Cruz wants to shut down the government...cuz they're

Posted: Jul 30, 2013

I'm tired of the obstruction. People are warning him this is going to harm the GOP, and they're right. It's hard enough to get anything done in goverment--and they call Democrats the mule? All I see is the GOP digging their feet in and refusing to cooperate.

Normally I'd be all for the GOP making stupid decisions and guarenteeing a Dem win in 2016, but I'm tired of our politicians acting like children.

Instead of building a better country, we have senators declaring their ultimate goals are to prevent reelection of the president. Filibusters and government shut-down threats. Then when things don't get done, they point their finger at the president. It's shameful.

We get it--the GOP are sore losers. Well they better get used to it, because they're ensuring many years of losing in the future.

You Mean Rafael Cruz from Canada? - Who Cares What He Thinks?

[ In Reply To ..]
Oh, that's right, even though his father is a Cuban and fought for Castro in the Cuban Revolution, and Rafael Edward "Ted" Cruz was actually born in Canada and not in the United States, the Tea Party and the "birther nation" care what he has to say. Mind you, these are the same people who don't think Obama is qualified to be President because he was, according to them, born in another country (Hawaii actually) to a father from another country.

Rafael Cruz, Tea Party favorite: He's our non-American born candidate with a non-American father, so he's a-okay.

Gotta love the hypocrisy of it all.

You're Credibility Is Showing - Not Trying to Diagnose, but....

[ In Reply To ..]
Two things:
1. Your use of the word "everything" in all capital letters undermines your credibility. The current POTUS admits that his name is Barack Hussein Obama (it showed up on the ballot that way), yet people like Willard Romney, whose father was born in Mexico, and Rafael Cruz, whose father was born in Cuba and whom himself was born in Canada, have to resort to running for office using their middle names and not their actual names. Saying the POTUS lies about everything because you do not agree with his political beliefs says more about you than it does about him.
2. Not trying to diagnose his grandmother, whom I believe was not in actual attendance when he was born in Hawaii, but some older people have this disease called Alzheimer's and tend to remember facts incorrectly, if at all. Obama has a half brother that was born there, maybe she remembers that? Who knows? Stanley Obama had a baby in Hawaii and named him after his non-American father. There were nurses and doctors there that attended to him and remember Stanley having a baby, and his birth was announced in the paper shortly thereafter. All part of a left-wing conspiracy, I'll just bet, that started the day he was born.

Yes, you have to be really gullible to believe the crap that comes out of some of the right wing and Tea Partiers playbook, but people actually believe this stuff. Meanwhile, they love and promote them some Rafael "Ted" Cruz who was actually born in Canada to a Cuban father. It's priceless.

Well, well, just listen to the right winger defending an Obama. Note, however, this right winger is defending grandmother Obama because apparently, according to the poster, his grandmother said Barack was born in Africa. She has said repeatedly, and it is on tape where you can listen to it for yourself, that he was born in Hawaii. She met her grandson in 1988, I believe it was, when he went to visit his father's grave.

But way to defend an Obama, any Obama, right winger. I didn't think it was possible.

anything "civilized" in this country lately. European countries that have had healthcare for all for a long time now are much, much more civilized than America is.

All we know how to do is let the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, as well as sticking our nose in the business of other countries and then either bombing them to smithereens or setting up a phony government that we will "take out" at a later date.

We prefer to allow Chinese to fix and build bridges in this country while our own American citizens go for years without jobs, as well as sell our American companies to the Chinese (Smithfield comes to mind).

With our very huge resources in this country, there is no reason that even one American should go without healthcare, let alone millions of them.

I'm grateful to receive Medicare, and I just returned home today, after a five-day stay in the hospital.

I believe ALL citizens should have the ability to receive the same or similar care, but the republicans doesn't want good things for the poorest of us in this country. They only care about the richest, and I believe they should be very, VERY ashamed of themselves. I am certainly ashamed enough of them for all of us.

in this country. It begins with the government (federal, state, or local) putting out Notice of Bid. The lowest bid gets the job and the government's hands are tied. That's the law. Nothing you can do about it.

Corporations are a different story. They don't have to follow the bid law. They can pick and choose which company they want to do the work.

