I don't understand what the Clint Eastwood thing was all about

Posted: Aug 31, 2012

I've always liked Clint Eastwood, but his rambling speech did nothing to bring any clarity to important issues or tell us anything we don't know about Romney/Ryan. I didn't see the point. I felt sorry for him because he didn't look or sound well, but why did the planners put him in that embarrassing position. He was clearly out of place. That wasn't fair to him. It made him look incompetent trying to speak on politics and having nothing of value to say.

Clint - RC

I see him around the grocery store, and he has not looked well in years. It's sad.

Well, they DID say they had a... - ....mystery speaker, and...

[ In Reply To ..]
...it still remains a mystery why anyone thought that would be a good idea.

His appearance really broke up a nice rollout of Romney's big moment by having him come between the introduction video montage and Romney's actual speech.

I doubt that anyone with the Romney camp thinks that was a good idea, in hindsight. My husband commented that they should've put an actual comedian in that slot if they wanted some comedy relief.

Clint Eastwood - the consummate actor - Dara

put on a great show, mixed comedy with some important advice about how to get our country back on track, said things that took real guts. It was almost an Obama roast type of performance, although I know "someone" will be offended because he can't take a joke. Loved it.

I agree.... - SK1

[ In Reply To ..]
I, admittedly, thought it was a little odd, but he DID get to say things that no politician would be able to ("He can't do that to himself." LOL) and was able to do it with comedy.

As for his appearance and state of health, the man's 82 years old. He's earned every wrinkle and crack in his voice.

I thought the Republicans were supposed to see themselves as - a party of values rather than vular language

[ In Reply To ..]
The language was vulgar, even the implied language was clearly vulgar. There was nothing to be proud of there, nothing noble or honorable about it.
Misinformed again. Too much MSNBC or Rev. Al. - LM (sm)

Where on earth you people get your info is just beyond me.
Reverend Al? - hmmmm
[ In Reply To ..]
Where did we get THAT particular reference? And what does Reverend Al have to do with Clint Eastwood? Transparency lives in your posts.

Had it been coherent and/or funny... - (s/m)

[ In Reply To ..]
...maybe then I would admit it was well-placed. It was neither, from where I sat. You don't help Romney's cause by trying to defend this appearance. I highly doubt that there will be anyone from the campaign who unofficially thinks this was good, in hindsight.

I have a good sense of humor and can definitely take a joke, but some of the things Clint Eastwood said were downright disrespectful....and if he meant them to be a funny "roast" type of thing, he really missed the mark.

It appears that the Obama camp CAN - take a joke.

[ In Reply To ..]
They tweeted a photo of Pres. Obama sitting in a chair with "President" on the back of it, saying, "This seat is taken." THAT shows a sense of humor.

DH and I loved it too. We both laughed out loud. (sm) - Aunt Sue

[ In Reply To ..]
especially at the parts about you can't do that to yourself. We're both, especially him, big fans and I know we've seen the Dirty Harry movies hundreds of times. It's sad that people have to get old, but unfortunately so are we, so we were just hoping he wouldn't forget what he was saying, like we sometimes do. LOL - I think Clint really added something to the convention. Leave it to MSNBC, of course, to make fun of his hair. He's 82 years old, for God's sake. MSNBC is so low class, though, I really wouldn't expect any different from them.

Since you're a fan - RC

[ In Reply To ..]
Clint owns a conservation/tract home community here, and one of my friends worked on the houses there. My friend was driving home from work in the community, and Clint came behind him and "pulled him over" for going too fast.

Clint got out of his car and walked up to my friend's truck and looked at him and said, true to form, "Do you work for me?" with that Dirty Harry look, then proceeded to chastise him for driving too fast. LOL

He truly is Clint Eastwood, wherever he goes!
Thanks for posting that!! Clint is Clint - (sm) - Aunt Sue
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not surprised. I can really imagine him doing that! Isn't it really hard seeing those you love, whether it be on a personal level or just an actor you like, grow old? We still picture him as Dirty Harry! Glad to hear he still ACTS like it!
It is hard, even if you don't *know* them. - RC

I used to bag groceries, and once bagged Clint and Dina's (!). The checker told him "My grandma has a picture of you over her toilet." OMG! Clint just stared at him, like "Seriously?"

See, this is my and only celebrity connection, so I'm really eating this up! LOL
Hey, I would be too! LOL - Aunt Sue

I would so burst into tears if that happened to me. I would be waiting for the "do you feel lucky" line.

(PS -- If my husband makes me watch The Good, The Bad and The Ugly one more time I might have to stick a hot poker in my eye.)

