Happy 48th birthday to Medicare. Ronald Reagan and the right wing tried to kill Medicare before it was signed, sealed, and delivered on July 30, 1965, by calling it socialized medicine and the end of America as we know it.
Quoting Reagan: “[I]f you don’t [stop Medicare] and I don’t do it, one of these days you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it once was like in America when men were free.”
Quoting Bush (the younger): "They hate us for our freedom."
So, good news people, we are apparently still free, and now 48 years later Medicare is a very popular program. It has its flaws like everything else, but then very few things are perfect.
Now, if the right wing can learn anything from history, they will stop beating the "socialized medicine" drum and stop repeating the "end of freedom in America" line of bull that is so tired and old. The fact of the matter is that these right wing lines of attack have now been going on for 50 years....... 50 years!, and they haven't worked yet and they're NEVER going to work. I've heard it so many times it has become laughable.
Medicare and Obamacare are here to stay.
Simplified Rules for Medicare/Obamacare
1. If you are eligible for Medicare but do not want it, I assure you that contrary to what Reagan predicted, this is still a free country. You are free to buy other insurance and not use Medicare.
2. If you are eligible for Obamacare but do not want it, please see rule #1.