I won't comment on your last paragraph because it's just the usual talking points.

Sorry. LOL. That is not quite the way it works at the federal, state, or local level. In many instances the government awards the contract to the company that provides the best value, and this does not necessarily mean the company offering the lowest bid or price. Other factors such as technical capability, past performance, and quality are also considered.

The government's hands are not "tied" to always take the lowest bid.

Now I wonder, where do these people get this misinformation? Probably Fox News Entertainment. They say it, Rush Limbaugh repeats it, and people actually believe this crap and spew it back like it's the truth.

The government's hands are tied! The government's hands are so tied that the Bush Administration awarded $7 billion, that is "B" billion in no-bid Iraq contracts to Halliburton. The Bush Administration awarded $7 billion of taxpayers' money in no-bid contracts to Vice President Dick Cheney's firm so that the weapons of mass destruction that didn't exist there could not be eventually found.

How's that for hands tied?

the same disease, which is terminal.

Between 2006 and 2008, I finally got to the point where I had no choice but to lose my health insurance. I worked for a company I liked, and they paid half of my medical insurance premium if I achieved a goal of lines transcribed.

If I didn't make that goal, then I had to pay the entire premium by myself.

Back in 2006, my insurance premium was $701.00 per month, and with my frequent and repeated hospitalizations, I was not able to transcribe the goal amount.

So I called my supervisor and asked her if I could quit the insurance plan. She warned me very seriously that that wasn't in my best interests.

I did not qualify for Medicaid, so during the time I waited for my SSDI hearing, I had/have a very serious disease and not much contact with my physician.

Once the hearing finally came (in 2009) and I found out that the Judge upheld MY claim, I received Medicare almost immediately.

I would love to see every single person in this country covered by a healthcare plan. And while the Affordable Care Act keeps premiums at about 8% of monthly income, at the same time it will create more and more competition among the over-priced health insurance companies. God knows THAT'S been needed for a very long time.

Interesting how these words "everything" and "nothing" keep getting overused and misused and bandied about by the right wingers, as in "he lies about everything," and "he does nothing."

Allow me to show you the proper use of these two words in a sentence:

Let me start by saying that I agree with you about getting facts straight. After he was asked to leave, Miller sent out an e-mail letting employees know his "assignment was over" in June.

Yes, I guess the 56-year-old employee had planned to "retire" after having held his post as the acting head of the IRS for approximately 6 whole months.

What part of "resigned at the request of the President" do you not understand?

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., said the president set "exactly the right tone" by announcing Miller's firing.

"The immediate relieving of an acting commissioner who had made false statements and mislead Congress is an extremely good first step," he said. "The IRS is definitely an issue in which what happens wrong today can happen wrong tomorrow to a different group of Americans, so I think the president is going to find very willing partners on Capitol Hill. I think in this case we very much take him at his word that he wants to be open and transparent in fixing the system and putting new controls in place."

Comprehend much? - Seriously
[ In Reply To ..]
Are you serious? Do you have a problem with the idea that this guy was fired so you will distort the facts to make him a retiree at all costs? Why this need to make him a retiree? Is it so it will fit into your neat little narrative that "nothing" was done? I'm only going to say this one more time: The man was 56 years old, he was not a "retiree" and had no plans to leave his position at the IRS before the scandal hit.

The man held the position of Deputy Commissioner for Services and Enforcement and had worked at the IRS for a long time. I only said he was in the head position for a short time as the acting IRS commissioner. When his stint as the acting commissioner was over (as mandated by statute), he had every intention of staying in his regular position and would have continued to run the IRS from his deputy commissioner post.

Then the scandal hit. He was well aware of the scandal and all the crap storm that came with it, and only after the scandal hit and he was called onto the carpet by who knows who and how many officials, reporters, etc., he spoke with about the crap storm did he put out an e-mail where he alluded to the fact that his term as acting commissioner was soon to expire (this is mandated by statute).

"It is with regret that I will be departing from the IRS as my acting assignment ends in early June. This has been an incredibly difficult time for the IRS given the events of the past few days, and there is a strong and immediate need to restore public trust in the nation's tax agency. I believe the Service will benefit from having a new acting commissioner in place during this challenging period."

