I just don't understand how the Dems expect to get any state out

Posted: Feb 25, 2011

of the hole dug by unions when they oppose the 3 main options that have surfaced.  Do they expect to wave a majic wand and it will all go away? Or do they think they have better ideas and what exactly are they? I have not heard a thing on their plans or ideas...but I really have been so sick of politicking that I haven't watched, or read, any news for the past few days.

Dems are against reducing/eliminating certain state programs (60%), against reduced pay/benefits for state workers (63%), AND against raising the state sales or income taxes (62%). So what do they propose?

BTW, they also oppose the pubs attempt to cut the federal deficit. Do they care about the country or do they think this problem will also disappear? IMHO, spending more will not cure the problem. Look where it got us in the past years. Cuts wil help, but won't solve the problem overnight.

From the Gallup poll:

As state budgets are hammered out across the country, leaders may find it more difficult to find solutions that are acceptable to rank-and-file Democrats than to Republicans. That's because majorities of Democrats (approximately 6 in 10) oppose each of the three main strategies tested for reducing deficits. By contrast, more than three-fourths of Republicans (78%) oppose raising taxes, but majorities favor eliminating or reducing certain state programs (65%) and reducing worker pay and benefits (51%).

Independents show solid opposition to tax increases, but are about evenly divided in their reactions to reductions in state programs and worker pay.

Nobody should, huh? We should just hand over ALL rights for ANY worker to stand up to employers. Ever thought about what would happen to their pay (AND yours) if big business had no one to answer to or set some kind of standards? This is a no brainer if history has anything to teach us. After Hitler scrapped labor unions in 1933, real wages dropped by 25 percent across the board. Whats that they say about cutting off your nose to spite your face? Be my guest.

to protect all workers. Unions don't protect me and don't represent the majority of Americans.

If a company treats it's employees like trash (but not breaking any labor laws), then word would get around fast with the help of things like boycotts and social networking. If the company was truly evil and taking advantage of workers, it would ultimately go under.

Let the workers and the customers decide which companies are successful, not the unions.

Please tell me it's true and that you just need a secret password or tell 'em "Paulie sent ya" because I'm about to lose my house because my company overhires and then lets us sit with NJA all day. I had just came off unemployment after being offshored twice in order to get this job, too. There was "plenty of work" supposedly. Oh... not to mention the 10 cpl to 8 cpl pay cut I had to take, too. Please... lemme know that password. They basically told me that I was SOL.

Think about it... where should I (and MANY others) go? MT is what I know how to do; it's what I paid a lot of money to go to school to learn how to do at one time. Career change or pursuing further education when pushing 40 and have a mortgage and a family to feed is not easy. And think about it... why should I? Because the fatcats at the top are greedy? Because we haven't (or maybe won't be able to at some point) stand up for ourselves and demand fairness? Even though I went to school years ago and not too long ago finally paid off my student loans, if I tried to go back, I would have to rely on student loans and perhaps grants... programs that people are looking to take away (and I wouldn't have to even look into if it weren't for company greed in the first place). And let's say I did go back, finished up and got my 4-year degree, then what? Still not be able to pay my mortgage because, if some people again have their way, employers will be free to set whatever standards/salary they see fit whether or not it's in the workers' best interest?

Look at this industry! Overhiring, offshoring, low pay, the risk of losing benefits (if you don't meet minimum requirements but not being provided enough work to meet minimum), ICs having to work a set schedule, not even offering FT employees benefits... it's unacceptable, but it is a perfect example of letting the companies set the standard. Is the goal to have these conditions everywhere? And if that goal is reached, where do you think you'll be when the desperate scramble for any half-way decent job starts?

Not necessarily you, but in general, I don't understand the midset here (and since this is an MT board, I'm assuming most comments left here are by regular old "worker bees"). Yes, I can understand the disgust and outrage over union bigwigs and the politics behind it all, but the outrage against the workers - the people in all of our communities, our neighbors, and even us - to me seems totally misguided. And defending taking away their rights... I don't get it.

for their employees (not ICs). I launched into a discussion touching on these same issues: Committed set hours, requirements to clock in and out and in an out, stretching 8 hours into 12 or 14 when NJA rules the day, nosediving pay rates, outsourcing, etc. When I reached the subject of prodution pay scales and talked in terms of CPL, it was like I was suddenly coming from outer space. The rep kept interrupting me and asking me how those rates translated into dollars per hour or other familiar salary structures. I tried to explain how work availability affects that on a daily basis, and that in any given week or month, hourly wage estimates or monthly salary estimates would vary across a very broad range of value. I spent nearly 20 minutes with her, then her supervisor, trying to get this point across. Despite how much I hammered away at these concepts, we were speaking two different languages.

