RUSH: They think that the only way they're (Obama supporters) gonna have a chance for anything is if somebody comes along and takes from somebody else and gives it to them. Santa Claus. And it's hard to beat Santa Claus.

Media's all in an uproar today, most offended about it. That usually means a nerve was struck.
the media is in an uproar because - Rush is ignorant

current administration who took the work requirement out of qualifying. Can't compete with the Santa Claus mentality.
it's appropriate for welfare and food stamp use to rise - in these economic times...
[ In Reply To ..]
what is not appropriate is willful entrenchment in sociological fratricide. I would again remind you and others that the red states receive the lion's share of entitlements.
Which red states would those be? - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
I live in CA, definitely not a red state, and entitlement is a way of life for many, many people. I would like to offer an example. I once had a neighbor who was on welfare, had 5 kids in a 1-bedroom apartment, boyfriends come and go. She told me she got pregnant in high school just so she could go on welfare, not have to work, get Section 8 housing assistance, food stamps, free cell phone, list goes on and on. But to make a point, young girls choose this as their life path. They just keep having more kids so they can stay on welfare. They have no plan or incentive to work, no reason to marry unless they can marry some guy who has a good job. Why should they? They have it made, while I work my @@@ off (I was working 2 jobs at the time just to pay the rent). Can you explain to me how this makes sense? Welfare as a career path? The children growing up to these mothers see this and the girls follow in their mother's footsteps, perpetuating this cycle.

What do you think the solution to this problem is? Or do you not see this as a problem? Presumably since this is an MT board, we are all or were employed as MTs. How does is make you feel that young girls are getting pregnant just to go on welfare and we are paying them to stay at home? My tax money goes to fund their cell phones, housing assistance, food stamps, oh and I forgot medicaid, for mother too, free medical care. I do not think the kids should suffer because of the parents' poor choices, but what about single mothers who work and put their kids in day care? They work their behinds off to provide for their families, while others just wait for their welfare check. That's not Santa Claus? Why else would they keep voting Democrat?
one post, two post, red post, blue post - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I feel like I slipped on a banana peel. It sounds like you want to talk about more than just "which red states would those be?" In any case, I posted a link in answer to that question.

As for the rest of the can of worms you open, I have no doubt that you have witnessed abuse of the system. We all have. I would like to believe that you realize this is not the norm. I don't think anyone (on the planet) is in favor of perpetuating the cycle of poverty into which so many are raised. And so I will dignify your rhetorical question with a response: Yes. I do see this as a problem.

What do I think the solution is? Education. Access to healthcare. I think we need to stop marginalizing groups of people. I think we have to repair the inner city. When we provide low-income people with low-quality education, low-quality healthcare, low-quality living conditions, we certainly cannot expect high-quality outcomes.

So, in answer to your final question: No. That's not Santa Claus. Santa is a lovely image for those of us who enjoy this kind of folklore. He represents warmth and kindness. He represents the reward for being a good and kind person. Santa doesn't hoodwink little boys and girls; he doesn't hurt their moms and dads. People do that.
Welfare, unemployment, food-stamp usage ballooned... - (see message)
[ In Reply To ..]
....likely because of our nearly unprecedented financial crisis so many people find themselves in--worst since the Great Depression, in case you haven't heard!! (sarcasm on that last part). Say what you will about Obama not "fixing" this horrible mess fast enough, but he didn't create it. A lot of Americans realize that fixing it in 4 years was an impossible task for ANY president.

BTW, there are plenty of MTs who have found themselves relying on food stamps, unemployment checks, and possibly even welfare lately. Shame on you if you think most of them WANT to take these "gifts" from "Santa Claus" rather than be working and earning a living like they've been accustomed to doing. If the gov't hadn't streamlined or made it easier to get this relief and people were literally starving because they were mired in red tape for weeks or months, some of you would probably have been up in arms about THAT (and no doubt blaming it all on a single man).

Have you ever met a young woman with lots of kids on welfare? Do you know how it feels to be working 2 jobs while this mother runs around, goes drinking and partying with her family on the weekends, living a seemingly care-free life. Waiting for her welfare, food stamps, cell phone. If I believed that people on welfare really wanted to work, to provide for themselves and their families, then I would be all for it. I know in these tough times, there are some people, as you say, even MTs on food stamps, welfare, etc, and I agree they need help and would never deny them. But when you see both sides, how do we stop the welfare-career people and still provide help to people in need?

you're talking about a bunch of 4 year olds as santa is a fairy tale....but then again, there are a lot of folks who believe in god, which in my opinion is also a fairy tale.

The problem with Rush saying it is that he has an unfounded superiority complex in which he thinks he's smarter than everyone else and doesn't give credit or credence to anyone who is beyond his realm of fantasy (that would include the fantasy of Obama "giving people stuff").

I took my SIL to get a new cell phone (she already had one she was paying for) - she started up a conversation with the lady at the cell store about how she was on disability, etc. and the sales clerk asked her, "Do you want to get an Obamaphone?" When my SIL laughed and asked what that was, the sales clerk said that was what the subsidized phones were called. This was the first time I had heard it (about a year ago), but since then, I've heard people at my kids' school, the grocery store, and around town call it that very same thing.

Anyone remember "Julia," the cradle-to-grave subject of the government's largesse?

[ In Reply To ..]
It doesn't matter who said it, the statement is true. When you have someone giving people things for free (i.e. the free phone gimmick) as a pay off to vote for them, nobody can compete with that. It's like parents who divorce and one parent gives their children toys so they will want to be with them while the other parent has to be the responsible one and say no if something is not in their best interest.

I don't listen to Rush, so usually never know what he is saying. I neither like or dislike him. Sometimes he says something that I agree with and other times he'll say things I don't agree with. I basically don't listen to him because I don't have time. I have to work all the time, so have very little free time (gee thanks Obama...not). In fact I don't have cable TV anymore, so I never hear what they are talking abut.

All in all Rush is a smart man that speaks his mind about issues. He just likes to say things in a fashion that gets people up in arms. I usually sit back and laugh. It is funny to watch the libs froth at the mouth like rabid dogs because of something Rush said.

But yes, his statement about Santa Clause is right on.

Some people do say they don't like Rush. I have an aunt and uncle who are "very" conservative (i.e. more conservative than me). They say they can't stand him. Lots of other conservatives do too, but the difference is we don't hate with a venom like liberals.

As for me, I neither like or dislike him. He's got a successful show. I agree/disagree with him maybe 50/50, but goodness I certainly don't hate anyone. Same with Michael Moore. I neither like or dislike him. I watched one of his documentaries one time for about 5 minutes. I just really had no feelings for or against it or him. I wish Mr. Limbaugh all the best and success and I also wish Mr. Moore all the best and success. That is what are country is about.
