Does anyone have a fear of flying? Any tricks/advice to help calm my nerves?

Posted: Feb 2, 2016

I am getting on a plane in a few weeks and my anxiety is already through the roof about it.  I've flown many times, but with each time, my fear grows and grows.  My doctor prescribed me a Xanax to take before each flight, but I've never taken Xanax and I really hate taking medication because a lot of times it makes me nauseous.  Any else have this fear?

My girlfriend has a very severe case of flying phobia. I wish I could remember the title of the book she read, but it pretty much cured her. She also takes some Xanax before getting on the plane, and between the 2 of those, she's good to go.

The book was written by a pilot. I will try to find out the name of the book. On a quick Google, all I could find was one written in the 1970's, and it's not the one my friend read.

I get a little flippy when there's turbulence, and on take-off and landing. I just happened to have a retired pilot sitting in the seat next to me on a plane recently when I was flying alone, and anytime anything happened, he explained exactly what was going on. I am pretty sure the book addresses all that.

Good luck to you. Oh, I can get nauseated with some pills, but not Xanax. You could try a Xanax before the flight date, so you know exactly what to expect in the way of feelings. I've only needed it a couple of times in my life, but it's not a high. It just calms you. See if your doc will give you one for before the flight. I'm sure he's not giving you a full 1 mg in one pill. If he is, you can ask for a 0.5 or lower.

I'm petrified to fly, although I do it because I want to be able to go to new places. I'm going to Hawaii with my husband in October all the way from the east coast. The last time I flew I actually took Xanax and it worked really well and didn't give me any side effects at all. It didn't even make me tired, just relaxed and not anxious at all. I would maybe try the Xanax before you fly just to see if you get any side effects of the medication. I hope you find something that works.

Here's what I - did

Will probably sound a little nutso but it REALLY helped me.

I started watching take off/landing videos on youtube. There are 100s of them. People filming the push back, taxi to the runway, the sound of the engines spooling up and the take off. Some have the entire airport experience, boarding, etc. ALL of that made me very nervous.

When I first started watching, just the sounds of the plane being loaded with baggage would give me a nervous feeling in my gut and then taxiing to runway my palms would sweat and my heart would race. But, the more I watched, the more desensitized I became and the sounds no longer set off any kind of trigger for me.

I also watched the videos from the cockpit to see just what the pilots are doing up there, etc., and educated myself about flight in general.

You can probably find a take off video from the airport where you are leaving from and a landing video at the airport you are traveling to.

It really worked for me. Good luck!

Question About Little Bugs Flying Around BreadNov 15, 2010
Okay, last week I bought 2 sourdough rolls to make a little bowl to put some clam chowder in.  Got home and froze them in the bag they came in.  I took them out last night to thaw out and today I looked at the bag, which was still sealed shut (no holes in the bag anywhere), and I saw what looked like fruit flies (about 5 or 6 or so).  I took them out of the bag and put them on a plate and covered with saran wrap.   So here's my stupid question...are these sourdough rol ...

Weird-looking cars are a dime a dozen. Far less common are weird-looking cars that can also fly AND have approval from the Federal Aviation Administration. Indeed, as far as we know, there's only one of those babies: The Terrafugia Transition. The private aircraft/funky-looking car has been in the news before. But the recent announcement that it's going into production sparked mega-searches on the Web. Almost immediately, online lookups for "terrafugia transition" and "terrafug ...

LDB's Biggest FearJul 07, 2011
If you will recall, Ms. Burdick's greatest fear was "common sense being lost."  That's exactly what happened.  I just heard a woman who was protesting outside the courthouse and she summed up what I feel completely.  She said that jurors should be instructed strongly on using common sense, and not just looking for reasonable doubt.  I know this was mentioned during closing arguments, but it went out the window.  I feel this jury failed us.  If common ...

People In Nursing Homes Have The Most To Fear From Ryan's PlanApr 14, 2011