Guess what I got in return? On great big fat D-D-D-DDDUUUUHHH. DOL? I am so sure.

Isn't it fun?! This is how I explained it to them: I was hired by a company at 8 cpl (which is just disgusting, but I was desperate). When I was hired, I was told that I would have to make a MINIMUM of 1200 lines over an 8-hour period per day, which translates to $96/day or $12/hour MINIMUM (I can't survive on that, but at least that was the safety net I was working with). With the company not providing enough work to make the minimum that was agreed to, the fair thing to do would be for the company to pay that minimum, $96/8 hours of my time. But I wasn't even going for that, I wanted to see if the lines that I was provided throughout the course of that 8-hour period totaled less than what minimum wage would pay for that 8-hour period, if my company legally had to pay me minimum wage for 8 hours minus the amount my lines totaled. You get this, right? Well... they did NOT get it at all! They basically told me that I was SOL because I'm paid on production. He didn't even want to hear that I am REQUIRED to dedicate 8 hours of my day to the company. He responded with a "Well, you're at home." Super!

I used Hoffa since most people recognize his name.  Do you think that the mob isn't tied to the unions and vise versa?   It has been going on for many, many years.  I thought it was just common knowledge.  It doesn't take long to find mob/union ties and the link to the hard earned money stolen from the workers under the guise of union dues.

The best part - I even found one you can trust!  The source is from a HuffPoster a couple of weeks ago.  Surprised

Twenty-five years after the historic Commission case exposed the Colombo crime family’s stranglehold over the union representing workers on all major New York construction projects, Local 6A of the New York Cement and Concrete Workers is still a family affair – in more ways than one.

Today, the grandson of a mobster who was convicted of racketeering at the Commission trial is Local 6A’s key official. And the crime family’s boss who was found guilty at the same trial, Carmine (Junior) Persico, is still the ultimate power behind the union, according to the special counsel for the Laborers’ International Union of North America.

The imprisoned-for-life Persico has controlled the union through several underlings over the years, says LIUNA special counsel Robert Luskin. They include onetime “street boss” Thomas (Tommy Shots) Gioeli and capo Dino (Big Dino) Calabro – two longtime Persico loyalists who allegedly whacked Junior’s longtime nemesis William (Wild Bill) Cutolo in 1999.

Tommy Shots has remained loyal since his 2008 indictment for Cutolo’s murder. But Big Dino has been cooperating with the feds for some time. And one of the many subjects Calabro spilled his guts about, says Luskin, was the large cast of characters – including his brothers, Vincenzo and Giuseppe – who helped him run the union for the Colombos and reap the benefits as well.

Numerous Colombo wiseguys, their relatives, friends, and cohorts affiliated with other crime families were handed no-show and seldom-show jobs, says Luskin.

They also shared in payoffs from contractors and a variety of other schemes, including a “coffee boy” scam, according to Luskin. In that rip-off, which occurred at every job site, all workers were forced to buy any food and drink they wanted – whether at lunch or during any breaks – from a mob-selected vendor who kicked back $250 a week to the Colombos.

In a complaint filed two weeks ago, Luskin asked LIUNA’s Independent Hearing Officer to oust all the current officials of the Flushing, Queens based local and replace them with a trustee to “eradicate the corrupt influence of organized crime.”

The complaint states that the day-to-day mob front man at Local 6A is business manager Ralph Scopo III, whose grandfather, Colombo soldier Ralph Scopo Sr. ran the union in the 1980s. Scopo III, 40, earned $160,600 in 2009 as the key official of the 1047 member union. Scopo’s brother, Joseph, 35, is the union’s recording secretary.

Back in 1986, Ralph Scopo Sr. and Persico were found guilty of racketeering and sentenced to 100 years. Scopo’s sons, Ralph Jr. and Joseph, followed him into the crime family and took over his union – with Ralph Jr. serving as president and Joseph as vice president – until both were bounced from their union posts a year later.

Joseph Scopo’s stock in the crime family rose until he was killed during the bloody Colombo war in 1993 – the same year his dad died in prison. But Ralph Scopo Jr. and the Colombo crime family still run the union, and steal from its members regularly, through Ralph Scopo III, and a host of puppets they control, according to Luskin.

And like their father and late grandfather before them, Scopo III is controlled lock, stock and cement mixer by the still imprisoned Mafia boss, Junior Persico, according to Luskin.

Luskin painted Scopo III, his father, and a host of other Local 6A officials as lying, money-hungry leeches who have been stealing money from hardworking laborers for at least nine years – the same way the late Scopo Sr. did in the 1980s.

