Question about raising chickens

Posted: May 7, 2011

I have always wanted to have a small farm where we could grow/sell plants/vegetables, among other things and have a place with chickens.  I am just curious to know how much it would cost to raise maybe half a dozen or so chickens.

Chickens are relatively cheap, probably cost - sm - ECMT

$15 a month for feed. We have 12 chickens, about $28 a month for superbreeder feed, it varies in price from $12-$14 for a 50# bag of feed. About $30 for a water thing, $20 for a feed holder. In the winter I used a heater for the water and a different water thing (metal) so I don't have to deal with freezing (they are lifesavers), about $70 for those total). Chickens are not a money making thing though.

Thanks - that is exactly what I wanted to know - of course won't be another couple - years, but was just curious

I didn't know if it cost thousands or hundred and was just curious.

Thanks for your reply.

has been wanting to raise chickens now as they have chickens in her classroom that are about to hatch in a week or two : ) We live in the city, so I had to tell her we can't, but I thought it was a cute idea : ) Good luck! : )

My sister works with a lady who raises chickens. She sells her eggs for a dollar a dozen. They are great! They taste great and they give a beautiful color and richness to breads and cakes. They make the most beautiful golden custard! Yesterday I made a gorgeous strawberry rhubarb custard pie. The chickens are grass fed, free range and certified by the state. Go to an organic farming site and find out more. Good luck with this! You are doing the right thing! We would do it too but there is an ordinance against it in our town.

Chicken feed = rodents? - mtmt

We've thought about this too as our small city just passed an ordinance allowing the raising of chickens. Right now I get farm fresh eggs for $2.25 a dozen and they are wonderful. I've heard though that the chicken feed really attracts mice/rats, and I have a very bad mouse phobia so I just don't think I could handle it.

We are in the boonies so get critters on occasion - sm - ECMT

but I don't associate it with the chicken feed in the garage. It is possible that is what attracted them. We have had rats twice, once before the chickens and once about a year ago (had a whole family under the house apparently) who did go after the chicken feed, fixed that by just brining it in the house. Rat poison took care of the rats quick, and it was a special kind so the rats did not smell when dead which was great. Have never had any mice (in garage only) or anything else in the house but the occasional tiny ant in the bathroom, were going after the cough drops, sealed them up in ziplocks and no more ants. We have 3 dogs and a cat too. The dogs kill just about anything that comes in the yard though, as nothing has ever come in the house the poor cat has not had the chance to pounce on anything as yet.

This is good to know so it will help us figure out how to store feed or - just curious

whether to buy smaller amounts more often or what. All good ideas, but unfortunately will have to wait a couple years to get it set up.

I want chickens so bad. DH is still nixing them (he hates their looks and won't touch an egg), but not as much as last year. Maybe by next year. LOL

My foster son has guinea hens and another kind. He's willing to give me a couple for nothing but DH would kill him, so I told him no...for now. He did give me eggs.

I had planned to keep the feed in a galvanized garbage can to keep the furry critters at bay.

The only problem we would have would be the dog (lab retriever) next door. He's always getting out of fenced in yard. He just killed one of the other neighbor's chickens (that were also fenced in) and she was livid to say the least...we have the same breed so that might be a problem even though she's never off her leash.

Anyone Here Raise Chickens? Have Lots Of QuestionsJun 02, 2010
I would love to raise some chickens but DH is against it. He hates them, says they're ugly, doesn't like eating chicken, and hates those "slimy eggs,"  hasn't eaten one in over 50 years, but I'm the opposite.  Do you think I can convince him to let me raise a few? A few questions are: 1.  How many chickens do you have? 2.  If you live in northern states, do you insulate your coop to keep your chickens warm? 3.  How many eggs per week do you get? 4 ...

Update On The Chickens And My Little Girl DogsJul 05, 2010
The chickens visit us daily.  I had been nervous about letting my dogs out when the chickens were here because the dogs go absolutely bezerk when they are at the window.  It they could break that window and get out there, they probably would.  So a few weeks has passed . . . The dogs sit at the window now and just calmy watch the chickens do their thing.  The other day, 2 of the dogs were in the window and I could not get their attention.  Looked out the window and ...

Raising The Debt Limit. A Little Bit Of HistoryApr 14, 2011
After World War II ended, the debt limit was reduced to $275 billion. Because the Korean War was mostly financed by higher taxes rather than by increased debt, the limit remained at $275 billion until 1954. After 1954, the debt limit was reduced twice and increased seven times, until March 1962 when it again reached $300 billion, its level at the end of World War II. Since March 1962, Congress has enacted 74 separate measures that have altered the limit on federal debt. Time Line from 1958-2011 ...

Six Costs Of Not Raising The Debt CeilingJul 26, 2011
What started as hot air has now become a thunder cloud. Should Congress fail to reach a compromise to raise the debt ceiling, a multitude of economic sectors could take a hit—if not come to a screeching halt. We review the effects as forecasted by economists and ask “Should you worry?” The answer, in short: Yes, probably so. 1. Global economy: Asian and European stocks “shuddered,” on Monday, as William Alden of the Huffington Post put it, after Congress f ...

Raising Minimum Wage To $15 An Hour? Dec 08, 2016
Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton wanted the minimum wage raised and that was part of their platform.  Does anyone think raising the minimum wage will help the economy?  My soon to be ex-company, Nuance, fired the California MTs because of minimum wage higher than average in California. Raising The Medicare Eligibility Age Would Cost Patients About Twice As Much,Dec 06, 2012
"When economists and policymakers worry about the long-term fiscal crisis, what they’re mostly worried about is Medicare. That’s why a persistent idea during this fiscal cliff season is raising the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67. It’s an idea that appears superficially to have many virtues. Bringing the Medicare retirement age into line with the Social Security retirement age seems logical. The change is simple to describe to journalists and the public."  & ...

President Obama Says No To Raising Medicare EligibilityFeb 11, 2013
This is a National Journal (a moderate Washington insider publication) article on the "sausage-making" side of this issue, the maneuvering--not the socioeconomics of it. The people who read this journal also read many others, and it's not the last word on anything, but I thought the "what's going on here?" is interesting as part of an ongoing series of maneuvers. It's worth noting that an eligility age increase could be put right back on the table just as quickly. Also, the "chai ...

QuestionMar 22, 2010
Okay, here is a question that I have not seen come up here.  While watching news today this just crossed my mind.  If the government sets an insurance rate you have to pay based upon what you make per year, do they take into account all your other bills, and that sometimes as ICs we don't get any work coming in at times, and then what they set is more than what you can afford (i.e. more money than your paycheck and you still have to pay all your bills).  As ICs I'm sure ...
