Not only did they extend the tax cuts but they pushed back spending cuts. Both wrong in my opinion. Get rid of the tax cuts...let them expire for everyone. Why are they pushing back spending cuts? Isn't our biggest problem our debt and yet they push back spending cuts? HUH? Isn't that a tad counter productive to getting down our debt? I am so disgusted with any and all politicians. I'm to the point where I don't believe either party really wants to fix this country. I'm not seeing it from either party. Makes me sick!

As I alluded to a post below, temporary tax cuts and holidays are counterproductive. They may be a form of stimulus, but once we incorporate them into our budgets we count on them, and when tax cuts expire, we have to find a way to make up for it, so we spend less. Recession is inevitable, so tax cuts for all intents and purposes have to be extended for the middle class.
Spending cuts will be addressed. This isn't the end of it. Seems like a very complex undertaking, and since so much time was wasted it makes sense that they hash it out with a new congress in a new year. But to continue to waste time on petty bickering hopefully will not be acceptable.
I'm with you on parties' motivation (re fixing the country): politics versus politicians doing their jobs.
Just wait... tax cuts will be - gone before too long.

The great congress of "the greatest generation" (WWII era) routinely compromised across the aisle, outvoting extremists on both sides, but there was little ideological gap compared to now.
That's what we've got to work on now--finding common ground again, which is why I'm happy this morning. It's not the bill itself but rather that, imperfect and inadequate as it is, this time Congress worked as it's meant to. Something for us, something for them until both sides feel they have something they can live with.
BTW, if this little move forward makes you feel sick, you may want to save yourself by taking a politics holiday in a couple of months. That promises to be a real cages-left-open-at-the-zoo event. And the final compromise will be sickening to the many on both sides who aren't used to the realities of compromise.
I'm actually kind of looking forward to it, albeit with some trepidation. It's a dirty business at the sausage plant, but I have a strong stomach. :)
