Depression, etc.
Posted: Jan 18, 2015
If I am not mistaken there were those in the Bible who suffered from depression and they followed God.
Now my opinion is that it does not help anyone to say to them that they are having a pity party. That person is trying to explain how they got to feeling as they do. Others can depress you with their actions albeit deliberately or whatever. To criticize anyone going through a hard time by saying this turns me off. I have heard preachers on TV start talking about pity parties.
Okay, lastly I don't think it is a good idea to say to another Christian that they don't have the faith to overcome the depression or that there is something lacking in their walk with God.
I have been wounded by my bros and sisters in Christ sometimes more than non Christians. That hurts because I guess I feel they should know better. I have also seen some Christians support another but seemingly you have to be a certain type of depressed person, a deserving Christian in their eyes maybe before you are worth their prayers. That really cuts me to the quick. I have hardly any support system. People do not want to hear about your problems. That is a shame that they can't see that they themselves might be in a similar situation. I have hardly any family and I have lost many friends as well.
I had a Christian friend who had exactly the same thing happen to her and this was after she had criticized me for thoughts of suicide when I was at my lowest. She admitted to me that she was wrong in saying many things to me that she did. She now understands.
So it is better not to judge someone. I don't like it when I see other Christians on the Prayer board criticize someone and say that they are repeating their story over and over again. If they are, then it still is bothering them. Often times we go through long years of suffering from things done to us no matter how hard we try to overcome. Triggers such as holidays will often bring this to bear. For me, I would rather sleep from October 31 through January 1 of the next year. That is a particularly bad time. I had a lot of losses during those times, holidays, etc. Pile on year after year of losses, eventually it becomes too much to bear.
Sometimes, Christians believe that if they do everything right, they should not have problems and on the outside it sure seems like they don't have. That is when you start doubting yourself and wondering why you never see some Christians have huge problems like you are having or others are.
We all have to grow and I can more readily understand many people now that I myself have been through so much. That does not mean that I do anything but listen to them. I don't try to solve their problems as some others will try. I don't need fixing. I need someone to listen and care. Everyone needs that. It is cruel to call someone needy, especially someone who has no one close to them. They are not begging for pity. I resent that fact because I am independent and do not like to depend on anyone else if I can do it myself. I have been primary caregiver to some in my family and it is hard to give up and accept help when you need it. Believe me, you make a mistake when you do. There are those who want to help.
These are just my ideas and thoughts on things that I have experienced. No judgment or insult intended. ;
I'll pray for you, Anonie. - sm

Christian or not, everybody has ups and downs in life, and I'm no exception and neither are you, Anonie. I'm a Christian and I've struggled with depressional from my teen years and still through today. I've learned that in order to keep myself from sinking down to the depths, I have to lean on God with all my heart and soul. I also have to take charge of my day. I'm pretty good on sunny days, but winter does a number on my mood and motivation. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's are all packed tightly together in the winter, so those holidays can be hard. However, I've grown to realize that my family, dysfunctional though we may be, really means a lot to me. I'm starting to really appreciate each holiday I spend with them. I have the most wonderful girlfriends in the world, and they make sure that I don't have too much "down time" during the holidays. The way I look at it, there are only 9 weeks until spring! It helps me to not dwell on the gray days but instead to count on the sunny days. Depression sucks. So do cancer, diabetes, and all the other horrible diseases that affect millions of people. When I'm feeling low, the best remedy is to get busy, socialize, and help others.
I hope you'll feel better very soon, Anonie.

Thanks both of you. I should put this in the prayer board but want to put it here too.
I have to quit smoking and I have the patch. However, I am still having really bad cravings for one. I am not really having withdrawal now but just the awful cravings.
Please pray this time I finally get rid of these things. It means my health. I have tried so many times and failed.
I appreciate your support to all who have taken time to answer me.

