Ever since the League of Nations, treaties that the US has entered into with respect to so-called "allies" have resulted in the US bearing the brunt of the heavy lifting, both financially and militarily while these so-called "allies" have skipped out on their own obligations.
The press is making a big deal out of the fact that Trump will not allow this situation to persist. In response to whether the US would honor OUR obligations to defend NATO states, he DARES TO ASK WHETHER THEY HAVE HONORED THEIR OBLIGATIONS.
The press is saying that Trump's position is "frightening" to our allies. Why so? Because you're one of the nations ignoring your own responsibilities?
I'm fine with Trump serving notice on our alliies that the US will no longer be spewing money and sacrificing American lives like there's an endless supply of either. And I think it's quite predictable that when the sugar-daddy says enough is enough, the flies will naturally be dismayed. When I think of some of the behaviors of our so-called alllies (for instance, France refusing to allow US planes to fly over its territory in 1986, and withdrawing troop commitments during Desert Storm), I have no problem with Trump saying:
THE PARTY IS OVER! BE AN ALLY OR NOT, BUT IF YOU ARE AN ALLY, SHOULDER YOUR PART OF THE DEAL.
Liberals will, of course, find this notion quite quaint.
