Depression and Menopause

Posted: May 25, 2010

Has anyone noticed their depression becoming worse when going through menopause?  I am currently going through a major depressive episode and was reading something the other day about postmenopausal depression.  I have been going through menopause and was just curious about this.  TIA!

if one uses topical (rub it into your skin) progesterone cream. Do not use any estrogen, since during menopause estrogen production is diminished, but is still produced by the ovaries, whereas progesterone production (called the "happy" hormone) goes down to Zero. Therefore, adding progesterone will balance out the hormones and you will not have a hormone imbalance, what causes all these negative symptoms.

Ask your doctor about it, but it is available OTC.
Do NOT start with antidepressants, this will really mess you up!

Progesterone OTC cream - what kind and where can I buy it?

I researched and one article said, and I quote, "for appropriate dosing, must contain at least 500 mg USP natural progesterone per one ounce of cream base (not yam cream)." Where do I go to find such a cream? Health food store? Walmart? Grocery? Thanks!

I chose to go on estrogen to help alleviate some of the symptoms of menopause (my biggest problem was hot flashes), but I didn't taper down properly and had a serious emotional meltdown. So, with the doctor's help, I titrated back up a bit on the estrogen, then slowly weaned off, and I'm fine now. Still get the flashes sometimes.

I also agree about the antidepressants--better off without them, unless your suicidal or want to harm yourself. All it really does is delay the inevitable, and when you go off them (especially if you stop abruptly), emotional meltdown can be serious.

Going Through Menopause - When Will I Ever Get Through It?Dec 09, 2009
I am forgetful.  I am fatigued.  My perception is off.  When asked a question sometimes I know in my mind what to say, but then the wrong answer comes out my mouth, i.e. "is the elevator going up or down"  I would say going down, but in my mind I knew it was going up and that is what I thought I was saying until it comes out of my mouth as opposite. ...

How Do You Know If You Are Going Into Menopause?Jan 02, 2011
I'm 46 and I think it's too early for full menopause, but can you start going into premenopause much sooner?  What's the average age for that?  The reason I ask is that for the past year, I've been having some weird symptoms and am just now wondering if it has anything to do with hormones/menopause symptoms;  the worst of which was an episode where I woke up with the room spinning around me.  It was terrifying.  Then right afterwards I got really nau ...

Anyone Else Ever Have, After Menopause,Mar 25, 2017
I swear, about every 3-4 weeks or so, that's what it feels like.  In the exact same location, feels the same way, and I haven't had a period in almost a year but these cramps seem to come on regularly.    All original parts intact, nothing removed.  What a pain, no pun intended. ...

Symptoms Of MenopauseJan 12, 2011
I guess it's time... Menopause is knock knock knocking on my door.  I cannot believe the symptoms that come along with this!  Hot flashes are bad enough, but dry skin, I don't heal like I used to and now a little cut or scrape will be a dark scar, unpredicable periods, dry mouth, fatigue and mood swings! Forgetfulness, can't concentrate...  The worst has got to be the fatigue.  I can't wake up in the mornings, but I can't fall to sleep at night!& ...

Menopause QuestionOct 05, 2015
I'd appreciate any insight: I have recently developed pain in my nither region. I thought yeast infection, got an OTC treatment with no relief. Made an appointment with my doc, but got a clean bill of health. The pain persists, doc ordered tests, ultrasound, all normal. He thinks dryness or perhaps the beginning of atrophy, said we could try hormones but I haven't decided on that.  Has anyone ever had this?  It's not excruciating, but it does hurt, like I got a hefty kic ...

though they are erratic, usually about 3 months apart at this point.  I feel like I am losing my mind....had an episode of vertigo a few weeks ago followed by extreme anxiety and nausea, wound up in the ER (and if you knew me you'd know I wouldn't even think of going unless I thought I were dying)....they found nothing wrong, sent me home on meclizine, which does nothing.  I still have this weird anxious/dizzy feeling that usually builds up over the day, getting worse until I ...

Menopause And Weight GainFeb 13, 2011
I found out about a year ago that I'm in full-blown menopause.  I have all the characteristic issues that go along with it.  All of my life I've had to watch what I eat and try to exercise regularly (but that isn't going nearly as well as it should be right now).  Some days I just have no motivation whatsoever.  My tighter and tighter fitting clothes should be motivation enough, but apparently it isn't.  I'm so tired of this weight gain and feeli ...

I have been transcribing for 32 years now, am 54 years old.  I started menopause 1-1/2 years ago (so I guess since they say you have to have missed a period for 1-full year that I am officially menopausal).  My world seems topsy turvy.  Is there light at the end of the tunnel.   I have tried working a second job for the past year off and on, but it has been too difficult to concentrate.  After 10 years of working from home, because of the slump in production decided ...

How Long Is This Menopause Thing Gonna Last?Nov 22, 2010
My LMP was almost 3 yrs ago.  Not too many hot flashes, about 3 a day, but the ones at night wake me up, so I don't get good sleep.  I'm 46 now, menarche at 10.  Saw an ob/gyn 3 ysa and said my LH and FSH were too low to be having any more periods.  Any info, this is just the pits.  Mood swings, swelling, weight gain, you know the gory details.  Tried soy pills and tofu/soy products, but made the hot flashes worse and will not use hormones.   I ...

