I'm having vein surgery and I'm

Posted: Aug 2, 2014

I'm hoping someone on this board will have had, or know someone who has had, vein ablation therapy, also called EVLT and EVLA.  It's done in the doctor's office under Versed twilight sedation and local numbing medicine in each incision on the leg.  I have chronic venous insufficiency, which has, over the past year, taken a toll on my life.  I have constant aching pain in both calves every waking moment.  The pain even wakes me in up from sleep.  Both ankles are swollen and red, and the skin extremely itchy and dry.

One of my friends had this procedure and said it was worse than childbirth!  But she didn't have ANY sedation or anesthesia!  Another friend has had it and says it wasn't that bad.  The goal is to get my circulation moving correctly again instead of blood pooling in my ankles.

Tonight I've been looking at forums on the internet, and there are some terrifying stories about the recovery period.  I know that I'll be wearing a thigh-high compression stocking on the leg for several weeks, and I'll need to get plenty of walking done every day, to prevent a blood clot.  According to the doctor, most people have no complaints.  Well, that's not what I'm reading online.

Can anyone out there ease my mind and give me some positive advice before I call and cancel the whole thing?  Thanks for your input.  Cry

Vein surgery- - sorry to see you are

distressed over your surgery. I have found most do not post on forums unless it is to complain about things. Most people want to describe the horrors of their experiences rather than the good, including surgery. You described constant pain which must be awful. Everyone is different, you may recuperate quickly if you follow your doctor's postop advice. Perhaps those complaining are not compliant patients. My thought would be constant pain versus postop pain. I hope you find the answer you want within yourself, and I wish you be best whichever you may choose.

Thank you - sm

I hadn't thought of it this way. You're right. Most people who post on forums are complaining and negative. I trust my doctor, as he has done thousands of this particular surgery. I guess he wouldn't be in business if his patients had such a bad recovery period. I'm going to go ahead with the surgery. You're right that I already have pain, and the goal of the surgery is to stop the pain. I appreciate your thoughts.

Good for you - Christine

I have posted on this board a few times about upcoming procedures, and people were so supportive. What I found is that it was much better than what I expected. I have a wonderful relationship with my physicians, and what they told me was always the case. I know, however, some recoveries can be more difficult. In any case, I wish you the very best. Do let us know how things go for you.

Scared to death - it's now 8/15/14 - how'd it go? - hope all is well. NM

How nice of you to ask! - sm

My goodness, you are so nice to check on me. :) It was easy-peasy. All that worrying for nothing. What a big baby I am. I did the same thing before my cataract surgeries. Got myself so worked up from reading horror stories on the internet that I almost cancelled 'em. LOL! I had just a little pain during the laser vein ablation, but the doctor shot a lot of Lidocaine into each incision the minute I said "ow." Even afterward there was very little pain, which ibuprofen took care of. I'm so glad I went ahead with it. My circulation will thank me. :)

My grandma had a saying -- Use it up, wear it out, make do, or do without. I picked up a book called Living More With Less.  It's full of tips and stories from Mennonites.  I've changed a few of my ways due to what I've read. I still have a loooooong way to go.  Right now I'm working on paring down my wardrobe.  If I got rid of the things I rarely wear, or never wear, or only wear because my favorite things are dirty, I'd have so much more room from n ...

Has Anyone Here Had Bariatric Surgery?Dec 10, 2009
I am just trying to get as much info as possible.  Looks right now like it will be a RNY in India (insurance does not cover it, cost including air fair and all medical costs around $8,000 compared to 25-30,000 in the USA.)  Has anyone here gone through it and how was the process?  Was it open or lap?  What was the recovery time?  How have you adapted to the dietary changes afterwards?   ...

Surgery/WorkMay 30, 2012
I am having upcoming surgery and do not want to use what little bit of sick time I have (because then I'm in a pickle if I get the flu or something).  I inquired if I could use a few vacation days and then have a few off unpaid if needed (because I often use vacation days for necessary things rather than something pleasant).  I was told I could either go the FMLA route and will have to eat up any sick time I have or have to use all vacation time, which will wipe mine out. Do most ...

Surgery For De Quervain's Dec 31, 2012
Did anyone have surgery for de Quervain's tenosynovitis?  I had one injection a year ago, which resolved the issue.  However, a few months later the condition returned worse than ever.   My surgeon said the procedure "usually" eliminates the problem, but scar tissue may form which would cause pain, and the need for an additional procedure.   ...

Rotator Cuff SurgeryMar 18, 2011
Has anyone out there had rotator cuff surgery? I am afraid that is what I am facing.  I am having an MRI in a few days and then probably talking to a surgeon.  It has gotten to the point that I can't handle the pain anymore when I "forget" and use that arm the wrong way.  How long did it take you to get back to working??  I can't afford to be out 6 weeks as I have no disability insurance and basically as an MT living from paycheck to paycheck.  I do have 2 wee ...

I've been a MT for about 30 yrs. I had to go on disability due to back pain, then had 2 back surgeries. Getting Second Opinion Recent Eye SurgeryMar 22, 2013
I decided to contact one of the managers where I had my cataract surgery about 4 weeks ago now as striving to see what other options might be open for me. Needless to say I do not have any desire to return to the original surgeon, not that he failed but with his flaring up about a perfectly innocent comment from me, will not trust him in going forward with any tweeking that might need to be done. I have an appointment to see the manager on Monday. I like to speak face to face with a person, not ...

Stressing About Surgery, Not For The UsualAug 07, 2013
So I went to the orthopedist in May, had xray of my shoulder. At that time it was popping quite a bit and hurting (hurting that is until I got to the office, but you know how that is). Bottom line, xray done, doctor studied for a minute (could see his scanning as he was directly outside the room pondering the radiograph). He said you can just watch and if it should become more painful then surgery. Ok so it got worse over these few months. Am trying to sit operation up, getting okay from PCP (to ...

I am on unemployment now and this would be the perfect time to do the surgery so I have time to heal. Doctor said come back in four months. Is it because I am getting free healthcare? It's a program here in Cleveland at Metrohealth Medical Center that just started this summer. Just wondering ...
