Hodson - smith

[ In Reply To ..]

Dr Gordon Hodson is quite obviously a bigot. In his own words:

Quote:

My primary research interests examine intergroup processes related to prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination. In particular, I am interested in: (a) subtle expressions of prejudice, such as aversive racism; (b) individual differences in prejudice, such as social dominance orientation and right-wing authoritarianism; (c) resistance to immigrants and immigration; (d) perceived group threat; (e) intergroup emotions, such as disgust and anxiety; (e) outgroup dehumanization; and (f) the benefits of intergroup contact and cross-group friendship for prejudice reduction.

When you start with a prejudiced and biased viewpoint, it doesn't take much to skew data to present the picture you want to show. Hodson's research starts on a blatantly leftist foundaton.

I think you would have to read the entire report and not just the capsule version in the HP. There are many people who are fiscal conservatives and social liberals. No one would call Michael Bloomberg stupid. If you take those at the extreme ends of the spectrum, going in either direction, you will find people who are looking for easy answers to complex problems and unwilling to do any of their own research.

This hardly reflects someone looking for "easy answers" to complex questions. It simply observes a correlation between low IQ, prejudice, right-wing etiology (in terms of social engineering, not fiscal policy) and low "intergroup" contact. Nowhere does it contend this is the ONLY explanation.

This is a very challenging article to say the least and for me would require re-reading as my cognitive abilities are not what they used to be. Still, I would suggest that trying to maintain the status quo, as the article points out, is a lot easier than looking for newer and probably more complex solutions to some very difficult problems.

they are superior and more intelligent, so they go and write up something to try in some sick way get people to actually believe that one group (their group that is of course) is smarter than the other, however, there is never any real evidence to prove that one group is smarter than the other. Plus the Huff has to go and dig up trash from other countries. AND on top of that Huff tries to link racism and and prejudisism with conservatives? Huh??? That would be like saying hunters, baby killers, and liberals. Reminds of of the game, what item doesn't fit with the others. It does prove true what the psychiatrist said about liberalism being a mental disorder. I feel sorry for them and wish they would really get the help they need. There may not be a cure, but with enough counseling they might just be more productive in society.

Why people even read Huff anymore I don't know. They publish garbage that has no facts to back up what they post. I guess they are grasping at straws to try and convince people that their political group is smarter than the other, but the more they spew that garbage it makes them look less intelligent.

Well, you just did the same thing that you are - upset about with your SM

remark about liberalism being a mental disorder.
That is what a psychiatrist has said and wrote about - what if - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
A veteran psychiatrist with over 30 years of research has written about this. Not some unknown liberal blogger that hates the other political party and decides he's going to write about it.

Just look at the actions of the liberals and you can see the pattern of mental instability. Counseling for them would be a good place to start.
This has been the subject of scientific inquiry - since the 1940s.
[ In Reply To ..]
The authors are PhDs in psychology who are exploring the role cognition plays in the evolution of social prejudice, the adoption of socially conservative ideologies and how it negatively impacts interaction with politically disparate outgroups, not some unknown liberal blogger with an axe to grind. The full study text links to scores of other PhDs in psychology, research methodology, sociology and psychiatry who have contributed to this body of data over the past 65 years or so.

As for your quack, Dr. Lyle Rossiter, even his original premise is a reactionary undertaking modeled after a 2003 study conducted by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes for Health, which found that social conservatism is a cluster of neuroses emanating from “fear and aggression, dogmatism, and the intolerance of ambiguity". Such intolerance often leads them “to cling to the familiar, to arrive at premature conclusions and impose simplistic cliches and stereotypes." Renown persons such as Ronald Reagan, Rush Limbaugh, Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler were chosen as textbook examples of how conservatives preach “a return to an idealised past and condone inequality.”

This publication was an analytical compendium of 88 separate studies examining conservative ideology, not the work of a political hack cloaked in the alleged legitimacy of a credentialed forensic psychiatrist, trying to sell a book to fringe outcasts.

Speaking of cloaks, if the dudes bedecked in white sheets and conehead hats are any indication, I'd say Hodson and Busseri are onto something.

Will try to read the entire article.

