it's shabby treatment of workers both at home and even more so abroad. They may have stepped in more poop than they know how to handle when taking this turn toward making political statements in the aftermath of an election where they failed to get their way.

For starters, for every worker covered by their health plan that will be deciding between feeding themselves and their kids and securing their health care each time their puny paychecks are issued, who now have become targets for premium "cost cutter specials" will result in a big fat free rider fine under ACA policy beginning in 2014, one I'm sure they have calculated they can afford. Then there's the strikes and walkouts just in time for the holiday season that will undoubtedly affect their bottom line profits, not to mention the role boycotting consumer backlash will play. One strategy workers might consider is cancelling their policies temporarily, then signing up during enrollment periods at the end of next year to swell the numbers of policies WalMart will be paying fines on. Of no small consolation is that most of them will be eligible for means-tested coverage under Obamacare, which will translate into higher contributions to taxpayers footing that bill, including onlookers cheering from the stadium stands in support of WM's defiance.

Think I'll read up on other strategies union backers are entertaining. Maybe one of their wizards has a viable idea on how to drive the retail giant into bankruptcy. Meanwhile, I'm off to WM to pick up the few monthly purchases I still make there because of the catch-22 of needing discount prices on OTC meds and sparse grocery items that my own depleted household budget FORCES me to make. I will be taking the extra time needed to inspect each label to insure none of my items are coming out of overseas sweat shops, another factor that has pared down my WM consumption to next to nothing over the years.

Thanks for posting this interesting article. I think it's just the push I needed to cut the WalMart umbilical cord all together, starting with holiday shopping strategies and locating another stateside source of affordable OTCs.

Wal-Mart and Target basically pay the same; in fact, in some jobs Wal-Mart pays better. So the question is, why does everybody write about Wal-Mart but not Target? Or Amazon packers for that matter?

My guess it's the same at all of these stores but the people who criticize Wal-Mart shop at Target and Amazon and so it's an "inconvenient truth" that they choose to ignore.

I don't think that by pointing out Walmart anyone is excusing any company for their bad behavior. However, Walmart is the biggest offender of them all, all while raking in BILLIONS off the backs of their employees, overseas sweatshop labor, the communities where they set up shop, and the taxpayers. They set the standard, and due to their size, Walmart's impact is felt the most. This doesn't excuse any other corporation (or should I say person). If anything I hope that by shedding light on Walmart's bad behavior, consumers will become more active in researching who they do business with as well as the practices of the companies whose products they buy. Unfortunately, these "people" don't listen to our words, but their ears perk right up when we let our dollars speak for us.

taking their anger over the election outcome (and the implicit affirmation that Obamacare is here to stay, now that Romney is a has-been) out on their workers by deliberately cutting back on their previous contributions toward employee medical insurance coverage. Target and Amazon workers are not walking off their jobs in protest a little over a week before Thanksgiving out of desperation to bring attention to their plight.
