My grandma's side of the family has a biannual family reunion and it's a pretty big party. Every reunion a different families "hosts" the reunion. Hosting generally means they pick a location for everyone to gather, book the facility and caterers, send out the newsletter, and contact local motels and campgrounds for special group rates, etc. Then of course their in charge of the events at the dinner like giving prizes for who traveled the farthest, the oldest, the youngest, the family with the most members present, etc.
Next summer (2011) my mom, sister, and I volunteered to coordinate or host. We've done all the "easy" stuff meaning the straightforward planning. We've booked the facility, narrowed it down to three caterers, and even secured a bock of rooms at a local motel just for those attending the reunion. Blah, blah blah. What we don't have is something cool for a display. I want to do something impressive. I have researched the family line back to 1700s and I'd really like to some sort of family tree display. Past reunions, people have done a video display of pictures from past reunions, etc. Problem neither my mom, sister or I have an artistic, creative, crafty bone in our bodies. So I need help!
My great grandfather basically had two families. He had 7 kids with his first wife who died rather young and he remarried and had five more kids. Anyway, my grandmother died last year leaving only one surviving member of the first family who will definitely be the oldest at this reunion and we want to make something special for her like a family tree quilt or something that she can cherish, but I also want to duplicate whatever I decide to do for my mom because these reunions were something that she and my grandmother always attended together and my sister and I wanted to do sort of an In Memoriam for my grandma.
Anyway, any ideas of how I can get something like a quilt made. No one sews. My grandma made quilts (we all have one) and we never found the time to sit down with her and have her pass the skill on. And that's why I'm leaning towards the quilt idea.