But Miller also suggested he would not be leaving the post right away. Of course, he was wrong. They wanted him out and told him. Why do you think he then wrote the e-mail? Of course, in his "I will be leaving over the IRS scandal" e-mail, he told the IRS employees that it would be later rather than sooner. Not to be, as he was asked to tender his resignation sooner by the powers in charge, a polite way of saying he was fired.

"As I wrap up my time at the IRS," he wrote, "I will be focused on an orderly transition."

Saying the guy was a retiree and had planned to leave anyway is just not what happened. The scandal broke and only ***then*** did Miller send out the e-mail where he was telling everyone that he was "departing" "given the events of the past few days." I can see why the right wing wants to say the guy was "leaving anyway," but that is just not the case.

He was fired. He had not planned to be a 56-year-old retiree.

Repeat: He was fired.

Saying Miller was a retiree is like saying Richard Nixon was a retiree because his second term was scheduled to end. Nixon did not retire 2-1/2 years early, he was impeached and he resigned, a not so polite way of saying he was fired.
I was NOT arguing over how he left. My point was - Truthhurts
[ In Reply To ..]
your insinuation that he was only there for 6 months which you pointed out in your first post. That was the point I was making.

So, I guess I could say the same to you: "Comprehend much?"

Miller has served most of his 25 years at the IRS, an agency in the Treasury Department, in its Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division (TE/GE). Starting as special assistant to the assistant commissioner for Employee Plans and Exempt Organizations, Miller rose to acting assistant commissioner, then director of Exempt Organizations from 1999 to 2004, capping his TE/GE service as commissioner of TE/GE from 2004 to April 2009. From April to September 2009, Miller served as commissioner of the Large Business and Mid-Size Business Division, leaving that post when he was named deputy commissioner for Services and Enforcement

Miller became acting IRS commissioner on November 9, 2012, the day after Barack Obama was elected to a second term when Doug Shulman stepped down saying he did not want a second five-year term. Miller submitted his resignation on May 15, 2013, in the wake of the 2013 IRS scandal in which the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration released an audit report confirming that the IRS used inappropriate criteria to identify potential political cases, including organizations with Tea Party in their names for closer scrutiny on 501(c)(4) applications.

...and we now know WHY Doug Shulman didn't want a second 5-year term, don't we?
Bait and Switch - Sounds Familiar
[ In Reply To ..]
What I said was: "Yes, I guess the 56-year-old employee had planned to 'retire' after having held his post as the acting head of the IRS for approximately 6 whole months."

Meaning: Who would take the top job and then retire by choice so soon? What part of that statement is insinuating that he only worked at the IRS for 6 months? Actually none. I was actually assuming people on the political board knew who Miller was. People in government that rise to the head of their agencies have usually spent some time there instead of being just plucked out of nowhere and plopped into the head spot. The fact that Miller was a career employee at the IRS is further proof that he had no intentions of moving to the top of the career track he was on and then just retiring by choice. Which is exactly what my point was.

If someone wants to take someone's words and twist them around and accuse them of insinuating something they did not say, that is their prerogative.

It's the same old bait and switch that I believe the right wingers excel at. Taken from a page right out of the right wing playbook, IMO.

They say Miller was retiring. You state the facts of his firing. They say they never disputed it. Facts are facts. So the truth does hurt. Bait and switch, never said it, change the subject.

You're only kidding yourself. We get it.

It is that right wing ability to ignore all semblance of the truth that gives them away and that right wing seemingly genetic defect that causes them to ignore or twist facts or refuse to entertain anyone or anything that might burst the little bubbles that they live in.
Long Before? - He Retired Long Before?
[ In Reply To ..]
Long Before? What was that you said about facts?

How could he factually have been "scheduled for retirement" long before when he had only taken the position on 11/10/2012 approximately 6 months before the scandal? He must have submitted his resignation before he even took the job. Neat trick retiring before you start working.

The facts are that Miller sent out an e-mail announcing to his staff letting them know that his assignment would be over in June, but that was only after he was asked to leave and the crap had hit the proverbial fan.

His early retirement was not his idea. He probably didn't even have all his stuff unpacked from when he moved in.

