the money, no mention was made of putting the money in someone else's name. We thought it was great that she would finally be able to take care of herself. It wasn't until a month or so ago that we found out that she had put it in another child's name to avoid losing her benefits. She tried to keep it from us because she knew my husband would not like it.

Then this past week, she called and said she had to disclose her finances to the housing authority. Again, my husband told her *I told you so*. My husband had advised against it before knowing that she had done it and now that she told him what she did, we are trying to decide what to do.

What's worse -- reporting your mother for welfare fraud or letting her get away with welfare fraud?

I totally would - Ms. Grinch

I'm probably a bad one to comment but if anyone I knew - yes, even my own mother - were milking the system and committing fraud I would turn them in. My sister is a manager of a store and her employees tell her they "can't work so many hours" because they will lose benefits, this time of year it is so they can get Christmas presents from whatever charity is giving them away. If they actually worked the hours, they could buy whatever they wanted the kids to have but no, they want whatever someone else will GIVE them and not actually do their job. If it were me, I would call the charities and turn them in but so far she just complains to me.

when you choose the behavior - makes sense

[ In Reply To ..]
you choose the consequence. It's your mother's behavior and your mother's consequences. You didn't do the money laundering or milk any system, so there is nothing for you to feel ashamed about (despite what another poster tried to have happen).

The new dilema for you and spouse is to decide what to be done about your knowledge. I think talking to a lawyer would be the best thing for you to do to get advice. You do want to cover yourself in case someone's finger starts to point your way, just in case.

If the worst that happens is that the abuse stops and the mom stops speaking to you, well, take comfort in the knowledge that she can always live like a queen in that money or pay someone to take care of her if necessary.
thank you - rambler

We really tried to stay out of it. Even when she wanted us to go along to the initial meetings, we declined. When she got her first check and wanted to buy us something, we declined.

We're not perfect. We could have used a few trees in our yard or some help with the driveway, but we didn't feel right about taking the money. Now I'm really glad we didn't.

I wish we didn't know, but we do. My husband can't sleep either way and it's really a heart-wrenching decision to make. While she's not the most active person in our lives or our children's, I don't want her to cut off contact with our children completely. They have no idea any of this is going on and know nothing about the money or the situation. It would really upset them if she chose to take it out on them and not wish them a happy birthday or come to any of their activities.

Thank you for your kind words.
I turned in my SIL and my niece - And I would do it again

They have been collecting welfare for years claiming they are crazy but they just don't want to work. Maybe they are crazy, but they just want the money. The money they get doesn't go to rent or food but to illegal drugs and spending it at the casino. Then they turn around and ask family members for money for rent and food, which some of them give them bc they feel sorry for them. It's not right. When my husband died four years ago, I could barely make the bills by myself. I had $30 left a week for groceries. When I applied for food stamps, they told me I made too much. I made less than $20,000 a year. I didn't have credit card debt but just had mortgage, car, and utilities to pay, yet I was turned down by the system when I so greatly needed them. I am sickened of people who get away with this, and if people reported them more often, maybe the people who really could have used help, like myself, could get the help they need. We can keep watching people take advantage and not get involved, or we can do the right thing to help those in need who truly deserve it. I chose to do the right thing, and I don't care what anyone thinks. They are nothing but common thieves as far as I am concerned.

You betcha I would! Such fraud is a CRIME and is also part (not all) of the reason our country is so mucked up.

Report her - Happy MT Robin

I know it's a horrible position to be in, but there is someone out there who really, desperately needs the assistance and can't get it because there are too many people on the welfare roles like your MIL. You have to report her. Now that you know the truth of what she is doing (and I can't believe one of her other children is aiding and abetting her) I don't think you'll be able to live with yourself if you don't.

MISPRISON OF FELONY - old hand

I sent you a private e-mail about this. For each and every one of you, you must be careful about what you publish on the internet.

First, why would a person WANT to turn their own MIL or mother - SM

[ In Reply To ..]
in? She's your husband's mother, your children's grandmother. Whatever character flaws she may have, she is still an elderly woman living alone. It's none of your business what your MIL has done. She will undoubtedly face consequences for what she's done. It's between her, God, and the government. You didn't condone her doing it, you didn't help her do it, and you've given the best advice available which was to stop. Leave it at that.

