Kaiser study: Romney/Ryan privatized Medicare would cost 6 out of 10

Posted: Oct 22, 2012

From U.S. News and World Report:

"Nearly six in 10 Medicare recipients would pay higher premiums under a hypothetical privatized system along the lines of what Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has proposed, according to a study released Monday.

The report by the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation also found striking regional differences that could lead to big premium hikes in some states and counties. That finding instantly made it ammunition in the presidential campaign.

In the senior-rich political swing state of Florida, the hypothetical plan modeled by Kaiser would boost premiums for traditional Medicare by more than $200 a month on average. In Nevada, another competitive state, 50 percent of seniors would face additional monthly premiums of $100 or more for their coverage.

Not to mention an average of 59% increase in - out-of-pocket costs.

Since study after study indicates the powerful role poverty plays in poor health, I'm gonna go out here on a limb and speculate the hardest hit by this would be those who can afford it the least. Shocking? NOT.

Ryan's Medicare PlanAug 14, 2012
. . . the federal government's. If it's good enough for them . . . The NYT said Ryan has the same plan for Medicare as federal employees enjoy (published 04/18/2011). Also, Ryan wrote this: "Starting in 2022, new Medicare beneficiaries will be enrolled in the same kind of health care program that members of Congress enjoy." His op-ed about this was published in the WSJ. Sounds good to me! ...

Raising The Medicare Eligibility Age Would Cost Patients About Twice As Much,Dec 06, 2012
"When economists and policymakers worry about the long-term fiscal crisis, what they’re mostly worried about is Medicare. That’s why a persistent idea during this fiscal cliff season is raising the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67. It’s an idea that appears superficially to have many virtues. Bringing the Medicare retirement age into line with the Social Security retirement age seems logical. The change is simple to describe to journalists and the public."  & ...

Princeton Economist: Obama Distorted My Romney Plan StudyOct 08, 2012
A Princeton professor said the Obama campaign is misrepresenting his work in a campaign email it sent out, the Weekly Standard reported, and that Mitt Romney’s tax plan does not require raising taxes on the lower and middle class. The Obama campaign email said Romney’s tax plan would force him to raise taxes on the middle class and increase the deficit. "Even the studies that Romney has cited to claim his plan adds up still show he would need to raise middle-class taxes," the Obam ...

Romney/Ryan May Regret Fudging All The Details Of Their Plans.Sep 07, 2012
President Clinton alone gave enough numbers and specifics to provide quotes for almost any discussion that comes up. Obviously there was more than just his famous verbosity behind his hitting every single point of the GOP promises and every single point of the Dems' during his long speech. My big question is, when Governor Romney says he'll provide "lots of jobs," is he just keeping it and the rest of his plan simple for the unenquiring mind, or is he that determined not to reveal wha ...

Cost Of Getting Braces Going UpJan 11, 2013
Obamacare Medical Device Tax: As of Jan.1, Obamacare imposes a new tax of 2.3 percent on medical device manufacturers, including those who make dental braces. The tax is imposed on gross sales -- even if the company does not earn a profit in a given year. While the tax will be paid to the IRS by the manufacturer, the tax will be passed along as a higher cost of the product, ultimately to be borne by the parent buying the braces for their child. With the cost of braces being as high as $7,625 ...