Tarnishing Obama is the only way that the Republican right and Tea Party extreme right wingers can emerge from these eight years not completely humiliated by Barack Obama.

Remember the most recent Republican convention? George Bush, he who must not be named.

Compare Obama's competency to the complete and utter abject failure that was the Bush administration, and you'll understand why the right wingers just keep whining and complaining and feigning outrage about him. They've got to criticize Obama as much as possible to make their own failure look appealing.

Of course, their fake scandals and fake outrage only works with people who want to believe the crap, which thankfully is a small, and getting smaller, minority of the country (about 25%, I'd venture to guess). And still the cries of the minority keep getting louder and louder (because their numbers are less and less), and you have to suspend all belief of any truth in order to believe some of the craziness they actually dish out day after day after day.

The IRS was targeting ALL supposed 501 IRC (c)(4)'s, not just the conservative ones.

Issa's "gut feeling" was something would be linked back to Washington, and it NEVER was. Then he refused to release the transcripts from the hearings because it made him look like a fool. Even his own party criticized him. Cummings ultimately released the transcripts. Easily searchable.

The final conclusion of all this should be that no organization operating under the guise of being a Social Welfare Organization, thus allowing anonymous donors, should be able to operate any kind of political crusade for any party. The wording of the law needs to be changed. Then IRS lines would be drawn simply, black and white, no gray.

The President made a generic--if something was done illegally or unethically, we'll deal after an investigation--statement. Investigation done. See above.

The IRS investigated both Democratic and republican organizations who were masquerading as "social welfare" programs, and they investigated everyone.

The republicans just like to whine and make up fiction about the President, and there are a number of silly people who believe it.

Why can't the republicans just concentrate on jobs, jobs, jobs for the unemployed and/or underemployed in this country? Why are they so against raising the minimum wage to an actual "living wage"? Why are they so against ANYTHING that would benefit the most needy among us and then go on to claim they are such wonderful "Christians" after spouting all that hatred from their mouths?

I truly have faith in our younger generation, who seem to be less racist than their older counterparts, and perhaps one day in this country it will be considered a crime to just shoot someone down dead because they feel like it.

As for minimum wage...I don't know many jobs that pay that. Fast food and maybe farm workers, but most jobs pay more than that. Those jobs are just a step to climb for better jobs.

Minimum wage is just a "suggestion" and the law. Even in my rural area, changing tires pays $12 an hour.

Raising the minimum wage will raise the cost of goods. Those that are having trouble buying groceries and/or durable goods will have to pay a lot more. I need a new fridge. Mine is ready to give out but who can afford the $900 for a basic model now? Raising wages will add at least another $200 to that appliance.

Don't forget, a lot of companies also offer benefits: paid vacations, sick time, family leave time, maternity time, 401ks/profit sharing plans, and healthcare. That adds up to a lot of extras. No company has to offer that with the exception of the family leave and maternity.

Raising the minimum wage will raise the cost of goods? Not necessarily, I think.

Remember all those stimulus checks that were sent out and all those companies falling all over themselves to lower their prices to get their share? And what happens around income tax refund time and Christmas time? When people have more money they are willing to spend and companies know it, they are not necessarily going to raise prices. A lot of them start competing for "new money" in circulation.

I certainly don't think giving the food service and farm workers in America a raise to $9 an hour is going to raise the cost of a refrigerator by $200, particularly when that refrigerator is more than likely largely or completely manufactured and/or assembled in China for slave wages. Maybe if they lowered the minimum wage, then companies would lower their prices since they could pay their employees less, and then you could afford that $900 basic refrigerator unit because the cost would be lowered by $200 to $700 (sarcasm). Of course they wouldn't lower the prices, they'd just pocket the profits, and people with the new lowered minimum wage would then have less money to spend on their products, and they'd likely sell a lot fewer units and actually be forced to raise prices to maintain their profits. If people have less money, then they naturally spend less money, companies sell less products/services. Lowering wages doesn't necessarily (and usually never) will cause prices to fall, and raising wages doesn't necessarily cause them to rise. Supply and demand always figures in there. More of a demand (people with more money) means a company can sell more units at a smaller profit and more companies competing for those dollars. Economy 101.