Getting old is fine, but his presentation was unnecessarily sleazy - I thought it was disgraceful

[ In Reply To ..]
There was nothing admirable about it. They took advantage of an old man by putting him out there and encouraging him to give some kind of Vaudeville-like show, which failed miserably.

What did any of that have to do with electing a president? They should be ashamed.

Going off WAY off message. - Important advice?

[ In Reply To ..]
Important advice:

“Do you just—you know—I know—people were wondering—you don’t—handle that OK.”

“And I thought, yeah, I am not going to shut up. It’s my turn.”

The Guantanamo comment was pretty confused. Mr Make My Day agreed with Obama's decision not to close Guantanamo, since we had spent so much money on it (!), and was happy with Obama's overrule of detainees' being tried in NYC. Eastwood never explained why President Obama is not qualified for the presidency because he has a law degree, while Romney's law degree does not disqualify him.

Prime Time RNC went off-script bigtime:

It's OK that Obama opposed the Iraq War. It's not OK for President Obama to announce an Afghanistan troops withdrawal date, but it's OK for Clint Eastwood to announce an IMMEDIATE troop withdrawal, unbeknownst and in direct opposition to Nominee Romney's expressed intent to actually adopt Obama's troop withdrawal 2014 calendar, but not announce it? Huh? Did I miss a flip-flop somewhere along the line?

Team Romney failed to manage its prime time convention presentation. I guess they were so starved for star power, they decided to skip the vetting part. Not exactly what I'd call a knee-slapping side-splitter.

IDK, but they may have something to do with the - halftime SB commercial

[ In Reply To ..]
First, the pubs don't have very many Hollywood types to choose from (even Clint only named Jon Voight in his speech last night if I remember correctly), let alone Hollywood icons who represent the all-American tough guy and cowboy.

It could be they wanted to make sure that folks didn't think Clint jumped ship and actually supported Obama after seeing the Super Bowl commercial (I put the link in for anyone who wants it).

The guy is 82. Whether or not you agree with what he says, you gotta cut him some slack if he stumbled for some words. However, whoever was in charge of making the decision to let him go up there unscripted should be fired (which I'm sure Mitt will enjoy doing). What a dumb move. I couldn't imagine letting my grandfather go up on stage unscripted on live TV (the bleep button would be working overtime).

I'll bet that was what Donald Trump was supposed to do - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Remember he was supposed to have some big surprise. I'll bet he was supposed to do this and 'fire' President Obama, but they fired Trump instead and hired Clint Eastwood. I have no respect for Donald Trump, but he would have at least had enough respect for the audience to keep his speech clean, or maybe he wouldn't. He doesn't really respect anyone or anything but his own mouth.

Trump probably would have been even worse...sm - JTBB

[ In Reply To ..]
Prior to the convention there were reports of him being seen with an Obama impersonator.....yeah...it actually could have been worse...lol.

So thanks to their choice of people to represent the Republican Party - we are not talking about jobs

[ In Reply To ..]
So because of the Republican Party's choice of people to represent them, we aren't talking about the things that really matter. We're talking about Dirty Harry.

Lighten up. Don't be so serious. Bad for your health.(sm) - Aunt Sue

Really. Are you getting worried? Is that it?

I just have more respect for our country then to turn it into a circus - First Trump, now Eastwood - Our country deserves serious thinkers

I don't find the condition of our country to be a laughing matter.
Should tell Obama that. He's out golfing and tweeting. - Aunt Sue (sm)
[ In Reply To ..]
Also, while we're on the subject, what is YOUR president actually doing about our guys in Afghanistan? Why doesn't he bring them home tomorrow as was suggested?
Obama's doing what YOUR guy is planning to do. - Adhere to military advisers' 2014 timeline.
[ In Reply To ..]
He's just saying it out loud, undeterred by whether or not his "base" approves of his decision or not. I kinda think it's the soldiers and families he has utmost in mind, especially now that OBL is out of the picture.

BTW, check the POTUS calendar. He won't be making a golf course stopover at Fort Bliss, just quietly visiting with military families, marking an important anniversary and a promise kept which he made back in 2008.
It's just campaigning. Most servicemen can't stand him. - that's a fact.

Clint Eastwood's bizarre speech at the Republican National Convention last week didn't go over so well with voters in Florida and North Carolina, but it didn't hurt his overall image, a pair of new polls show. According to a survey conducted by Public Policy Polling, 41 percent of Floridians said they had a negative opinion of Eastwood's 12-minute improvised riff, which featured the 82-year-old Academy Award-winning actor and director pretending to have a conversation with a ...

First let me say I am neither Republican nor Democrat. I have never had an interest in politics, but this election is so important, I felt I had to take it upon myself to become more knowledgeable. They are so entrenched in their own affiliation that they don't even want to discuss that maybe the other party could be even partly right about even one issue! This attit ...