I have complete faith that you'll be able to kick the habit, anonie! It isn't easy, as I can attest to. But I did it, and so can you! Here's a trick that was helpful to me: Buy a jar of whole cloves. Put one clove on the inside of your cheek. DO NOT SWALLOW IT. The taste of cloves somehow mimics the taste of tobacco (I guess). My counselor actually told me about it, as he used cloves to help him quit smoking.

I have heard that cinnamon sticks help, but will try the cloves. Is it okay to swallow the saliva. I know you say not to swallow the cloves.
Do you know if Ginger has any properties that way. I try to drink Gingerale when my stomach is bothering me. I am on my last three days of antibiotic and don't have much of an appetite. I will be glad when I am off of them finally. I have had antibiotics from 01/02 to when I finish these in about three days, nearly 24 days of antibiotics?

anxiety and PTSD. It is horrible and impossible to "just snap out of." I too have been hurt by "Christians." I recently have gone through horrible times and NOT ONE person from church has called to see how I am nor has anyone asked to stop by and pray for and with me!! I am, at this point, very disappointed in "Christians."
Unbelievable that they can call themselves Christians - anonie

Honestly, in the Bible it says that if one hurts, everyone hurts. That is supposed to be how the church operates.
I am so sorry you have been hurt by Christians as well.
Don't judge everyone by them. However, until ministers start talking about this and tell congregations to get behind people like us, it won't happen.
What do you do to "get behind" people - like THEM??

This goes two ways, you know. What do both of you do to support, encourage, and show charity toward others?
In your posts, I see a lot of complaining about people not paying attention to you. I don't see posts about you visiting the sick, feeding the poor, helping the lame, or volunteering with the homeless.
Everyone has difficult times, you know. If you can't be there for even their occasional difficulties, imagine how much harder it is for them to be there for you when it never seems to stop. Most people do not have enough personal resources or the training to provide never-ending psychological support services. Most just don't know what to do, since nothing they do helps.
Just trying to help you see this from their perspective.

DepressionJun 05, 2010I have had depression for as long as I can remember. For the past few months I have been keeping to myself and avoiding much socialization. Depression Is NotMay 20, 2016I remember at the worst of my depression, people would say, even church goers that I was feeling sorry for myself. Then I would get the you are not a victim. I beg to differ about the victim.
At any rate, I got mad when people would say that I was feeling sorry for myself and I stopped going to church if the pastor would say that in a sermon.
That is one of the worst things anyone can say to someone. It is not guilt I felt as much as anger that my own Christian brothers and sisters in Chri ...
MT DepressionSep 08, 2015Anyone just sit and cry doing MT - not because the report is depressing but because you are just so down about your job? Depression In SeniorsOct 19, 2009My boyfriend's parents are quite elderly and mother is slightly demented but alert and oriented most of the time. They sleep until 11 or 12 noon daily and go to bed around 10 p.m. The rest of the time they drive to McDonald's for 2 meals a day and otherwise sit in chairs staring at the TV (which is turned all the way up, rest of the house dark). The father is cranky and argumentative, increasingly so. The family calls them "happy as clams." I see depression -- they would appear to have ...

Depression And The LordJan 10, 2015I have a question. A deeply religious person told me once that people who have depression, have it because they haven't found the Lord.
Explain, please. Does that mean (in their belief )that people with depression are being punished??
Also, I know some very deeply religious Christians who have found the Lord and still suffer terribly from depression. In other words, they found the Lord, but still have depression. So, that doesn't make sense to me.
No Bible quotes, please. ...
Has Anyone Ever Taken A Homeopathic Medicine For Depression?Apr 14, 2011I've tried several of the traditional medications for depression - Prozac, Effexor, and Zoloft. They work for a while, I had some side effects, but then they stopped working and the depression came back every time. I've heard more cons than pros about St. John's Wort, so I'm not sure I want to go that route, but would like to hear from anyone else who has tried the homeopathic route and got good results (or bad, so I know what to stay away from!)

Did Obama Really Prevent A Second Great Depression?
By JOHN MERLINE, INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILYPosted 06/20/2011 05:54 PM ET

But is it an accurate portrayal of what really happened?