Since the Local 6A probe moved into high gear two years ago, nine union officials and members, including Calabro’s brothers, have been ousted or resigned rather than answer questions about their mob connections from LIUNA’s lead investigator, former FBI mob buster Bruce Mouw.

In 2002, when Big Dino first met Scopo Jr., the longtime labor racketeer praised his abilities as a moneymaker, and set the stage for the way things would operate for the next six years, until Calabro was arrested and detained without bail, according to the complaint.

“I’m in charge of Local 6A and control everything that happens in that local,” he told Big Dino. “My son is a delegate and he runs the Local. If anybody need a job, just let me know and I’ll take care of it through my son.”

Calabro met Scopo III two years later, when his father brought him to a regular monthly get-together that Scopo Jr. had with Big Dino at a “bagel store on Route 109 in West Babylon” to talk business and split the money they brought in that month.

“During this meeting, Scopo Jr. gave Calabro $10,000 as his monthly share from the shakedown” of one contractor, the complaint said. “Calabro kept $1,000 for himself; Scopo Jr. took $1,500 for himself, and the remaining $7,500 went to the Colombo Family Administration.”

A few years later, according to the complaint, Big Dino and the father and son Scopos attended a sitdown to settle a dispute at a World Trade Center jobsite with a union foreman who had been “criticizing the Scopos.” The elder Scopo “told Calabro that his son Ralph was there in case he decided that (the union worker) needed to be physically assaulted,” the complaint said.

When Ralph Scopo learned about Calabro’s cooperation, and LIUNA’s investigation, he and his fellow union officials assumed they would eventually be bounced as corrupt, according to the complaint. So they decided to grab as much union cash as they could, and took vacation time checks – as many as eight weeks worth – before they were due, let alone earned.

Questioned about this last year, Scopo admitted that the LIUNA probe “was in the back of his mind,” the complaint said. “Why save vacation time if the Local is placed into trusteeship?” he added.

We are a democracy, not a dictatorship. We all have the right to negotiate pay and benefits even if we don't belong to a union. I did at my last outside job and did very well all by myself. Got a raise every year and 100% vested in the pension plan from the very first day on the job.

It is different today, but unions are not being scrapped. The states just want the unions to lower their expectations in the collective bargaining rule to follow the CPI for wages and pensions instead of the exorbitant amounts they now practically force the taxpayers and states to pay.

To leave the unions with the upper hand in all negotiations is not democratic and not productive, especially when it's virtually impossible to fire a union member, even if their work records shows they don't carry their own weight.

My son went through that problem on his last job. Most of them worked as a team, but there are a few that sat back and watched the rest work. They can't be fired but filing a complaint gets the complainer (his friend, the shop steward)fired. That's okay by you?

I have a similar story of a family member. I guess it may come through as the previous poster said "jealousy," but I'm just calling it fairness. There are very, very few companies who even offer pensions now.

I'll bet that some of the protesters they have set up for tomorrow across the nation will be some of the same people who picketed in front of the Wall Street executives' homes not long ago because of their high salaries.

Here's how I see it:
1. Big-wig Wall Street executives.
2. Union workers.
3. The rest of us (AKA working poor).

So, #2 was picketing/targeting #1 because they make too much money. How soon until the time when #3 (me) gets parody with #2?

My friends at GM here in the "Motor City" (cough/gag) just received some really nice bonuses. Some bonuses were 50% of their entire salary. They say, "thank you Obama-Motors/taxpayer/working poor."

[ In Reply To ..]
Yikes! If my math is correct, that would be:

$3500 x 12 = $42,000 per year

$42,000 per year x 30 years (just assuming he/she lives until his/her early 80s) equals a grand total of $1,260,000 for the pension payment only - medical benefits not included.

How could ANY city, county or state continue to pay these amounts? They can't do it. Just look at California to see what happens.

That's what I'm saying - now that is for both he and his wife but still. And they are by no means getting an incredibly large pension - just average for state workers in our poor state. I love my brother and I'm happy he made the "right" decision to become a state worker when he was young, but geesh. . I have worked every day since I was young and will probably be working until I can draw SS - which probably won't be enough to live on. There is no way this can go on in our state - we simply can't afford it. But goodness, don't dare mention it to any of them - there's no doubt in my mind they will be out there protesting too if somebody tries to make any changes.

[ In Reply To ..]
The public sector employees with their rich benefit plans and pensions are receiving these benefits on the backs of private sector workers. I resent the fact that my tax money is paying for their retirement and health care benefits and I have no money to pay for my own. Nobody is going to take care of me when I retire (come to think of it, I won't be retiring).