On a personal note, I have a friend who turned from a good NY Jewish liberal like me to a right-wing nut case. I've been trying to figure this out for years because low IQ is not the problem. The problem is fear; she is afraid of everything and the right-wing ideology caters to and supports those fears and exacerbates them.
Ahhh...I get it now - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
A liberal writes that conservatives fall in the same line with baby killers, KKK, lets see abortion clinic bombers, thieves, perverts, and whatever else they want to throw out there and that's okay, but a psychiatrist who studies this for his living is a "quack".

I get it now - thanks for clarifying your views.
You are missing the qualifier in the study - and in the OPs.
[ In Reply To ..]
The focus is on conservatives of the social engineering persuasion, not the fiscal cons who are out there preserving the lifestyles of the 1%ers and screwing the rest of us.

Rossiter is a forensic psychiatrist whose main source of income has been paid testimony in criminal cases, not "studying this for a living." Hating libs is a hobby that this industrious entrepreneur turned into a cash cow when he decided to target the most gullible and susceptible among the cognitively challenged by publishing his book that has been ridiculed and debunked by his own colleagues, thus turning himself into the butt of numerous jokes among his peers.
No, you are missing the point and you don't get it - what if - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
One of the statements in this so called study was "Do conservatives tend to be less intelligent than liberals". And they put it in the same context of racists with a big picture of KKK. Are you freakin kidding me? You think this is valid? On the contrary to what you want to believe, this is just a bunch of garbage. I know you believe that anyone who could possibly ever have any conservative ideas or heaven forbid anyone who voted for a republican is dumber than a doornail, but sorry sweetie, that just is not true no matter how bad you want to believe it. Just cos some idiot writes it doesn't mean it's true. Kind of reminds when I we had to keep telling my grandma that the National Enquirer stories are not all true.

Hating libs is a hobby? You took the words right out of many of our mouths because looking at thousands of articles on the internet and reading this political board the exact opposite is true. Hating republicans is a hobby. I know you don't want to think that. It's always easier to play the victim role, but be honest to yourself and take a step back. Hating conservatives has been a hobby ever since Bush was president and now its even more strong as you can see by the article you so proudly believe is true.

If Dr. Sean Hannity wrote an article stating he and some university in Chernobyl or Frankfurt or anywhere have studied this for hundred of years that libs were ignorant and less intelligent than pubs you'd be the first to say its a bunch of hogwash. And if they linked it with other unrelated things and wrote an article like "Are pedophiles dumb? Do liberals tend to be less intelligent than conservatives" and then they had a big picture of some guy having sex with a dog, you'd be sitting there scratching your head wondering what do liberals have to do with pedophiles or people having sex with animals. This is no different. And reading the article there is no proof (i.e. facts) to back this up. You'll believe the study of this psychologist because it fits with how you want to believe, but another psychiatrist writes an article of the opposite and you call him a quack.

Contrary to what you want to believe, not all conservatives are stupid, carry concealed weapons, cling to bibles, and are rich holding back the poor. Whoever has brainwashed liberals into believe that has done a pretty good job, however, it proves the exact opposite of the article. Liberals are less intelligent if they cannot think for themselves and instead wish to believe a garbage article staying that the group they affiliate with is more intelligent.

Oh and BTW - That "lifestyle of the 1%ers and screwing the rest of us" Hate to burst your victim role bubble, but the guys in your club (Mr. Obama and the rich democrats in congress) are protecting those 1%ers. Ya just kind of inconveniently leave that part out don't ya.

The article that Huff had to go so low to pull from another country is nothing but a poorly written piece of garbage with no real evidence or facts to back up their claims of how their political group is far more superior than those dumb-arse whitey republicans. I'll say one thing for sure about the libs. They think they are far more superior and intelligent than others with their elitist attitude, but their actions prove them wrong.
You got that right - mbmt

That is new to me. Maybe you should make a list of all the things you don't want to be called. We have local nick "names" that we call people, and it is all in fun. Also, I don't think I have observed a liberal post calling someone racist. I think rascism has been discussed as a "group think" type of topic. There is someone here who likes to accuse people of calling others racists, but I have never seen it, just the person who rants about others being, I guess, reverse-racists. Also the Socialist name calling is totally uncalled for. No one is a socialist because they believe in Medicare, social security and the opportunity to have an education, health care and a job.
Terms of endearment - No, but must bother you

