Diagnosing family members

Posted: Nov 9, 2009

Ok, I'm sure this has happend to many of you. Your family members come to you for a diagnosis since "you hear it all the time". My sister has been complaining for a very long time now of severe mood swings, slowly putting on some weight, and thinning hair. I suggested she have her doctor check her thyroid since our mother has a thyroid issue. Well the test came back within normal limits (what ever that is, lol), but she had anemia with hemoglobin in the 7s. She had to have 5 iron fusions; still is not feeling any better, and says her hair is really falling out bad and it is really upsetting her that she can't seem to get a straight answer. She also has restless leg syndrome. Now, I have done searches on low iron, hair loss, and restless leg, but I still don't know how I should advise her. Has anyone had these symptoms that can help me to help her? TIA.

She needs to keep going back to the doctor. These could be symptoms of a secondary nature even. Didn't the provider give her a follow-up visit? If not, I would suggestion a new physician.

Have her try that at least, heard it works.

but she might want to see a GYN about PCOS. I've had irregular periods since puberty and only after stopping birth control did I start to lose lots of hair and I have put on almost 16 pounds in the last year. If she has heavy periods that could be the low iron part of it. My PCP did thyroid function tests too and they all came back within normal limits, as did all my hormone tests, LFTs and lipid panel. The GYN he referred me to is the one who just recently diagnosed me. Good luck to your sister - hope this helps.

Cushings? Sounds like she needs to see an endo/hemo doc. I like the web site www.wrongdiagnosis.com. Often, you can post your symptoms and someone will either have had them or knows what the problem is. Sometimes, though, you don't get a reply at all.

Could be iron deficiency anemia.

I know all about the straight answer bit. English is my MIL's fourth language so by the time she hears whatever she hears from the doctor, it gets passed to my non-medical SIL, who passes it to my non-medical husband, then it comes to me. Every once in awhile, I'll be lucky to catch a doctor in with her if she's in the hospital.

within normal limits - low or high?

Kelp tablets from the health food store, one a day. There are also yoga poses for thyroid. Sounds like she is at the very low end of normal limits. If she wants to be on thyroid medication she could get a second opinion, otherwise, the kelp should help a lot.

Sponging Family Members!Nov 03, 2013
I have a cousin and her family is so irritating and they seem to sponge off of everyone.  They work and make decent money, but live as if they have no money whatsoever.  They never buy things unless it comes from a thrift store and such and even when my cousin visits me, she almost begs me for my clothes, shoes or whatever.   My cousin, her husband and daughter will just show up at random family members houses, me included, and hang around and when it's dinnertime, she will A ...

Need Ideas For A Family Reunion Family Tree Display Or Art Or????Nov 20, 2010
My grandma's side of the family has a biannual family reunion and it's a pretty big party.  Every reunion a different families "hosts" the reunion.  Hosting generally means they pick a location for everyone to gather, book the facility and caterers, send out the newsletter, and contact local motels and campgrounds for special group rates, etc.  Then of course their in charge of the events at the dinner like giving prizes for who traveled the farthest, the oldest, the you ...

Poll Of NRA Members Shows 74% SupportDec 15, 2012
Not much lower than 82% for the general population, but definitely MUCH higher than the NRA leadership. I've forgotten the number, but most NRA members, normal citizens who undergo them themselves, actually believe gun purchases require background checks. Although the Brady law requires background checks be conducted by commercial gun dealers, at least 40% of gun sales  (last study 15 years old) are private sales not involving background checks. (BTW, eBay and Craig's List do not ...

Unreal. Church Turns Members AwayFeb 25, 2014
This is a church in Indiana that is being torn apart after they dismissed the choral director because he is gay.  The man evidently believes that people want to disrupt the service.  Can't believe the man blocking the door tells the elderly lady, "keep your hands off of me, Eleanor" after she lays her hand on his arm while talking to him. It's Time To Re-think Immunity For Members Of CongressApr 04, 2015
I think we're all tired of politicians lying to us.  When they do so in their "official" capacity, i.e. from the floor of either chamber of Congress, they are immune from prosecution, lawsuits, etc.  I'm thinking, of course, about the lies Harry Reid told about Mitt Romney not paying his taxes, but he's certainly neither the sole nor the founding member of the Liar's Club in Congress.  I also think that governmental officials such as Lois Lerner should have no ...

Ever since the League of Nations, treaties that the US has entered into with respect to so-called "allies" have resulted in the US bearing the brunt of the heavy lifting, both financially and militarily while these so-called "allies" have skipped out on their own obligations.  The press is making a big deal out of the fact that Trump will not allow this situation to persist.  In response to whether the US would honor OUR obligations to defend NATO states, he DARES TO ASK WHETHER THEY ...

Harried Reid And Other Members Of The Court Have Weighed In On The Snyder CaseMay 28, 2010
It's about time our reps get involved in this case.  I just heard this on our local news so looked for it. It's great that the Supreme Court decided to hear the case, but hearing this today makes me jump for joy. Reid weighs in on lawsuit over protests at soldier's fune ...