Having said all that above, I find it very difficult to feel bad that she has been defrauding the government. What is the government doing for any of us lately? By the time I retire, there may not even be social security and I've been paying into that system for 30 years and now! Most of us are living pay check to pay check just barely while government spending is at an all time high. I'm supposed to feel bad because someone out there has the guts and has found a way to milk a little justice out of the system?

Let your MIL be. No one is asking you to do anything.

I have to politely disagree. If I knew my mother, - wannie

[ In Reply To ..]
MIL, FIL, father, whatever, was involved in committing a crime, I would have to turn them in. A crime is a crime, no matter what it is. That's what's wrong with things now, everybody wants to turn a deaf ear or a blind eye to what's going on.
What's wrong with things now is there is no loyalty, no sense of family. - SM
[ In Reply To ..]
Rather than do what we can to help our family or friends or neighbors, we turn our backs and narc them out.

I'm not saying what the OP's MIL is doing is okay. It's dishonest and yes it is a crime, so tell her that. Tell her you won't help her if she gets into trouble for what she is doing. You can morally object to what she is doing without being the hangman!

When a child is being neglected or abused in anway, when someone is suffering at the hands of an abuser, if I witness a murder, rape or any violent crime that poses a real physical threat and danger to society as a whole, I feel compelled to go to the authorities.

My neighbor is getting food stamps when he or she shouldn't be, doesn't pose any kind of danger to me or my family. Is it wrong? YES! Does it irritate me? YES! Is it my business? NO!

Live your life morally. Reach out a helping hand when you can. Try to be kind to everyone. And pity those who choose to live a dishonest or amoral life. Pray for those who chose to live a dishonest or amoral life.

I'm not called to be a spotlight. I'm called to be a beacon.

We'll just to have agree to disagree. We each would handle - wannie

the situation in a different way and that's fine. You have to live by your convictions and I have to live by mine (and that's how it should be). Have a blessed day!
I am all for praying for those who live a dishonest life, - but I am also for holding their feet to the fire.
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know if you pay federal income taxes that support welfare, but I do, and it darn right IS my business if someone is committing fraud and abusing them. I can only hope that everyone who knows of someone stealing our (collective tax payers) money would turn them in. Sadly, this is not true.
It's not my (or your) place to hold anyone's feet to the fire and quite frankly - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
it's not a responsibility I would want. Yes, I do pay taxes and I know that tax payers pay for the welfare that so many are fraudulently receiving. I worry about me and mine. That's my reponsibility.

wish I had free money - dirt poor working 12 hour days
[ In Reply To ..]
I look out my window here and watch my neighbors all gathering down in the courtyard getting ready for yet another BBQ that they plan all morning because out of the 16 apartments on of these two buildings that face each other, there are only THREE of us who actually work. The rest of them gather government assistance or some kind of disability check.

I don't have medical insurance because I can't afford that plus 900.00 rent on top of my other minimal monthly expenses. I don't even have television.

Meanwhile, King Hillbilly across the way and his wife sit around all day, hacking and coughing like crazy, chain smoking, drinking beer, and playing around with lawn darts and other stuff. Can't work tho for some reason. No way man! Why should they? Free money every month right?

Directly downstairs from me lives a man with his girlfriend of 8 years. They have 3 kids together, a 7 yo, 2 yo and an 11 month old. HE, however, has SEVEN other children, scattered about the state. He is pretty darn proud that he has managed to procreate so many times and then brags about how he doesn't have to take care of them because the state does. Excuse me? You mean I do and everyone else who actually has a job.

Lets not forget the food stamps they collect. Remember they aren't married. Heard her talking one day not too long ago that 1000.00 a month on her EBT card just doesn't go very far. Really? Hmmmm, I guess maybe you should GET A JOB, STOP HAVING BABIES, and STOP having these BBQs Every stinking day where YOU feed all of the other lazy free money collecting people here. Also plenty of beer to go around every single night out there. All of these people have medical aid, housing assistance, food stamps, etc. None of them do anything for it. Kerry (King Hillbilly's wife) says she has never worked a day in her life and doesn't intend to. Thanks for that Kerry.