Menopause Question With Explicit Personal TMI.Mar 12, 2015
Explicit personal anatomical information below -  do not read if offended or prudish.       Wondering if anyone else has had similar symptoms and how did you resolve them. I think I may have started menopause and have done some research on my symptoms.  Seems like dry tissues and URI are a symptom, of which I have had both.  Very rarely do I get URIs, but after this one was resolved  (I hope), seems like i have somewhat dry but itchy and somewhat achy ...

Any Suggestions For Natural Supplements For Menopause Symptoms?Nov 11, 2015
I'm 48 and started having weird periods about six months ago.  Kind of figured I was gearing up for menopause.  Ive had a couple of hot flashes, but and just irregular bleeding, but that's about it.  Well, I skipped my last couple of periods and thought great I'm done with periods.  Got my period a couple of days ago, and whew boy did I feel like crap.  I have been emotionally wrecked for two days - crying at the drop of a hat and I've just felt ...

Depression, What To Do?Sep 22, 2011
As horrible as it sounds, I hate my job.  We have new QA's and they're horrible.  Nine years of working for the same company and I suddenly find myself unable to get out of bed in the morning.  I'm so tired all the time and dread working.  I'm lucky to have a job and naturally can't quit it but does anyone have any suggestions on how to pull yourself out of this funk? How many people get circumstantial depression from this job?  I find working at home is very isolating and depressing.  Working at home does not benefit me, it benefits the hospital and companies.  What do you do to keep from getting burned out?  Lets be real - this job is boring, very boring.  What can you do to combat the boredome?  Maybe I've just been doing this too long.  I feel isolated and bored everyday.  Like I'm just a number to them wh ...

DepressionJun 05, 2010
I have had depression for as long as I can remember.  For the past few months I have been keeping to myself and avoiding much socialization.  As those of you who have major depresssion know,  it is a hard cycle to break.  I cannot take antidepressants; have tried them all.  I become worse and have suicidal ideation on the medications.  There have been several  issues in my own life and some also with close family members that are making the depression worse.&n ...

DepressionSep 07, 2013
I need prayers and I hate to ask, no idea why.  After 12 years of marriage, I don't think I can take it anymore.  He's extremely verbally abusive and the weekends are horrible.  I dread 5:00 when it's time for him to come home from work.  It has gotten worse since I've been out of work as an MT, as are many of course.  The stress has gotten to the point to where my hands turn blackish/blue and my doctor has told me that I have got to get rid of the st ...

Depression Is NotMay 20, 2016
I remember at the worst of my depression, people would say, even church goers that I was feeling sorry for myself. Then I would get the you are not a victim. I beg to differ about the victim. At any rate, I got mad when people would say that I was feeling sorry for myself and I stopped going to church if the pastor would say that in a sermon. That is one of the worst things anyone can say to someone. It is not guilt I felt as much as anger that my own Christian brothers and sisters in Chri ...

Depression, Etc.Jan 18, 2015
If I am not mistaken there were those in the Bible who suffered from depression and they followed God. Now my opinion is that it does not help anyone to say to them that they are having a pity party. That person is trying to explain how they got to feeling as they do. Others can depress you with their actions albeit deliberately or whatever. To criticize anyone going through a hard time by saying this turns me off. I have heard preachers on TV start talking about pity parties. Okay, lastl ...

MT DepressionSep 08, 2015
Anyone just sit and cry doing MT - not because the report is depressing but because you are just so down about your job?  It makes it worse when you are older and you feel like you are stuck between a rock and a hard place.  By that I mean you are and "older" MT and really do not want to train for anything new but can't quite retire for a few years.  It just stinks. ...

Depression In SeniorsOct 19, 2009
My boyfriend's parents are quite elderly and mother is slightly demented but alert and oriented most of the time. They sleep until 11 or 12 noon daily and go to bed around 10 p.m. The rest of the time they drive to McDonald's for 2 meals a day and otherwise sit in chairs staring at the TV (which is turned all the way up, rest of the house dark). The father is cranky and argumentative, increasingly so. The family calls them "happy as clams." I see depression -- they would appear to have ...

Depression And AnxietyJan 13, 2011
Has anyone been actually treated for depression and anxiety?  I have been going to a psychologist, but it seems like it's going to take forever to make any progress!  I get just as frustrated and panicky knowing I have to go to an appointment as I do sitting at home wishing for work! Just wondering if anyone has had any success with therapy, or if anyone has any real life suggestions or stories about how they overcame this illness.  I've been feeling helpless and at the ...

TOLD YA! We're In A DEPRESSIONAug 24, 2010
This has been obvious for MONTHS, but now finally the "dirty word" has been uttered in mainstream media. (I and a few others have been posting it this board for weeks.)  We are in a DEPRESSION, not a RECESSION. The dead giveaway is the MONEY SUPPLY, and if you follow economics then you know that the M3 data have not been reported by our wonderful "fed" (actually a private corporation) since 2006.  M3 is MONEY SUPPLY.  Ask yourself WHY they would start withholding this crucia ...

Depression And The LordJan 10, 2015
I have a question. A deeply religious person told me once that people who have depression, have it because they haven't found the Lord. Explain, please. Does that mean (in their belief )that people with depression are being punished?? Also, I know some very deeply religious Christians who have found the Lord and still suffer terribly from depression. In other words, they found the Lord, but still have depression. So, that doesn't make sense to me. No Bible quotes, please. ...
