Ted Cruz could at least be embarrassed

Posted: May 27, 2015

In January of 2013, before he became infamous for modernizing McCarthyism in the Senate halls, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) claimed he couldn’t support aid for Sandy victims because of the “pork” and “wasteful spending” in the Disaster Relief Act of 2013. Read the freshman Senator’s explanation for refusing aid to Sandy victims: WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) made the following statement on the Disaster Relief Act of 2013: Hurricane Sandy inflicted devastating damage on the East Coast, and Congress appropriately responded with hurricane relief. Unfortunately, cynical politicians in Washington could not resist loading up this relief bill with billions in new spending utterly unrelated to Sandy. Emergency relief for the families who are suffering from this natural disaster should not be used as a Christmas tree for billions in unrelated spending, including projects such as Smithsonian repairs, upgrades to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration airplanes, and more funding for Head Start. Two thirds of this spending is not remotely “emergency”; the Congressional Budget Office estimates that only 30% of the authorized funds would be spent in the next 20 months, and over a billion dollars will be spent as late as 2021. This bill is symptomatic of a larger problem in Washington – an addiction to spending money we do not have. The United States Senate should not be in the business of exploiting victims of natural disasters to fund pork projects that further expand our debt. While it’s true that lawmakers like to use/abuse the freedom granted by “emergency funding”, it’s also ironic that, according to PolitiFact, “A big portion of the $17 billion in “immediate” assistance, more than $5 billion, went to replenish FEMA’s disaster relief fund, which may fund relief from future disasters.” PolitiFact also disagrees with some of the math Cruz repeated, “On Jan. 28, it passed H.R. 152, a separate $50.5 billion package. Of that $50.5 billion, $17 billion went toward immediate Sandy aid, while $33.5 billion was for “near- and long-term assistance and mitigation,” according to a Congressional Quarterly analysis.” Furthermore, Rick Ungar, writing at Forbes, pointed out that the “pork” came from having to bribe red state Republicans — including Texas — in order to get the package passed over their filibuster, “However, as it turns out, the pork portions of the Senate bill were not earmarked to benefit Democratic members of the upper chamber of Congress… The answer can be found in a quick review of the states that are set to benefit from the Senate’s extra-special benevolence—states including Alabama, Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana.” The stunning hypocrisy doesn’t end there. It probably would have been helpful if Senator Cruz were familiar with where his own state fell on the FEMA hand out chart. See, Cruz represents the state with the most FEMA-declared disasters since the start of 2009, according to an iWatch News analysis. “The top two states, Texas and Oklahoma, combined for more than a quarter of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s declared disasters since Jan. 1, 2009.” Here they are in order: Texas, 75 Oklahoma, 45 California, 24 New Mexico, 13 Arizona, 12 Tennessee, 12 New York, 11 Kansas, 10 Nebraska, 10 http://www.politicususa.com/2013/04/19/flashback-ted-cruz-lecture-sandy-victims-texas-begs-handouts-feds.html ;

If any good can come from such a horrible situation, I just pray that lessons may be learned about not taking such a hard line on certain government programs at least?

My fear is, however, that certain people are breaking their own "principles" just to ensure their own survival, but will go right back to those hard lines once they've accepted federal help, finding 12 different reasons why their situation was different than the others, so it was okay in their own circumstances. (Which actually then means that perhaps its those "principles" themselves which need to be re-examined.)

Because this would actually be the second time Ted Cruz has gone back on his "principles" when in a situation himself. Consider the statement made that he would go on Obamacare after his wife left Goldman-Sachs because he was "following the law?" (Despite the fact that he did have other options of COBRA or paying straight out of pocking for private insurance at a higher rate or co-op insurance).

I'll keep hoping that if anything good can come from such a disaster - and though Ted Cruz has occasionally made a decent point - it will be that Ted Cruz, Abbott and others finally get it; that the people that want SOME government regulation and assistance are not their enemy and that we're all in this thing called the UNITED States together, but a divided house against itself cannot stand, and that I, for one, do NOT appreciate their attempts to polarize and chip away at this country's diversified unity.

But having said that, though it's not the easiest thing I've ever said and done, in the end, I am still happy that my tax dollars are going to help you, Texas - but would it kill ya to remember it this time and pay it forward? ;)

We have a bad habit on this forum of finding an article - we "like" and running with it.

This entire section is utterly irrelevant:

The stunning hypocrisy doesn’t end there. It probably would have been helpful if Senator Cruz were familiar with where his own state fell on the FEMA hand out chart. Here they are in order:

Texas, 75
Oklahoma, 45
California, 24
New Mexico, 13
Arizona, 12
Tennessee, 12
New York, 11
Kansas, 10
Nebraska, 10

Can you tell why?

Texas and Oklahoma are in twister zones and Texas is a lot - larger than the other states. That

So here's the story.  I left MT and now work in a rural hospital.  I really enjoy my job and find most of my responsibilities immensely satisfying.  My co-workers are a great bunch of people, and my manager is cool.  Surprisingly, my MT knowledge comes into play every day!  Overall, the transition from the isolation of MT to pretty intense interaction with both patients and staff has been amazing...except... didn't expect any justice from the Dept of Justice, did you?  Eric refuses to appoint a special investigator to look into the IRS targeting conservative groups.  No signs of impropriety.  Not a smidgen of impropriety, one could say.  Doesn't matter that the head witness pleaded the Fifth twice and the "investigator" appointed to the case was a huge donor to Obama.  If that's not impropriety, Ric, I don't know what is, but I guess there's nothing ...

I'm tired of the obstruction. People are warning him this is going to harm the GOP, and they're right. It's hard enough to get anything done in goverment--and they call Democrats the mule? Just heard on news that Cruz was Boehner's lawyer yet Cruz says he doesn't really know Boehner   "Boehner referred to the arrangement in a January 23rd, 2014 appearance on Leno. It seems overwhelmingly likely that, given the fact that Ted Cruz worked as John Boehner’s lawyer, he has “worked” with him, and almost certainly does “know” him.
