You mean to tell me you don't understand the usage of the word "free" when speaking of the "leader of the free world?" Newsflash for you: It's not used in the connotation of cost/benefit analyses. With Europe, it's as much a matter of perception as reality.

In any case, I'm fine with her comments regarding Europe-US relations. It's far past time for Europe to stand on its own two feet and wean itself from Lady Liberty's tit, where it's been sucking us dry ever since World War I.

She seems to imply that the US has become an unreliable partner. Welcome to the real nature of the relationship, Merkel. Europe has been an unreliable partner to the US since 1776, and before that. In this, Germany has exhibited signal "unreliability". You might remember those little fracases, WW I and WW II, Ms. Merkel - but those weren't the only examples. Consider the German mercenaries who fought against American forces during the Revolutionary war - i.e. the Hessians.

Perhaps the leader of Germany is not in the strongest position to speak about European-American relationships, much less to criticize.
