SS Question To Those That Are In The Know

To anyone who has any knowledge of Social Security benefits, I am wondering if an ex-spouse of a male veteran who has passed away can obtain "survivor benefits" (?) from Social Security if she has his children...even though he had been remarried at the time of his demise?? Children are all over 21. I have heard that there is something like this and if so, how would I go about obtaining it? thanks in advance for anyone's help.

[ In Reply To ..]I believe if you were married to the man for 10 years, when you reach retirement age, if you can draw less than 1/2 of what he would have drawn on your own benefits, you can draw on his. Just call their office and they can tell you in just a few minutes.

I was married to him for 13 years, and have three children by him. but I was told previously that I do not have to wait until retirement age to collect his benefits. That was what I was wondering about mostly. Thanks again. I am 60, so not close to retiring yet.

[ In Reply To ..]You can file for his benefits since you were married to him for >10 years. Just make sure you have HIS SS# before you call. That is one of hte first things they want to know.

[ In Reply To ..]My husband passed away seven years ago. Each of my three kids received benefits until they turned 18, and I received survivors benefits until the youngest turned 16. I was told at the time that when I turn 60, I can claim my husband's SS benefits, of course at a reduced rate if I waited until longer. When I look at what he made all his life and what I have made as an MT, of course I'll choose his benefits. And of course I'll take it when I turn 60 - what if I don't make it past then???? The local SS office was very easy to deal with as long as you have an appointment.

[ In Reply To ..]Thanks for your experience. It is more encouraging now. When I have time, I will give them a call. I don't think our SS office takes appoinments. it is a first come first serve type thing so I may be sitting there for a while.

[ In Reply To ..]I also found out from a friend that I could do at age 60, otherwise I had no idea. I never remarried but have worked all my life. Now with times so tough with the economy and all, I am glad I am collecting it. I am now 62. I looked on the web site I believe for SS and called the main number and they themselves make the appointment for me at my local office in Minnesota. I had to have his death certificate, our marriage license and my birth certificate. I don't think I had his SS# but they found it on their own system. I met with a woman for that appointment and received my first check within a week if you can believe that.
You said he was married at the time of his death... be sure and tell SS that as that may affect out eligibility, although if you had children with him it may be in your favor. Good luck!
