Angelfood shut down

Posted: Oct 16, 2011

Since Angelfood Ministries got shut down I don't know what to do.  I support myself, my family, my elderly mom and it was a blessing having Angelfood boxes to count on.  Does anyone know any other similar ministry program for us struggling to feed a full house?  Does anyone know why it closed down?  Or is it just another sign of our ever faltering economy?  I'm stressing here!  ( or does anyone have a recipe for hotdog or bologna casseroles or soup?! lol!!)

After I read your post, I did a Google search and read that their shutdown may have something to do with an ongoing FBI probe into the two pasters who started AFM. I'm sure we will hear more in the near future.

If you live in some states, there is another food subsidy program. Example, do a search for food subsidy network (your state). Florida has one called SHARE Florida Food Network.

I stopped using AFM about a year ago when they went up on their prices. I found that by using coupons, I could get exactly the same box contents as AFM for a little less. I had to do some bulk buying, though, to get the prices low. So yeah, I am now a stock piler, but nothing like on Extreme Couponing. I have enough of most things to last 6 months except for perishables and seasonable items.

If you can store quantities of food, a good source for low-cost meat is Zaycon. They take orders and then deliver to a location (hopefully near you), a lot like AFM, but they are a private company. I just ordered a 40-lb box of boneless skinless chicken breasts for $1.49 a pound. I will split the order with my sister. I have gotten good prices on this type of chicken, but never this low.

Also, sign up for those daily deal sites like LivingSocial because sometimes they offer discount certificates for organic produce. In April I bought a certificate for $17 and at the end of this month I will receive $50 in fresh organic produce.

See if your local dollar stores sell the weekly newspaper for a discount. My local Dollar Tree sells the Sunday paper for $1 whereas the newstand price is $2, so I can 2 papers for twice the number of coupons. I usually do the weekly meal deal at Winn-Dixie and save a lot of money with that and I love WD's BOGO meat prices.

I have cut my monthly grocery bill by 50% since I started couponing (although I don't have the huge savings like the show) since my stockpile is fairly self-sustaining now. You can do it, too.

Guess it's a good thing ... Sm - Old Woman

that our church decided not to go with Angel Food Ministries. I had hoped it would be a good way to help the elderly and low-income people in our area.

Another place to check would be church food banks. Most towns of any size usually have at least one church that has a food bank. You might not be able to get all your food there, but they are usually a good resource for staples and canned goods.

Salvation Army has food banks for those with low income.
problem with food banks these days is - bad all over

that so many people have a need for them and they aren't able to provide for everyone. Many food banks run bare because of lack of support and overwhelming demand.

I knew they were in the news months ago for tax problems but I wonder why they shut down now?

I don't know where you live but in Knoxville there are a lot of food pantries. I also buy things from the DOLLAR TREE, DOLLAR GENERAL, or salvage grocery before I shop the big stores. The DOLLAR TREE has boxed of mac and cheese with the actual cheese for $1 and that saves on milk, butter, etc. Unfortunately my children don't eat really healthy because all I can afford is junk but if I give them small portions and canned veggies I don't feel half as bad.

I've been watching that extreme couponers show on TLC. - Noney

I was wondering if any "regular" couponers are having any success at it. Some of the people on the show are buying $1000 worth of groceries and paying less than $100 after coupons which sounds great, but who wants 40 boxes of cereal all at once?

I would just love to buy $200 in groceries and pay less than $100 after coupons. And I mean regular groceries, not just 10 jars of peanut butter, 20 boxes of cereal, etc. just because I get a good coupon deal. You know what I mean?

If I spend the time to really do it, I can save - at least 50% on my groceries, but

it usually involved driving to multiple stores and a lot of time organizing, so I do it for awhile, but then I get lazy and stop. I never buy stuff that I won't use, even if I can end up "making" money on it at the drug stores with coupons and store dollars. It really does take a lot of dedication and time, though, so I find that unless we are really hurting for money, I usually get lazy and don't coupon as aggressively as I could.

here was my last week totals - stuttering

I spent $85 for $205 in grocery (this is not a complete list but almost):
1 gallon milk
8 boxes of popcorn (I use these as Christmas gifts with a special flavored sugar I make from scratch so my holiday list just got cut in half)
2 boxes of crackers
2 packs paper plates
4 boxes Zatarin rice
2 boxes brownies
2 packages 4-pack applesauce
1 roll paper towels
2 frozen lasagna
lots of dog food to last 3 weeks
2 Diet Pepsi 1 liter
2 Windex spray
8 cans Campbell soup
2 Canadian Bacon

I also got candy for Halloween and toothbrush/rinse items, but you can see I don't clear the cereal shelves and such. When the cereal is on sale, I usualy buy 6 boxes, but it has to be less than $1 a box. Last week I stocked up on cheese and yogurt (I won't pay more than 50 cents each for the multi packs of yogurt), chicken and my regular grocery run for produce.

I average $60 a week, which isn't extreme, but it is half of what I was spending before. The difference is that I have a selection of food that I can meal plan with even though I spent half as much. I usually do have one large run a month like this one was, and the rest of the time I spend about $25 each trip. I only buy into the drug store deals a few weeks every 6 months or so. The rest of the time I go to 2 neighborhood groceries. Before I was couponing, my money was going to the stores and there was nothing left in my cupboard to show for it. I have not met anyone who can do better than $200 for less than $50 in a single trip.

I'm sorry to hear that - Hope this helps - link inside

I came across this website a long time ago. I thought the lady said she feeds a family of 4 or 6 on something like 100 bucks a month (something like that). Looks like it has a lot of frugal things and recipes, so I hope it helps.

Are Republicans Really Going To Shut DownFeb 23, 2015
With their terrible concern with ISIS and the handling of terrorist activities, they will risk the shut down of DHS? This just doesn't make sense. Republicans are willing to risk the security of the U.S. homeland to make a political point on immigration. Once again, the Republican party is divided on their own approach. "If the agency is shut down, about 15 percent of its 230,000 employees — roughly 30,000 — would be furloughed. The rest, deemed essential, would be expecte ...

I'm tired of the obstruction. People are warning him this is going to harm the GOP, and they're right. It's hard enough to get anything done in goverment--and they call Democrats the mule? All I see is the GOP digging their feet in and refusing to cooperate. Normally I'd be all for the GOP making stupid decisions and guarenteeing a Dem win in 2016, but I'm tired of our politicians acting like children.  Instead of building a better country, we have senators declar ...

Obama Should Keep His Arrogant Trap Shut.Mar 08, 2010
There's really just one conclusion to be reached, which is that the majority of Americans are coming to fear and hate Obama. He's shed independent voters at a rate never seen before since tracking began. When Obama opened his big yap about healthcare, his rating was crappy at -12 (Rasmussen). Since then, it's dropped even further to -19. Now, I don't know if you realize it or not, but that puts Obama right smack dab in the middle of Bush territory when the financial cri ...
