Update on the chickens and my little girl dogs

Posted: Jul 5, 2010

The chickens visit us daily.  I had been nervous about letting my dogs out when the chickens were here because the dogs go absolutely bezerk when they are at the window.  It they could break that window and get out there, they probably would.

So a few weeks has passed . . . The dogs sit at the window now and just calmy watch the chickens do their thing.  The other day, 2 of the dogs were in the window and I could not get their attention.  Looked out the window and of course the chickens were here with their little squirrel friend.  It was the cutest thing.  This one white chicken was following the squirrel, not bothering it, just following it.  Too damn cute.

We have about 2 acres so we don't always know when the chickens are on the property.  When my dogs are in the backyard (fenced) and the chickens are out back, the dogs keep running the length of the fence, back and forth, back and forth (real good exercise for them and they sleep soundly at night).  When we let them out front (no fence) the little chihuahua-mix and 1 min pin work together and heard the chickens back to their own yard.  It's such a hoot!  First time I saw it, I was nervous as hell.  I kept yelling at my husband that we can't afford a vet bill right now.  The dogs absolutely love it.  They come back after "hearding" so proud of themselves.  I've never seen little dogs do that before.

My biggest fear was that one of my dogs would take a nip at one of the chickens or one of the chickens take a nip at my dogs but that's not the case.  We are all living together peacefully and neighborly.

Smile

I love it! Just think of all the hours and hours of entertainment you're giving your dogs. I can picture them herding the chicks the way border collies herd sheep! What a hoot!

One Dog Vs. Two Dogs - Update :)Apr 13, 2013
We adopted a standard dachshund today from the humane society.  I found him on Petfinder.com.  We had to drive about an hour away to get him but oh, what a sweetie.  He is only 8 months old but he isn't hyper at all.  Very laid back for a youngster.  (He hasn't even barked once!)  His tail wags constantly and he loves everybody in the family. But best of all, our tweenie dachshund loves him!  She has engaged him in play over and over.  He is stil ...

Girl Scout Co-Leader UpdateDec 19, 2009
Just wanted to let you know that I "grew a pair," quit the troop, turned her in to council about the checking account and feel great!  Thanks to all that responded.  It can be hard for me to stand up to bullies because I doubt myself too much.  So Merry Christmas, time to relax! ...

Question About Raising ChickensMay 07, 2011
I have always wanted to have a small farm where we could grow/sell plants/vegetables, among other things and have a place with chickens.  I am just curious to know how much it would cost to raise maybe half a dozen or so chickens.      ...

Anyone Here Raise Chickens? Have Lots Of QuestionsJun 02, 2010
I would love to raise some chickens but DH is against it. He hates them, says they're ugly, doesn't like eating chicken, and hates those "slimy eggs,"  hasn't eaten one in over 50 years, but I'm the opposite.  Do you think I can convince him to let me raise a few? A few questions are: 1.  How many chickens do you have? 2.  If you live in northern states, do you insulate your coop to keep your chickens warm? 3.  How many eggs per week do you get? 4 ...

One Dog Vs. Two DogsApr 05, 2013
We have had our tweenie dachshund girl forabout 10 months.  She is almost 2 years old.  She is dearly loved, so obedient and smart and snuggly.  Lately I have been wondering about getting another dog, solely for the purpose of a playmate for her, so she can wrestle and get more exercise during the day.  I work at home so a lot of her day she is in her bed beside my desk sleeping, or she looks out the window at the yard and watches for dangerous folks near our yard (haha!), gr ...

Dogs With Allergies...Feb 23, 2012
My dogs definitely cannot have poultry or corn, and wheat is questionable.  I am trying to find dental chews/biscuits.  I'm using Zuke's Z-bones right now but the problem is that one of my dogs is just biting/breaking it into chunks and swallowing the chunks, not much good for his teeth and gums!  He chews his crunchy dog food and regular treats so I was hoping maybe I could find some dental biscuits of some sort, but everything I'm finding has wheat or chicken ...

