School privacy practices?

Posted: Feb 9, 2014

Does anyone know the answer to this question with a link that I could read about it?  My child's school is ran by a few women that I'm sorry but they honestly LOVE drama.  They are the type that backstab, talk about people, try to get people in trouble, etc.  My child was out of school (with a doctor's excuse) and FIVE different people from the school questioned her on why she was out and wanted to know exactly what she went to the doctor for.  Then, the next time she was out, same thing, demanding to know exactly what the doctor said was wrong, even though she had an excuse from the doctor saying she couldn't attend that day.  My daughter is only 7 and it upsets her, because she feels like she is doing something wrong.  I get the whole truancy and she should understand how important school is, but can they even legally ask her what her diagnoses are or whatever?

I have already called them and told them if they had any issue whatsoever with her being absent to please contact ME and they still harassed her the next time she was out.  It is becoming overly frustrating, because she has been sick a lot this school year and honestly if they would stop demanding sick children to go to school then perhaps mine could get well and stop picking up so many germs.

you are a little defensive - go to the school for a chat

I understand how something like this can bring out the mama bear in you, but if you feel this strongly about it, go to the school to have a talk with the teacher (first), the assistant principal (second), the principal (third), and if still not satisfied, write a letter to the principal with a copy to the school board. You have a lot of years left for your child to go through school, and if you can't find a way to move through it peacefully, it is going to only get worse.

are you getting this information from your child? - East MT

I am just curious on how she is being questioned. For background info, i have a 15 and 10 year old. They may be asking, "Oh no suzie i'm sorry you were out today!! what did the doctor say was wrong with you? I hope you didn't have to take any yucky medicine!"

Your child may be misinterpreting what they are asking her. Trust me I have experienced this and ended up very embarrassed!

On the other hand, schools also like to know if something like the flu or strep is going around. This may be another reason for questioning.

If you truly feel she is being harassed unnecessarily I would definitely suggest the steps posted above.

Good luck!

She has missed too much school, because she has been sick A LOT. I do understand the concern to an extent, but not so much because I keep constant communication with the staff at the school. When my daughter was written out of school for a week for Strep, the school board lady actually came to my house and asked why she couldn't go to school even after I had called the school to explain about her Strep. I told her that my daughter had Strep and her exact words were...."Well, she doesn't feel well enough just to come to school and sit in a desk?" Strep is contagious, I didn't ask the doctor to write her out, it is an inconvenience for me for her to be out, so for this lady to come and suggest that I should go against what a doctor says is beyond me!

Then, maybe a month after that, my daughter got sick yet again, went to the doctor yet again and she came home and told me five different names of people who asked her why she was out and even after she told them she was sick and went to the doctor, they told her she MUST come to school and if not "Mommy and daddy will have to have a police car pick them up to take them to jail."

strep only continues to be contagious for 24 hours - after antibiotics are started

Feeling up to going back is subjective, but I could understand why the school would feel you were keeping her out too long. But she must be missing more school than you are mentioning here that would prompt a home visit by the "school board lady." They don't just come out because she stayed home one or two days and then missed a week with strep, either. Pediatricians here where I live don't write a child out for a week from strep unless a recheck confirms a need to be out longer. Max they write out for strep is two days, and some won't even write for that long.
Well, I don't know why the doctor wrote her out - sm

I mean, she was diagnosed with Strep and was sick. I didn't ask the doctor to write her out, I have to take off of work when he does that. He typically only writes her out for the day she is seen but he said she had to be out, so I followed what he said.
well then now we know why the school is worried - you might have to go to jail

Common sense in parenting is something you are responsible for. Our school will send a letter when 3 days are missed reminding the parent no more than 10 days can be missed in a year. You can blame it on the doctor, but it is still your responsibility your child attends the mandatory number of days required by the state in which you live.

You child is not to be questioned about her medical status, whether she was out of school for a cold or something (God forbid) more serious. It was appropriate for you to advise the school to speak with you directly. It was not appropriate for the school to question your daughter.

Something To Beware Of/privacy IssuesJan 03, 2016
I have been spending the day studying. The issues of privacy and what lawyers call a "reasonable expectation of privacy" came up. A girlfriend of mine recently (just on a whim) did that thing where you can have your DNA tested by that organization called Ancestry--the purpose was to determine her ethnicity. (Her parents were both Italian immigrants and she herself was born in NYC.) Anyway, she paid about $100 and the test told her she was 70% Italian, 20% German, and 10% West Indian. The We ...

Need Opinions Please About School (sm)Jan 24, 2011
I am currently looking into returning to school like so many other MTs out there.  There are programs where you can get an Associates Degree in Healthcare Management (basically medical records), which I am really not interested in because, as I see it, most hospitals are trying to cut down their medical records departments to as slim of staff as possible, plus with the integration of EMR, I just do not see this being a lucrative field.  IF, big big IF here, I were to enter into this pr ...

Anyone Do Online 'virtual' SchoolJan 21, 2010
I'm considering doing the virtual school for my son next schoolyear, which will be his 6th grade year.