I'm not the original poster but I darn sure get pretty peeved when I see free-loader after free-loader doing absolutely nothing and expecting to be taken care of when the rest of us actually work for what little we have.

Dont even get me started on the drug dealer across the hall and his band of welfare children.

Welfare was meant for a temporary source of aid, NOT a replacement for a JOB!

Whose place is it? - Should everyone just look
[ In Reply To ..]
the other way because it's more polite? Why is it not my place to hold her feet to the fire? It's my money she's stealing--yes, stealing. It is my place, your place and everyone else's place to hold her feet to the fire, but even if we are to abide by the me and mine mentality that you subscribe to, the OP would only be holding "hers" responsible, right? And, according to you, that is what she should do. At least in this particular post....

Aiding and Abetting - is why they would WANT to turn in the MIL

[ In Reply To ..]
Let the MIL be? MIL is committing fraud and she's using YOUR tax dollars to do it.

If the OP doesn't turn MIL in, she is an accomplice after the fact and quite possibly could also be charged as an accessory because she knew about the fraud and did nothing about it.

You find it difficult to feel bad that she's defrauding the government? Just bcause the government hasn't done much for you lately? Fraud is fraud and what she's doing is ILLEGAL. You can't have gray areas on this.

Sad. Just sad.
Oh for crying out loud! Aiding and abetting, REALLY?!?! - SM
[ In Reply To ..]
Aiding and abetting because a son knew his mother was receiving welfare when she was not eligible and didn't turn her in. He didn't encourage her, advise her on how to hide her money or "launder" it. He simply chose not to turn his own mother in and that makes him an accomplice after the fact. That would not hold up any court across this country and furthermore I think the government would not waste their time pressing that.

You're right I don't feel bad that she is defrauding the government. I also don't feel good about it. I just don't care what she does. It's none of my business.

If she were my mother or MIL, I wouldn't turn her in because I love my family more than I care about her defrauding the government.

You are one cold fish.
Your tax dollars, so it should be your business - Appalled, simply appalled

at your "don't care" attitude. I loved my mother too, but if she were committing a crime, you bet your bottom dollar I'd do something about it.

I'm not a cold fish, I just happen to know right from wrong, thank you very much.

What this woman's MIL is doing is STEALING and she's stealing from you and me and everyone who pays taxes and works their butts off to do things legally.

I knew someone that turned a "blind eye" - sereneone

to an illegal activity his wife was doing. GUESS WHAT! He ended up doing hard time for AIDING AND ABETTING because he didn't turn her in.

So yes, there can be consequences to knowing about it and not telling even when you aren't participating in an illegal activity.

This is what I would do - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Some people may disagree with this but here goes. I would tell her not to show up for the meeting with the housing authority. Her failure to show up will most likely disqualify her from receiving further assistance. I just couldn't risk sending my own mother or MIL to jail. Also, she should make some kind of contribution to a shelter or other agency equal to the amount of food stamps, etc., she has received illegally to "pay back" the system. If she continues, then I would take other measures but this will end the handouts given to her and keep her uninvolved with the legal system.

I just found out 2 weeks ago that my 4 children's biological father, sperm donor, whatever you want to call him, whom i have been divorced from for 8 years and never saw a penny of child support (the infamous self-employed contractor) has been receiving food stamps, unemployment (and admits to being an employee but doesnt get steady work) for some time now. Because ive been pretty good at making a living with MT in the beginning of being single bread winner, i could never qualify for food stamps or any kind of assistance for that matter. And i come to find out now, making half the salary i used to, HE is getting MY money?? These are the things that make people crack. I have worked my bum off for my kids and they still have nothing! We eat mac and cheese, hot dogs, day after day, and here he is making more money than i do! I hav absolutely no tolerance for people like this, even ones who hav been close to you. MT is worse than ever but after 30 years and knowing nothing else at my age, i feel like i should be the one receiving unemployment for all the times i wasnt able to pay this bill or that, even though i made the choice to sit at my desk for 9 to 12 hours waiting for work! I hav seriously wondered about losing my grip because i cant hold on anymore with less and less work, and here he is living it up. I wonder what I did to make God hate me and my kids, and why he has been spared of any kind of sleepless nights i hav had. Im very proud of myself for raising my kids on my own but i am wearing out fighting, literally. If i hav to say no to one of my girls doing something as simple as wanting a school yearbook or not having one piece of wrapping paper on the floor on ANY holiday, im gonna lose it.