Designer DogsNov 16, 2009
I have a plain old garden variety Rat Terrier. Best known as Teddy Roosevelt's favorite, the RCA dog, and a common dog on farms because they're such good little ratters. But we saw two "Designer Dogs" last week that were so funny. One was a Chug (Chihuahua and Pug combination) and the other two were Puggles (Pug and Beagle combinations.) All of them were cute as could be, but when did mixing breeds stop being mutts and start being Designer Dogs? Is it just because a mutt is a result ...

For Those Of You Who Think That Dogs Can Be Trusted.Oct 26, 2010
Humans are more important than a stupid dog!  I don't care if they think it was neglect.  The fact remains the dog killed and never had shown signs of aggression!  Well guess what???  It sure showed signs of aggression this time, didn't it???  This is just like I thought...  dogs can never, ever, ever be trusted!  EVER!!!!  ...

Does Anyone Else Have Dogs That Are Smarter Than Them?Jul 17, 2010
I live in the sticks so don't have passersby, have no friends or relatives so I don't get company, and work 14 hours a day so I don't have a lot of time for my little canine companions through the week.  Therefore on weekends, we kinda hang out together.  This includes taking them to the store when I go grocery shopping and they wait in the car, people-watching from whatever window they choose to gaze out of.  During the heat of summer, though, I leave them home.&nb ...

New Channel Going To The DogsJul 15, 2013
Plenty of things will grab a dog’s attention: squirrels, tennis balls, funny smells, other dogs. But a TV channel?Absolutely, say the makers of DogTV, the first cable network to deliver 24-hour programming for dogs. The idea, they say, is that flipping on the channel while you go out for the day will keep your pet stimulated, entertained and relaxed. Call it “Sesame Street” for those who will never learn their ABCs.The shows on DogTV are actually three- to six-minute segments f ...

Itchy DogsFeb 19, 2014
Has anyone tried the new "miracle" drug for itchy dogs, Apoquel? It had remarkable results in Europe, and was finally approved for the US in January. My vet is impressed with it, and says he sees results within 4 hours. I was concerned about where the drug is metabolized, since my dog is very old, and I don't want to give him anything that's metabolized in the liver or kidneys. This is apparently very safe, and the only possible reaction is diarrhea which quickly resolves after a da ...

Two Dogs DiningJul 28, 2017
I was on YouTube and my eye caught a short video of 2 dogs dining. It was something that had me LOL, so funny! How these 2 dogs were made to keep still and not go running off is amazing, but it's well worth checking it out if you need some comic relief in your life...Just search for Two Dogs Dining. Apparently, there are several different ones. The one I saw showed them in a kitchen? Too funny... ...

Flea Treatment For DogsDec 02, 2011
Hi Everyone,   What kind of treatment works best for your dogs?  My 3 little doggie children are having the darnest time keeping fleas away.  The last treatment I tried only kept them away for about a week or so; can't think of the name, but it's the one you can get at Walmart.  Was thinking of giving Frontline a try . . .     ...

How To Introduce Dogs To Kids?Jun 11, 2010
I have gotten serious with my boyfriend to the point that we are considering moving in together.  I have 3 children (6, 5, and 3) and he has 2 small dachsunds that are pretty much his world.  My kids are with their dad for the summer and will be back shortly and the only thing I'm worried about is if his dogs will be okay with my kids.  I know one of them is just as loving as she can be, but the other is very picky about certain people.  Everyone I have introduced to her ...

Question About Male DogsJun 02, 2012
I have a male puppy who is about 9 months old. I have only had females so this is a real change for me! He likes to pee on everything. I realize he is marking his turf. The problem is...this is MY turf! If I have him neutered, will that stop this behavior? Also, will it make him less hyper? I know he is a puppy and is supposed to be energetic but it's beyond that. He may just be high-strung but he just does not stop! I am going to have him neutered for the health benefit anyway but was just ...

Annoying Yapping Dogs.Feb 14, 2013
A neighbor of mine keeps having a visitor over who leaves their car parked right under my window and leaves their 2 highly annoying, ear piercing yappers in the car--these dogs are driving me INSANE, and I am beginning to realize that these dogs should NEVER have survived the evolution process!!!!   ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRG! ...

