Has anyone ever taken a homeopathic medicine for depression?

Posted: Apr 14, 2011

I've tried several of the traditional medications for depression - Prozac, Effexor, and Zoloft.  They work for a while, I had some side effects, but then they stopped working and the depression came back every time.  I've heard more cons than pros about St. John's Wort, so I'm not sure I want to go that route, but would like to hear from anyone else who has tried the homeopathic route and got good results (or bad, so I know what to stay away from!)

Thank you ;)

I have tried St. John's Wort and also 5-HTP both with no results. In fact the 5-HTP was just a couple of weeks ago. It made me really emotional (more than usual). I did very well on the Zoloft but had major weight gain with it so I stopped. Sure would be nice to find something without side effects to take the edge off.

Keep looking... - elljay

I'm not sure anyone with true depression a/o anxiety gets relief with herbs or supplements, at least not myself or any of the friends I have with similar experience. We have all tried the SJW and 5-HTP as well. Had to trial several anti-depressants before I found one w/o significant side-effects but it was worth getting to the right medication! Lexapro is what has done best for me but everyone is different and all meds only last a few years in my long term experience, then you need to try another. Find a helpful doc/therapist who will trial you on what they think is most effective for you....and hang in there! (:

St. John's Wart is NOT homeopathic. - EducatedMT

STW is just an herb. Homeopathic remedies are titrated formulas compounded by a homeopathic physician.

STW is not for everyone, but it does help millions. Side effects include photophobia.

For years I took an herbal formula called Happy Camper. It contains no SJW and is available at health food stores. It worked for me!!

SSRI (serotonin reuptake inhibitors) like Prozac are dangerous. Prozac and 2rd- and 3rd-generation Prozac-like drugs are made from FLUORIDE. They also PERMANENTLY ALTER neural pathways.

Take care.

Have you had any kind of side effects from Happy Camper? - Zville MT

I don't want to go back to taking the prozac, etc, but I've got to do something to get out of this hole. We have a really good health food store here in town, I just didn't want to go in there and blindly ask for something for depression, you know?

Be sure to check and see where the herb is metabolized. Millions have had, for instance, success in lowering their cholsterol with red rice yeast, but they found it's bad for the liver. The synthetic cholesterol-lowering meds are also bad for the liver, but at least they KNOW that and you have to have regular LFTs to make sure all is okay. Just because something is natural, doesn't mean it's okay. There is NO regulation on these herbs. At least with synthetics, they have done trials and know exactly what harm they may do and can specifically monitor you.

The problem with herbal supplements is that they just don't know a lot about them. All products have to filter through somewhere--the liver or the kidneys. The worst person to ask is the person selling them, of course. You need to somehow find out if there was INDEPENDENT research on the product.

Good luck!
Thank you, I appreciate that info ;) (nm) - Zville MT

nutritional, spiritual, situational, emotional, environmental, or a cognitive/behavioral tendency that is familial. Treatment should also be multifaceted. It doesn't help to take an herb (btw, there is a great deal of research on them; it's just that they are sold indiscriminately by store clerks), but they will not help you if you are not addressing all facets.

Homeopathic/home Remedies For Eczema?Aug 08, 2011
I have a few spots of eczema that have flared up and are itching and flaking like crazy.  Obivously can't afford a trip to the doctor.  Anyone here have any good old-fashioned home remedies to relieve the itch that actually work? I've heard everything from crushed aspirin dissolved in water and applied with cotton balls to milk-soaked cotton balls applied to the area but before trying any of these, thought I'd run it thru this forum first.  TIA! ...

For Those Of You Interested In Concierge Medicine, Mar 30, 2017
ObamaCare. Working directly with his patients and cutting out the insurance and government bureaucrats, lowers costs for the patients and increases the quality of care they receive. This shows how free market solutions can cut healthcare costs. This is the way out of the healthcare trap, and ironically it's being driven by doctors themselves who want to be doctors rather than insurance administrators. So-called "concierge medicine" is available in most areas and the number of doctors ...

Limbaugh Unwittingly Praises Socialized Medicine, AgainMar 10, 2010
By Stephen C. WebsterTuesday, March 9th, 2010 -- 10:38 pm Right-wing radio talker Rush Limbaugh must be confused. During a recent broadcast, he vowed to "go to Costa Rica" if President Obama is successful in passing his health reform legislation. Most assumed he meant the statement in the vein of his promise to leave New York City over its tax rates, which he did. Now Limbaugh is saying he will not leave the U.S., as in, move away. Instead, Limbaugh claims that he will simply "go to Costa Rica ...

Ronald Reagan Speaks Out Against Socialized MedicineJul 30, 2013
Happy 48th birthday to Medicare.  Ronald Reagan and the right wing tried to kill Medicare before it was signed, sealed, and delivered on July 30, 1965, by calling it socialized medicine and the end of America as we know it. Quoting Reagan: “[I]f you don’t [stop Medicare] and I don’t do it, one of these days you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it once was like in America when men were free.” Quoti ...

By Stephen C. Court Documents Reveal Palin's Grandson Uses Socialized Medicine.Feb 23, 2010
By Stephen C. WebsterMonday, February 22nd, 2010 -- 9:47 pm For someone who once generated a national hysteria by claiming socialized medicine would bring about government-run "death panels" that would kill the elderly and children with mental defects, Sarah Palin seems remarkably calm, what with her grandson now facing the very same allegedly tyrannical construct, that is. Yes, that's right: Sarah Palin, Alaska's former governor and a millionaire thanks to sales of her book, has a g ...

Depression, What To Do?Sep 22, 2011

Depression Is NotMay 20, 2016
I remember at the worst of my depression, people would say, even church goers that I was feeling sorry for myself. Then I would get the you are not a victim. I beg to differ about the victim. At any rate, I got mad when people would say that I was feeling sorry for myself and I stopped going to church if the pastor would say that in a sermon. That is one of the worst things anyone can say to someone. It is not guilt I felt as much as anger that my own Christian brothers and sisters in Chri ...

Depression, Etc.Jan 18, 2015
If I am not mistaken there were those in the Bible who suffered from depression and they followed God. Now my opinion is that it does not help anyone to say to them that they are having a pity party. That person is trying to explain how they got to feeling as they do. Others can depress you with their actions albeit deliberately or whatever. To criticize anyone going through a hard time by saying this turns me off. I have heard preachers on TV start talking about pity parties. Okay, lastl ...

Depression In SeniorsOct 19, 2009
My boyfriend's parents are quite elderly and mother is slightly demented but alert and oriented most of the time. They sleep until 11 or 12 noon daily and go to bed around 10 p.m. The rest of the time they drive to McDonald's for 2 meals a day and otherwise sit in chairs staring at the TV (which is turned all the way up, rest of the house dark). The father is cranky and argumentative, increasingly so. The family calls them "happy as clams." I see depression -- they would appear to have ...

TOLD YA! We're In A DEPRESSIONAug 24, 2010
This has been obvious for MONTHS, but now finally the "dirty word" has been uttered in mainstream media. (I and a few others have been posting it this board for weeks.)  We are in a DEPRESSION, not a RECESSION. Depression And The LordJan 10, 2015
I have a question. A deeply religious person told me once that people who have depression, have it because they haven't found the Lord. Explain, please. In other words, they found the Lord, but still have depression. So, that doesn't make sense to me. No Bible quotes, please. ...
