Books I want to read in 2013 - love to read

The Game of Thrones 5 book set

Anna Karenina

Jodi Picoult's new book probably out in March

11.22.63

I have 800+ books on my kindle and 1000+ on my nook in addition to my 3 bookshelves that are full and overflowing!  I was supposed to marry rich and spend my life reading; instead I married equal, he is laid off and we all know how much we transcriptionists are making these days.

Any other suggestions for reading materials? I love finding new authors.  My favs are Jodi, Patricia Cornwell, Greg Iles, John Grisham, Lisa Jackson among others.

Love to read also! - Ayn

Oooh, I love to read! I'll read just about anything fiction, but especially like horror/mystery/thrillers. Not sure where I would even begin my list -- Kristin Hannah & Hugh Howey have been new discoveries for me this past year. Have read several of their works and plan to read more. Dean Koontz and Clive Barker are always favorites. I just ordered The Last Ship by William Brinkley today - lost my copy from years ago and want to re-read it this coming year. Also about time to re-read Atlas Shrugged. I've read that one about 7 times...

Just discovered Margaret Atwood - Shipwrecked

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm almost finished my first book by Margaret Atwood, "Cat's Eye." She was recommended by a friend, so when I searched the library for her books for my Kindle, I discovered that some of them sound a little "futuristic" for my taste, but Cat's Eye is wonderful. She has a wonderful way with words, and brings back memories of my own (distant) childhood that I'd totally forgotten.

Congratulations on discovering her!! One of my fav authors. Might want to check out SURFACING. I remember really liking it. I also noticed THE HANDMAIDENS TALE is on sale for the Kindle today. aHave you read Barbara Kingsolver?
On sale!! - shipwrecked
[ In Reply To ..]
OMG! Thanks, I just bought it. So many books, so little time. I'll check out Kngsolver too. I usually limit myself to what I can get free from the library, since spending $12 from Amazon irks me, especially when you can "buy it used" for dirt cheap, but I've lost my taste for "real books."

Cool!! Hope you enjoy it. I know what you mean about paying so much these days on Kindle. Hey, have you checked out Lendle? It's a lending site for Kindle users. Not new books or anything, but I have borrowed a couple good ones and loaned a few.

love her! - sm

I loved Cat's Eye, as well as The Handmaid's Tale, as mentioned by another poster - but certainly, that would classify as a dystopian novel. I loved The Blind Assassin and Lady Oracle. The Year of the Flood was absolutely wonderful, and I totally enjoyed Oryx and Crake.

You might enjoy Ann Patchett - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
She is such a luscious writer. All of her books are wonderful. Bel Canto is one of the most gorgeous books I have ever read.

Life of Pi (by Yann Martel) is a very beautiful book, as well.

I didnt even know this author but it was on sale on Kindle so I read it and what a great story!! WHAT THE DEAD KNOW by Laura Lippmann.

My Favorite Author - Reader

[ In Reply To ..]
My absolute favorite author is V.C. Andrews. It's kind of like the books are in a series, but if you read out of order, it's not big deal. I was reading them all scattered until I realized that some of them are connected. Same idea as Ann of Green Gables, Ann of Avonlea, etc., no biggie if you don't read the first one first.

Favorite non-fiction Author - Love True Crime

[ In Reply To ..]
My favorite non-fiction author for true crime is Ann Rule. She's a great writer. I think she did do a couple of fictional books, but I always prefer the true crime over fictional crime.

I love Ann Rule's books, too!! - (see message)

[ In Reply To ..]
I so agree with you on this! Ann Rule does such a wonderful job of really fleshing out every single (real-life) character in her books, including the police/detectives, victim(s), killer, and friends and family of both the victim(s) and killer. I find the criminal mind to be fascinating, and she explains a lot of the psychological aspects in such an understandable way.

The first Ann Rule book that I read was "The Stranger Beside Me," about the Ted Bundy killings; but one of her best, in my opinion, was "Small Sacrifices."

Absolutely! - Love True Crime

[ In Reply To ..]
Stranger Beside Me was my first Ann Rule book, too. I also read Small Sacrifices and several others. She really does get into the psychological aspect, which is what fascinates me.

I just finished Barbara Kingsolver's new book, FLIGHT PLAN. Shes a great author if you havent checked her out. Also, love Alice Hoffman, THE DOVEKEEPERS is her latest. Ive never read a bad book by her. I could go on and on, but these authors remind me a bit of Piccoult.

I have a Kingsolver book - wheres_my_job

They are big novels...I should probably start one, and push through...

I love pretty much anything by Jodi Picoult, James Patterson and David Baldacci. Discovered Baldacci by "accident," when I got a bag of books to read from my daughter-in-law. Now I just love to read him! Got two of his books for Christmas and can't wait to start reading! Got "Merry Christmas, Alex Cross" as a present too. Happy reading everyone! :o)

sf/fantasy - effie

[ In Reply To ..]
Most of the books I read are SF/Fantasy.. meaning I am a huge fan of Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Twilight, etc. I also love Gail Carrigan's Souless series which is really quirky and The Vampire Academy Series. Love anything writen by Anne McCaffrey. I just recently discovered Karleen Koen and while I didn't much care for the ending of her series, the book Through a Glass Darkely is really good.. romance but historical. The book, THe Things that Keep Us Here, by Carla Buckley is about what happens if the bird flu hits the US and is a really good book.

The last Wheel of Time book comes out in Jan - grits

It's bittersweet; DH and I started reading the series in 1994. The characters are like family. :)

The series has its quirks - some say it's excessively wordy and it does tend to drag in the middle. Worst of all, the author died with 3 books left to go and the new guy just doesn't quite fill his shoes.

It owns a part of my heart that no other series will ever claim, though, and I'm glad to be here for the end.

You should try out the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett--considering the season, I'd start with The Hogfather.

Anything by Neil Gaiman is a favorite of mine too.

"Jacob's Garden" by Sharon Worth, available through Barnes & Noble.

Game of Thrones..... - Obsessed

[ In Reply To ..]
I have read all of the A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones is the first in the series) and I was absolutely obsessed. My husband says it cost us thousands because I was always reading and not working. If you start them, read slowly. Even though it is about 7000 pages in total I blew through them and the next book in the series is not due out until sometimes in 2014, so I'm dying over here. After that I started The Stand by Stephen King, which was really good. Next I'm going for the Lord of The Rings. I definately recommend A Song of Ice and Fire!

Does Mitt think this is okay?  NEW YORK (AP) -- Profits at big U.S. companies broke records last year, and so did pay for CEOs. That was up more than 6 percent from the previous year, and is the second year in a row of increases. The figure is also the highest since the AP began tracking executive compensation in 20 ...