Those of us who work the hardest in life are always watching someone else who is ripping off the system and we just sit and stare, helpless. No wonder our economy is the way it is. GREED. A self sense of "i deserve it". Makes my heart ache every day. I would give a limb to be able to give my kids a nice childhood. One thing i do know, they know the value of a dollar, they know i do my best, and i will be contributing 4 wonderful, productive adults to this otherwise crazy world.

So yes, six pages later, turn her in!! 7 grand a month is a couple grand bring-home more than i did during my best years of MT. That 60 grand a year is now 30, exactly half. If you would like my help in any way, just someone to talk to and vent, im your girl and you can private email me. I think i may have to do something legally to. Do i want everything taken away from him? YES, because he has taken everything from us for years!

I am truly saddened by some of the thoughtless comments made to Rambler above. Do you really think she would bother coming here to ask opinions if she was heartless? And for those of you who offered their honest opinions, you are all people i feel have good hearts.

I read a post today here on the main board titled "fellow transcriptionists". I was feeling horrible with tons of stress going on with my own employment worries, and when i read this, it made me feel so much better in my heart. This person whom i dont even know gave me a sense of hope that i desperately needed, and it also made me aware that my own mantra for years and years that i have repeated over and over in hard times is EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON, and i really dont remember saying that to myself for a long time! Somebody paid it forward for that poster and i believe this will happen to all good people who live life as honestly as they can, give a helping hand when needed, never judge someone if they have'nt been in their shoes, and just SOME, it will come back to you.

Read the post. It might make you feel good before going to bed tonight. I know it did for me.

Good nite everyone! Sleep tight and let your worries go for a few hours.

I turned in my own brother and his wife for welfare fraud - Yep

[ In Reply To ..]
I was so tired of busting my hump as a single mom getting no support from my daughter's father and taking the best possible care of her, only to watch these two freeloaders give their two kids everything under the sun, subsidizing my brother's VERY nice salary from his job with HER welfare, EBT and subsidized housing money.

They were both healthy, able-bodied individuals. She bragged to anyone who would listen about her welfare fraud and how her children were going to have what everyone else's children had, and she wouldn't have to lift a finger to work for it.

Going to visit them was a joke. They had big blinds inside and outside of their windows, and when you knocked on their door, all you could hear was commotion and footsteps all through the house as my brother scrambled to hide in case it was the welfare investigator. I was mortified. We were not raised to engage in this type of behavior and I freely admit I was infuriated that while I worked full-time as an MT to give my daughter everything possible and did without myself, these two were skating and collecting about an extra $800 a month in money, EBT, subsidized housing, etc., that some other TRULY needy family could use.

One day I had enough of it and called, claimed to be a neighbor and reported her. The worker told me he had been "onto them" for months and would definitely pay them a visit. When a couple of weeks went by and no visit, I made a followup call. The worker asked exactly which neighbor I was because he had gone door to door canvassing the area and could not find me. I finally 'fessed up that I was a family member, gave my identity, and, true to his word, the worker protected me every step of the way through the court proceedings, claiming he had "strong-armed" me with questioning and that I was a "reluctant/hostile" witness.

End of story, my brother served no time since he had signed no papers related to the fraud and she did 7 months.

I don't regret it for a single minute and I'd do it all over again. Right is right and wrong is wrong.

Good luck, whatever you decide.

Update On Welfare FraudOct 12, 2011
Well, after a lot of thought and discussion, we turned our information over to the appropriate authority.  It came down to family.  Our family.  What we can live with knowing and what we can't.  What kind of an example we want to set for our children.  While we have no plans to disclose this to our children now, maybe some day when they're older, we will use it to teach them a lesson about actions and consequences.  It also made us realize that maybe ...
