I am having upcoming surgery and do not want to use what little bit of sick time I have (because then I'm in a pickle if I get the flu or something). I inquired if I could use a few vacation days and then have a few off unpaid if needed (because I often use vacation days for necessary things rather than something pleasant). I was told I could either go the FMLA route and will have to eat up any sick time I have or have to use all vacation time, which will wipe mine out.
Do most employers deny workers short leaves without pay for things like surgery these days and make them use their time-off benefits?