Here in my state, a number of high level state college employees, including at least 2 college presidents, have "retired," for a month, claiming their full pensions (in the neighborhood of $80,000 a year), and then gone back to work in their original position at full pay. This "double dipping" is legal based on how the pension system is set up. So we taxpayers are paying their full pensions when they aren't even retired, along with their full salary! This is absolutely outrageous! This garbage has got to stop. No wonder nobody trusts the government, they're raping the rest of us with the help of the unions, and I'm sick of it.

1.  They removed God from their platform - and then they actually BOOED when they had to jam it back in.  Barry knew all about this, incidentally, and had absolutely no objection to the removal action - until the political potato got too hot for him to handle.  Now he's pretending that he rode in like the Lone Ranger and "saved God".  Disgusting. 2.  A Dem leader in Florida said that Christians want Jews to be massacred. 3.  A Dem legislator in Arkansas plead ...

How The Dems Do ThingsSep 06, 2012
1.  The entire DNC is being subsidized with a $10 million line of credit from Duke Energy. 2.  The CEO of Duke Energy is one of Obama's biggest contributors - $tens of thousands. 3.  Duke Energy has received over $200 million in stimulus money for "green jobs". So, while Elizabeth Warren was standing up on the podium whining about a "rigged economy", she was speaking over a microphone that was paid for with "rigging" of the first order. Good job, Dems!  You're R ...

THIS IS WHAT DEMS LOSING LOOKS LIKEOct 04, 2012
They set themselves up to lose earlier this week b/c they knew that man-to-man, without the editing prowess of MSNBC and the networks, that their guy would lose big time....and he did. However, after debate - it's all good. "CNN poll must be way skewed," they said, "with way to many republicans in the poll."  Really - that's something CNN has never been guilty of before...why would they start now? Just take the loss, admit your guy is running on nothing and, therefore, had ...

So, Fellow DemsJul 30, 2013
I've read a campaign for Hillary has already raised over a million dollars in its first quarter--I really think she's planning on running. This article also mentions a likely Biden run. What I want to know is, which would you rather see run? I hope it's Hillary--Biden is fine as a VP, but I think he's a little too off his rocker to be president.   ...

Funny How The Dems Were All Oh No You Don't For Voter ID, Yet Sep 03, 2012
they are requiring photo ID to get into their convention.  Some very good tweets in response to this at Twitchy. I loved the one pointing out the fact that the state IDs are free and that the people Dems argued would be shut out of voting still would need the very same public transportion or whatever to get the ID for the convention! Oh, and there will be a zone around the convention hall requiring those living within the zone to have a picture ID to get to their homes!  Idiot hypocri ...

Dems Melt Down And Infighting At Its Best-Sep 05, 2012
Fault that the DEMOCRATS wrote the DEMOCRAT platform choosing to leave out God and throw Israel under the bus.   This was stated right after the DEMOCRATS said they approved every single aspect, every single speech, every single itinerary of the convention.  Is there no end to the insanity or the depths that Democrats will go to in blaming other people for their complete incompetency....Oh wait, the DEMOCRATS already answered that question.  It is also being reporte ...

Dozens Of Dems Join GOP For Nov 15, 2013
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2013/11/15/house-passes-proposed-gop-obamacare-changes/?hpt=hp_t1 House passes proposed GOP Obamacare changes (CNN) - The GOP-controlled House voted 261-157 to approve a Republican bill giving health insurers the option of extending plans through 2014 that would otherwise be canceled for not complying with Affordable Care Act standards. The bill would also allow new customers to enroll in those plans. Thirty-nine Democrats crossed party lines and joine ...

As A Conservative, It Really Bothers Me That The DemsFeb 11, 2016
As odd as it might seem, I really wish the Democrats had a decent candidate, for the simple reason that I have no faith in the electorate after 2012.  This country is just crazy enough to actually elect one of these miscreants, and if they do that will put the last nail in the coffin of what was once a great country.   ...

Dems Repubs And IndependentsJan 18, 2016
Typically I decide to vote person by person, not party line. Over the 50 some odd years I've watched and the high school and colllege courses I've taken, here's the gist of dems repubs and independents. Democrats: Share some so everybody gets something. Keep the status quo because that is what got us where we are and we don't want the idle able bodied to take it away. Work hard and you'll rise to the level your own abilities let you. Republicans: I worked hard for thi ...

Watch Out Dems, It's About To Bite YouMay 11, 2017
I saw reporting yesterday that said everyone in the intelligence community knows that unmasking requests are thoroughly documented. The report also said Comey was slow walking the requests from Congress regarding that documentation. This may mean that all the bluster you see from Republicans in Congress right now about Comey getting fired is just a smokescreen. They want to be on the record as fair-minded individuals, opposing Trump, fully supporting the Russia investigation (knowing nothing ...
