Depression and The Lord

Posted: Jan 10, 2015

I have a question. A deeply religious person told me once that people who have depression, have it because they haven't found the Lord. Explain, please. Does that mean (in their belief )that people with depression are being punished?? Also, I know some very deeply religious Christians who have found the Lord and still suffer terribly from depression. In other words, they found the Lord, but still have depression. So, that doesn't make sense to me. No Bible quotes, please.;

I am a Christian, love with the Lord with all my heart and I know that Jesus died for us to have salvation; yet, I have dealt with depression off and on for years and currently I take medication for it.

I think people sometimes forget that we were born into a world of sin and that the world is the devils playground and full of sin and it will be that way until Jesus comes back. Depression is an ailment of this world as with many other sickness and disease, but by Jesus stripes we can be healed if we have faith and believe and not doubt in our hearts.

You can get depressed and be a Christian, you can break your ankle and still be a Christian, you can have diabetes and still be a Christian etc.. Just because you know the Lord does not mean that bad things will not happen. Again, we live in an imperfect world that's full of sin and the things I named above are products of the imperfect world that we live in. Remember, the world is the devils playground right now. He's on the prowl like a roaring lion at all times seeking whom he may devour. Sickness and infirmities are not of God, but just because you are a Christian and know God does not mean that will never have to experience these things.

I've heard this idea proclaimed from the pulpit many times; that Christians should never be depressed and in fact, a depressed Christian doesn't have his/her heart right with the Lord. What a load of rubbish! I've had major depression issues from childhood, and my belief in God hasn't banished these feelings. Like sm said above, some Christians have MS, cancer, or diabetes. These conditions don't make them any less of a Christian!

Thanks. I thought I was going nuts. Actually, it's not me with depression, but I was having a casual conversation with a Christian counselor and I was just asking her some general questions. She had told me she has a lot of depressed people she "counsels."

She does not have counseling credentials of any sort, so I asked her how she helps them. She told me that they are the way they are because they haven't found the Lord, and she is helping them find the Lord.

I think it's rubbish, too. If someone is depressed, I think they should seek out good old psychological help from the non-religious community.

I'm assuming then they think that would also apply to bipolar disorder, anxiety, ADD, and any other psychotic or mental disorder? Not true at all, the person is just misinformed. Lots of children suffer from these, too, and I don't think it's because they have or have not yet made a religious choice.

Thanks - From OP

Yeah, the "logic" just didn't make sense to me. Almost like it would be the depressed person's fault because they didn't follow the belief system.

Also, thanks to the person who e-mailed me (first name begins with J). I appreciate it. I don't respond via e-mail from any forum messages, but I do appreciate your personal response.

I am bipolar and had been even before I found the Lord. - anon

Just because I found the Lord does not mean my bipolar will go away on its own. It is a chronic ailment. That said, I do believe Jesus is a healer and the ultimate physician. I am in agreement with the other posters regarding that person was misinformed.

We are the ones who have to strive to get out of depression. God is there to lean on in the process.

I Get So Concerned - From OP

When it comes to people calling themselves "counselors," I get concerned. Depressed people are feeling extremely low, hopeless, helpless, feeling guilty about everything, then to be told it's because they haven't found the Lord is disconcerting to me for two reasons: (1) If they choose to seek the Lord and are still depressed, they are going to think they've failed. (2) To start off, they are going to blame themselves for feeling depressed, that they did something wrong because they didn't initially have the Lord in their life.

Christian counselors: Please leave the psychological counseling to the professionals. Utilize your Christian counseling for questions about the Bible, how to find the Lord, etc., but please do not try to be psychological counselors when you have no such training. You can do more damage than good.

Good Points - To Add To Them

[ In Reply To ..]
Telling a depressed person they are a sinner probably isn't a good plan. Kick'em while they're down, why don't ya. And telling them we're all sinners doesn't help them feel any less alone. "Okay, I just found out I'm a sinner, but I'm not the only one. Gosh, that makes me feel better." Don't think so.

Good Lord Am I In Perimenopause Or Going Insane?Oct 19, 2013
I'm hoping to hear from ladies who have recently went into menopause. I'm 49, still having periods, though irregular lately. For the past year or so I have been feeling like I'm going to go insane. Started out with a case of severe vertigo which led me to a year of a carnival horror ride of feeling nauseated, anxious, unable to sleep, and literally feeling like I was going to die. It landed me in the emergency room, they did a CAT scan, MRI, sent me to ENT. They found NOTHING ...

Depression Is NotMay 20, 2016
I remember at the worst of my depression, people would say, even church goers that I was feeling sorry for myself. Then I would get the you are not a victim. I beg to differ about the victim. At any rate, I got mad when people would say that I was feeling sorry for myself and I stopped going to church if the pastor would say that in a sermon. That is one of the worst things anyone can say to someone. It is not guilt I felt as much as anger that my own Christian brothers and sisters in Chri ...

Depression, Etc.Jan 18, 2015
If I am not mistaken there were those in the Bible who suffered from depression and they followed God. Now my opinion is that it does not help anyone to say to them that they are having a pity party. That person is trying to explain how they got to feeling as they do. Others can depress you with their actions albeit deliberately or whatever. To criticize anyone going through a hard time by saying this turns me off. I have heard preachers on TV start talking about pity parties. Okay, lastl ...

Apologies for that, but it was too funny not to share: If Harry Reid was the protagonist in Lord of the Rings, it would not be 3 books long. It would be a pamphlet: Strider: Here come the orcs. Reid: Oh. Give them the ring. -------- Pelosi has it all over Reid. Her courage puts Reid to shame. The good news is that Obama told the dems he'll give bipartisanshi ...

Depression In SeniorsOct 19, 2009
My boyfriend's parents are quite elderly and mother is slightly demented but alert and oriented most of the time. They sleep until 11 or 12 noon daily and go to bed around 10 p.m. The rest of the time they drive to McDonald's for 2 meals a day and otherwise sit in chairs staring at the TV (which is turned all the way up, rest of the house dark). The father is cranky and argumentative, increasingly so. The family calls them "happy as clams." I see depression -- they would appear to have ...

Has Anyone Ever Taken A Homeopathic Medicine For Depression?Apr 14, 2011
I've tried several of the traditional medications for depression - Prozac, Effexor, and Zoloft.  They work for a while, I had some side effects, but then they stopped working and the depression came back every time.  I've heard more cons than pros about St. John's Wort, so I'm not sure I want to go that route, but would like to hear from anyone else who has tried the homeopathic route and got good results (or bad, so I know what to stay away from!)