Now, do I believe companies that pay minimum wage in America might ship more jobs to China to keep costs down to avoid paying higher wages and that some of the big MTSOs would ship more work overseas to avoid paying higher wages to their US employees? For sure. They're already doing it with the minimum wage at $7.25. It's not so much about cost, I think, but more about hoarding profits and paying CEOs' salaries in the range of $10,000 per hour (not a typo). IMO, it's less about paying a fair wage for employees' work and more about corporate greed.

You are talking a totally different argument on raising prices. You're talking about items going on sale...happens when the new models come out and at different times of the year like you mentioned.

But, I'm talking about raising prices to cover doubling minimum wage. Fast food restaurants will have to raise their prices (franchise owners can't absorb the costs of the food they need to buy, containers, other products to run the FFR, plus pay the royalties, franchise fees and other costs to the head honcho organization, small farmers will have to raise their prices while big businesses like Con-Agra would definitely welcome the raise in prices even though they'll argue for lower prices from the small farmers (if there will be such a thing anymore).

Like I said before, those places are only a stepping point for jobs. Not too many kids stay there after graduating high school and/or college.
But A 20% Price Hike You Think? - Seriously

Nowhere in your post do you mention a $15 an hour more than doubling of the minimum wage. If that is what you're concerned about, you need not give it a second thought. No serious politician is requesting to double the minimum wage plus 50 cents tacked on for good measure. The POTUS has stated he would like to raise the minimum wage to $9.00.

Economy 101. I'm not just talking about sales, I'm talking about market factors that raise and lower prices. My wages have seriously fallen, but prices have not fallen. Companies are pocketing the profits. Lower wages have not caused lower prices. There are lots of reasons that prices rise and fall, and the raising wages of employees does not necessarily make prices go up. My point is that there are many more factors involved, and you can't assume a wage hike would raise prices in the same manner that you can't assume a wage lowering will lower prices.

You have given an analogy there whereby a refrigerator increases in price by over 20% so that a small minority of the country can get a minimum wage hike. I'm just thinking that's not realistic. I can't envision a company like Kenmore announcing a 20+ percentage hike in the price of their refrigerators because the farm workers and restaurant employees got a raise to pull them above poverty level in America. Do I think it would cause them to want cheaper labor and move more jobs overseas? Yes. Do I think it would cause massive price hikes? Not necessarily.

Anyway, I do think a minimum raise hike would be a good thing. So many companies have lowered away at the wages of their employees, and I don't see prices falling, just the opposite, I see corporate profits going up and Wall Street hitting new highs. Profits are up, wages go lower, and companies are pocketing the profit.

That's just what I see.

Do you think it's fair for someone to earn $7.25 an hour?

How many apartments would that person be available to rent?

Or how many utilities can one pay on a minimum wage job?

Are people entitled to a job that pays enough so the people can actually EAT?

Please tell me how much you would expect a single, US American citizen (AND his/her child/rent/clothes/food) to earn an hour?

You speak of 'ultimate goals' - just saying

Speaking of goals, think about how many/most politicians GET in powerful offices in the first place.

In the vast majority of races, it
It takes *real* connections, real money. Think about who is PAYING for these campaigns, whether on the right or the left. THEY ALL have an agenda. Then factor in the 'agenda of the ordinary person' - because politicians have to concern themselves with that as well IF they want to be reelected.

I am just trying to point out that a significant motivation behind the 'deadlock' in Washington DC are politicians working VERY VERY hard to keep their jobs - and that means satisfying those who PAID for them to run for office, whether its corporate $$ or individual $$.

So when you see filibusters or other games trying to stop progress, think about their AGENDA. Repubs are virtually always trying to protect mega corporation$$$ as well as the extreme right wing faction of the party. Democrats SAY they are for the people more than corporations but they didn't get to DC poor, riding on a donkey. They ride a very similar gravy train into town... Imho they are not as bad as the repubs, but that alone will not make them heroes.

I don't see an easy answer - after all our whole system is driven by capitalism... so until or unless Americans can be UNbrainwashed of this system, it is like to fester. I don't think it is sustainable myself ;)

With their terrible concern with ISIS and the handling of terrorist activities, they will risk the shut down of DHS? This just doesn't make sense.
