Warning! Chinese jerky making dogs/cats sick

Posted: Oct 23, 2013

This is BS!

(CNN) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has a message for veterinarians and pet owners: If dogs or cats get sick after eating jerky pet treats, let us know.

The agency says it's received reports of more than 3,600 dogs and 10 cats that got sick after eating jerky pet treats since 2007. Of those cases, the FDA says, more than 580 pets have died.

"This is one of the most elusive and mysterious outbreaks we've encountered," said Bernadette Dunham, director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine.

"Most of the jerky treats implicated have been made in China," the FDA said. Investigators have tested more than 1,200 samples but haven't uncovered what could be causing the illnesses.

On Tuesday, the FDA issued a letter to veterinarians asking for help tracking the illnesses. The agency also released a fact sheet for pet owners warning of possible symptoms, including decreased appetite, decreased activity, vomiting, diarrhea, increased water consumption and increased urination.

"FDA recommends that pet owners whose pet becomes sick after eating jerky pet treats should hold on to any unused portion of the product in its original container for at least 60 days, in case FDA calls to request samples for testing," the fact sheet says. "Owners should place the container inside a sealable plastic bag, if possible."

The FDA says there isn't a particular brand for which consumers should watch.

"The illnesses have been linked to many brands of jerky treats," the FDA says. "The one common factor the cases share is consumption of a chicken or duck jerky treat or jerky-wrapped treat, mostly imported from China."

China has been after our pets - for quite some time

[ In Reply To ..]
and yet the USA still continues to import this "crap!" Personally, I would not purchase anything that came from China. They are riding our backs to their financial success and laughing at us because they own us.

what do you mean, they've been after our pets? - p.s.

[ In Reply To ..]
they are not riding our backs to their financial success. Every time an American company sends its manufacturing to China, the American company is riding OUR backs to ITS financial success. If you shop at Walmart you are supporting China. American consumers could change the face of American business by buying American.

Now we have American companies sending American-raised chickens to China to be processed and shipped back to us. So stop eating chicken McNuggets, stop shopping at Walmart, and stop blaming China.

oh my! - For one thing....

[ In Reply To ..]
I DO NOT shop at Walmart and have not for quite some time! I avoid that store like the plague for my personal reasons! I also do not eat at McDonalds and eat McNuggets or anything else of theirs, for that matter, due to physical problems it causes. I blame China and say they have been after our pets for quite some time, because of the pet food debacle a few years back! Our FDA does not regulate what they put into our pets food...nor do they care. I buy American all the time and do not support anything with trade to or from China... so do not point the finger at me, either! you know nothing about me or my buying habits. you just "assume." ugh. some people.
So, where did your computer come from? - sm

Betcha it was made in China. I'd also be willing to put money on the fact that you've bought an overseas product in the last 2 weeks.

And yeah, I'm sure there's some big Chinese conspiracy to deprive us Americans of our pets. ('cause that's what sane, logical people think. Oh wait, bigots are neither sane nor logical. Sorry, my bad)

I don't argue with fools. I was just asking a question. Your answer speaks loud and clear, sweetie.
whoa there "chickie" - I am not a fool
[ In Reply To ..]
you were not just 'asking a question'. you were insinuating that I buy from China and trying to start a fight. You are still trying to start a fight by calling me a fool!! (you will be reported for that one).

As far as my computer, well, my son built it for me. It is not a "brand" name computer. But that is more information than you need to know. Just because you insinuate that you know the answer just from reading my non-reply, you are totally wrong, and really, my personal life, my business life, is none of your business. If you want to challenge someone, ms. know-it-all, take a look in the mirror.

I said "fools," not fool. Are you more than 1 person?

You have thoroughly proved yourself to be a paranoid, hypersensitive, hate-filled, venom spitting, bigoted hypocrite, and that's all I "need to know."

There's no argument here, except you fighting the truth.

I am the "p.s." poster. The poster you are fighting with is not me. I'm sorry I was unclear in my post. I didn't mean to insinuate that you (personally) buy from China; I just meant the general, plural "you".

That said, I still don't feel that the Chinese are after our pets. America does not do well enough at inspecting Chinese pet foods - that is OUR fault. Furthermore, MANY of these pet foods from China are manufactured by American companies, who also are guilty of poor oversight if toxic products reach American consumers.

My friend's 2 dogs died from Chinese treats. I only buy American now! nm - clb

dog treats - nana

[ In Reply To ..]
I am dismayed that we get dog food and treats from China and the FDA does nothing to stop it. With everything that they are putting in dog food and now treats I think I am going to feed my dog people food and I saw the cutest dog bone maker at Carsons for under $40. I might just buy that and make her her own dog bones and treats.

People food may not be the best for them but it seems the dog food that is supposed to be good for them isn't. My parents had 2 dogs and they both lived to be in their 20s before they had to be put down and my mother never fed them anything but people food.

When is this government going to put a stop to all this crap that comes from China. Between the lead based paint on toys and now poisoining our animals they should send everything back to China and get companies here in the good ol US to produce the stuff. The so called American companies that use China should be fined up the butt for this. I would gladly pay more for something made here.

Never buy store bought treats - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Even store bought treats are filled with all kinds of preservatives, by-products and artificial flavors. I always make my own dog treats and its actually very easy to do. Most homemade basic dog biscuits are simply whole wheat flour, water and dehydrated milk.

Make sure to do your research first to make sure you know what is okay to feed to your dog and what is not, but these treats are much more nutritious and safer to eat than anything store bought, much less anything from China especially.

The web is an awesome resource for researching this if you are interested. Just Google Homemade Dog Treats. I find this a fun way to spend a few hours and my dog certainly enjoys it!

If you do end up buying store bought, remember the more natural ingredients (meat, vegetables, fruit) you can find listed first on the packaging, the better the treat will be for your dog. Anything with a meat first is better, but if it starts with anything such as meat filler or by-products, ground corn, etc, its basically just feeding them junk.

Two different issues - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
The statement you posted sounds like a separate issue from the one the OP posted.

For one, in your statement, it says the trace amounts of antibiotics pose no health risk to animals, but the treats are being recalled because the product has been adulterated.

From what the OP posted, that issue is mysterious illness with unknown cause.

no, not really - p.s.

[ In Reply To ..]
If this is about the terrible Chinese, we need to address the terrible American corporations who manufacture their products there or use byproducts that originate there.

We all "love" Nestle Purina, so why are they sourcing/manufacturing our pet foods in Chinese markets?

Shaving Dogs And CatsApr 28, 2013
I am an animal lover and am all for making them comfortable in the summer months, but please keep in mind that an animal's coat/fur PROTECTS them from the heat/sun.  By shaving them to the skin, you are just setting them up to get even hotter outdoors and possibly burn their skin. Their coat also protects their internal body from shifts of temperature indoors or out. A pet groomer is NOT going to tell you this--they make a good chunk of money shaving hair off pets.  If you don&# ...
