Update on Miss Kelsey - ColtsFan

She is doing much, much better. She isn't in so much pain. She is on a lot of steroids (5 mg 2x dly) and a muscle relaxant. Tomorrow, we start to taper the steroids. She isn't back to normal, but I really don't think she will be. I know this sounds crazy, but she seems depressed. I'm assuming it is from the medication and she is just drugged up. I'm kind of nervous about tapering the steroids and cutting out the muscle relaxant. Hopefully, she will continue to do well.
Thank you very much for asking!

My dog is the same age as yours, same problem as yours. Vet gave him tapering steroids. He told me it was just a temporary fix to give him some relief and he was correct. He's still gimping around but he's definitely an old dog now. Can't expect the poor things to live forever I guess, but I know it's just a matter of time. Good luck to you and yours but don't get your hopes too high.

I am afraid the same thing is going to happen to her. She's not herself at all, but I am hoping she's just drugged up. She really wants to jump up on the couch but just looks at it and walks off. She seems really sad. She's been a great dog. I hope we have some more time together, but I won't let her live in pain and I hope I know when the time is right. Thanks for your note!
step stool - Another animal lover

Try putting a step stool by the sofa and/or the bed (if she's allowed on the bed) and that way when she does feel a little bit better she won't try to jump up or down and end up hurting herself. It sounds crazy, but it's worked for me in the past with older animals.
She may very well feel sad. I believe animals feel similar emotions that humans do and just as we get down and depressed when we are sick or in pain, animals will feel that way, too. Something as minor as being able to get into her favorite spot on the sofa again may be just what she needs to start feeling closer to her baseline.
Glad to hear she's doing better. Hope she continues to get better - MT4Eight

I have little dog steps for my doggies to get into bed, maybe you could use those for her to get onto the couch. My dogs use them all the time, even my cats use them when they're feeling lazy I guess.

Min Pin DoggieApr 25, 2010She's almost 8 years old. She's getting more and more neurotic as the days and weeks go by. They are a high-strung breed anyway, and when we first got her our vet told us to train her immediately as far as not allowing her to growl when someone was around her food bowl. She said for me to put my hand in the bowl while the dog was eating to show her I was the dominant one. I did that. She seemed to do okay for a year or two but then started becoming really, ...
Doggie Contest Sm .....Dec 22, 2009I've entered my dog in a contest, wondered if anyone would like to go vote for him? Here's a link
His name is Zeus, he's a basset hound and he has a santa hat on in front of a Christmas tree. I'm going to try to put his picture on the board so you can see him. I've never done that before, but I'll try. Ok, couldn't figure it out. Sorry.

While I'm At It, I Need A Doggie Diet.Jul 02, 2010Our dog weighs 108 pounds (black lab). She doesn't want to exercise. Won't play anymore. Just lays around. She weighed 96 pounds 2 years ago and at the vet this past winter, she put on the extra 12 pounds during the year.
We were only giving her 1 can of dog food and 1 can of dry food (scooped up with a regular veggie size can) a day. She seemed okay with this but still gained weight. We tried cutting back to 1/2 can dog food and dry food, but she wasn't happy 'cau ...