Shaving Dogs And CatsApr 28, 2013
I am an animal lover and am all for making them comfortable in the summer months, but please keep in mind that an animal's coat/fur PROTECTS them from the heat/sun.  By shaving them to the skin, you are just setting them up to get even hotter outdoors and possibly burn their skin. Their coat also protects their internal body from shifts of temperature indoors or out. A pet groomer is NOT going to tell you this--they make a good chunk of money shaving hair off pets.  If you don&# ...

Update And Asking For More Help. Sep 24, 2010
I posted this  a couple months ago. Basically, it's about being depressed, having socially anxiety (or maybe avoidant personality disorder). http://forum.mtstars.com/245664.html Well, instead of getting help then, I decided to get another MT job to try one more time. And I am getting worse. I realize I need to get help now, or my life is not going to go anywhere. I'm starting to have more suicidal thoughts and anxiety attacks. I don't have money to go to a doctor. I know I ...

E-cig UpdateJul 26, 2010
Since this thread started last week, I ordered, received, and have been using e-cigs for 4 days.  They're awesome.  I've smoked since a teenager - before cigarettes were taboo.  Since working at home, I was smoking 2+ packs a day.  I'm now smoking maybe 8 cigarettes a day, with absolutely no withdrawal.  When I smoke a real cig now, it's more of a choice rather than a necessity.  When I run out of my cigs, I won't be buying a new supply ...

Update On HJ Res. 15Jan 07, 2013
Did some more research on this and apparently Rep. Jose Serrano (D-NY) is simply a fanatic about repealing the 22nd amendment.  He actually has tried this before (HJ Res. 5) back in 2009, so I'm guessing it'll get about as far this time as it did last time. I would, however, like to have a discussion about the pros and cons of this bill - apparently there are some that would like to see this amendment repealed.  I'm actually for more term limits - senate, house, supreme ...

Update On MILJan 13, 2013
As you know, she has a new diagnosis with Alzheimer's and am getting her started on coconut oil,  well coconut oil gelcaps, as that was what was available at the store at the time.   Anyway, not a moment too soon.  Just needed to vent a little.  Where to start!  SHE GAVE ALL HER CHRISTMAS PRESENTS FROM ME AWAY!!!!  Her greatest need at this time was warm winter sweaters, sweatshirts, layering pieces like turtlenecks and long-sleeved Tees to wear underneath ...

Just An UpdateAug 06, 2013
I posted a few times on the prayer board about being abused by my sister for as long as I can remember.  Several of you encouraged me to see a therapist, and today was my first visit.   I chose the therapist's name from a list of providers given to me by my insurance company.  I did not know anything about her.  I can say based on our session today that I am extremely pleased.  She is just wonderful.  It was a very difficult session for me, having to give ...

Update On New JobJun 25, 2014
Hi all in MT land: I am here just to stop in and say hi. I had posted awhile back about giving my notice and moving onto a new (and better) job. My last day with my MTSO was Friday the 13th. I started my new job June 9th and stayed on to help finish out the pay period. My last day I posted a message on IM about it being my last day and goodbye everyone kind of thing and didn't hear a peep. Not one message. I don't care, it's not like I was expecting anything, but not even one m ...

Another Update On MeMay 18, 2016
Well, my legs and ankles are mostly normal now. I think I lost 10-15 pounds and took finally four Torsemide two morning and two in afternoon to do it. I have diastolic heart failure and that plus my low potassium threw me into a bad spell with swelling that would not go down. I do feel some better though. I still have the hives and now they are really bothering me badly. I went to the drug store and finally got some CVS brand Allegra 180 mg. I found reviews saying it was good for hives since ...

Floppy-eared Dogs With Ear Infections? Aug 05, 2012
Does anyone have any nutritional advice or home remedy for my mixed breed/predominantly pointer/hound who has chronic ear infections?  My vet gave us this stuff and we are washing his ears out every 2 days.  (Cannot wash more often as it dries his ears out too much).  We also have some ear drops, but he still scratches at his ears like he is being tortured.  There are days when I consider clipping his ears on the top of his head with clothes pins just to keep them aired out.& ...