You read alot into posts that just is not there. OP must have really hit your lib nerve. Have seen PLENTY of nasty from the Dems/libs. Guess Dems/libs insults are so commonplace, you're immune to the level they have dropped to in the way they describe anyone not agreeing with them. See none of your "fun" (sick description) on this board. Just very nasty, hateful comments. Maybe you should read some of these posts as if they were written to you; but you would walk away with a different idea of "fun". Now get together with your other little lib friends for your "group think". Guess it takes a group of you to come up with some of these ridiculous assumptions.

I don't post often here, but I recently read some tiresome thread about "Crackers" (it was cold and slippery outside and I was stuck in the house without work). At first I thought you all were discussing saltines, but then I realized something else was going on. I am surprised someone would be so offended. In my neck of the woods, I am referred to as a "Jackpine Savage." I think technically that is a reference to someone who is of French Canadian or Scandinavian / American Indian descent who avoids urban areas. Certainly probably derogatory in some people's eyes, but I rather like the name and am proud of my heritage. Certainly don't go around with my nose in the air whenever I hear it. Oh well. Whenever you want to play the victim, go ahead, and play by yourself.

Problem is that we don't get news anymore without having to watch a self-important anchor. That's what happens when corporations take over our news stations. Anyone who believes Fox is fair and balanced needs to have their heads examined. Liberalism is a mental disorder is nothing more than republican rhetoric right which is regurgitated all the time by the Ann Coulter/Rush Limbaugh fans. I might be a lot of things but a republican isn't one of them, thank God! Keep listening to those talking heads for your rhetoric and stupidity, but at least understand they're making money off of you. Of course, they're just being good Capitalists. Yours is incoherent.

As for MSNBC, they have conducted a number of fund raisers to provide free health care for the poor which have been deluged with sick people who cannot get care under our current system. There have been other fund raisers as well which have garnered many contributions from all the liberals you so despise.

Try to remember, too, that without liberals you would have no Social Security, no Medicare; if you are a woman you would not have the right to vote. Conservatives opposed all these measures. (I paraphrase Lawrence O'Donnell) But of course you would not believe him either.

I was trying to look for information regarding this. The internet has a flurry of conservative-hatting articles (most by personal bloggers), but after combing though many I found an interesting article, which is pretty accurate. It's dealing mostly with science, but he has some pretty spot on observations of liberals.

Liberals believe they have a monopoly on brains.

If you donât think that liberals think that they are somehow intellectually superior to conservatives and independents, then you havenât been paying attention.

Liberalsâ high opinion of themselves (and correspondingly low opinion of non-liberals) extends to specific disciplines, most notably science. You donât have to look far for examples. President Obama in his inauguration speech promised to ârestore science to its rightful place,â as though it had been on hiatus during the eight years of the Bush presidency.

Heâs not alone. The most famous science-lover of the day is former Vice President Al Gore, who spends much of his waking hours assailing the intergrity of the "pseudo-scientists" who disagree with him on the subject of climate change.

Another defender of science, not surprisingly, is economist and New York Times op-ed writer Paul Krugman, who just today penned a piece titled âRepublicans Against Science.â In it Krugman, laments the distinct probability that Jon Huntsman will not win the Republican nomination because he âhas been willing to say the unsayable about the G.O.P.ânamely, that it is becoming the âanti-science party.â This is an enormously important development. And it should terrify us.â

I assume that Krugman doesnât really care who wins the GOP nomination (as long as it is someone who will lose to Barack Obama), but he mentions Huntsman as a bridge into more Perry bashing. (You can see a theme emerging.) And itâs not just Perry who is dangerous. Krugman cites a survey by Public Policy Polling showing that only 21 percent of Republican voters in Iowa believe in global warming.

The liberal viewâof science, a theoretical debate lasts only as long as one side says it lasts. Never mind if there is an equally valid, competing theory that captures the data as well or (perish the thought) better. Once one group of scientists says the debate is over, it is over. Nothing more to see here. Everyone go home.
