Opinions needed (not MT related)

Posted: Sep 28, 2012

I feel like I am living in the the Twilight Zone here and am super stressed out and just wondering what other people think. We have been battling with the school over nursing services. The school decided to cut one of the nurse positions and now cannot cover everything that they need to cover. My friend and I both have children with type 1 diabetes. They are too young to handle it on their own. We live in a state that has a nurse practice act that says that only an RN can adminiser insulin at school. We have told them that, but they have gone behind our backs and had a secretary at the school (who has had no training on diabetes or insulin whatsoever) administer the insulin when the nurse was not in the building. This secretary has been arrested for DWI and marijuana possession last year! The school thinks they are perfectly following the law and that is totally acceptable. We think otherwise. Am I going crazy or is this just not right?

I know this happens to other people around the country, too. It is possible that you could ask for an Individualized Education Plan. Here is a copy/paste of what someone said in an online support group I follow:

"Ask that the child have an IEP meeting for other handicapped. Go to the head of the student support team now, ask that the meeting be scheduled ASAP and have it written into the IEP that they must make lunch accomadation for him and medication accomadation. The local school may not like it so go over their head to the county special ed coordinator if you have to do so. Special Services are not only for children with learning disabilities. A 504 plan may cover it because 504's are for children with special medical needs. I would actually begin by contacting the county special services department and asking what procedures must you go through to get these accomadations. They may have to call and train the school about the process to go through."

Good look to you in being your child's advocate.

Thanks - Stressed mom

We already have 504 plans in place. The school knows the law but is choosing to do this anyway. Probably time to get the lawyers involved.

Get your child's Dr involved. Have hiim write letter. Maybe - he can advise other options, also. nm

This sounds terrible! I don't think you are - crazy at all. I can't believe

[ In Reply To ..]
that secretary is even allowed to be working at a school. Our school requires fingerprinting and background checks even for parents volunteers. I can't believe they would allow a person without medical training to administer insulin to your child. It seems like they are setting themselves up for a lawsuit. This is crazy!

Thank you - Stressed mom

At least that gives me reassurance that I am in fact not going crazy. Dealing with the school certainly make me feel that way!

Here's an idea. - sm

I would complain about the situation to someone in higher authority. For example, if this is a public school, go to the district or the state superintendent. If it is a private or charter school go to the board of directors. I would imagine someone higher up is going to realize that it is huge liability for the school to be doing it this way and can get it fixed.

My suggestion - MT

My suggestion to you, if it is possible, is to get your child on the insulin pump. It is the best thing since sliced bread if you ask me. My daughter is type 1 and has been since she is 9. The pump has all the configurations already figured into it. All you do is enter in your carbs, push a few buttons, and it's done. If you can pack a cold lunch to help your child figure out carbs and explain to them how to use the pump, you will have no reason to need the nurse.

That is nuts....I'd call your courthouse and talk - sm - XXX

your local DA there, if it is illegal, REPORT IT...either to local police or DA. Also contact the school board, the school is in violation of state law...do they want a lawsuit? Very surprised that secretary still has her job, I also work for our local school (sub driver) and very rigorous process, finger printing, reference, criminal background check, etc. Hard to believe a school would be so stupid...our school is so politically correct it is ridiculous, but they follow every rule/law to the letter. They do bend over a bit and give people plenty of chances, as long as they follow protocol. I know I would still have a job even with any accidents or tickets, IF I report them to them and follow school protocol, maybe this secretary followed their rules and since she is not teaching, that is why she can keep her job. But she certainly should not be administering insulin shots.

But get loud, contact a lawyer, write some letters, nothing is gonna change about the situation unless you get vocal. Call your local news too. Good luck.

More Funeral Opinions NeededJan 06, 2010
Recently involved in funeral choices for older couple who did not keep in touch with first marriage children. I almost insisted children's names be placed at least in the obitand notified a few to ask them to get in touch with siblings as we did not know where they were. Widow took out children's cities, states, etc. residence. Some children showed up; some did not. I did the best I could because I felt it was imperative these kids know their parent passed. Widow made announcement ...

Just Thinking About Something Related To Politics And MTMar 15, 2011
Wouldn't it be great if we had an MT union (not going to happen; too late for that) and we see headlines that say, "We are troubled because union MTs make 12% MORE than non-union MTs."   Just a thought. I think that might be a very good thing. ...

This caught my eye last night, but there was too much good stuff going on to post this. I Need Some OpinionsDec 31, 2009
I have a friend I just connected with who lives across the country.  She lived next door to me.  We grew up together, played together, and went to school together.  Went to her wedding and then she moved and I lost touch.  Anyway (sorry to get side tracked, that has nothing to do with my post).  Anyway…when I told her what I do (MT), she told me her daughter took 3 classes but couldn’t afford to finish the training, and asked me my opinions of the MT field a ...

I have had a lot of problems with my breasts over the years, have had 3 biopsies in the left and 1 in the right but thank God they have all be negative.  However, over the last several weeks I have been experiencing something different, pain and burning in my right breast along with swelling (not a lot but enough for me to notice).  I have performed self-examinations and other than exquisite tenderness throughout the breast I cannot find any masses (I actually do have a 6 mm nodul ...

Opinions - Is He Just Not That Into Me - Or Something Else? SmMay 17, 2010
Ok... so I met this guy about a month ago - I am the one going out with a guy almost 11 years younger.  He's a very nice guy! Every time I see him he is nice and we talk literally for hours.  He told me off the bat he is not much of a phone person so he doesn't call much, but he sends a few texts every day.  At first he wanted to see me several days a week... one of my friends called him my "boyfriend" though and I think it freaked him out. He had told me he was definite ...

I Could Use Some Opinions Jun 25, 2010
Hey everyone, this is my first time posting on this board, but I thought I'd see if I could get some input. My ex husband met this woman and moved her in with him after only knowing her for 1-1/2 months. I wasn't real thrilled with the idea because we have two kids and joint custody, so they spend half their time at their dad's. Honestly, I was feeling a little jealous about some other woman spending time with my kids. I met her and she seemed nice, so I got used to the idea and ...

Opinions, PleaseMay 26, 2013
Hi all, What do you think about people who pray for, what I term, silly things? Like what color drapes to buy, what shoes to wear that day, etc. I find it rather silly because people have to take controls over their own lives. I do not believe in "handing everything over" to the higher power. Our higher power (who I term God) gave us brains and will and power to make decisions. I don't call this an abuse of prayer, I just don't understand why some people can't think for themsel ...

Opinions From Cat PeopleJan 03, 2012
I need a serious opinion.  We have friends who have 2 cats, full-breed, who they have had daily bonding with for a good 2 years.  Said friends are going on a 3-month trip out of the country and are boarding the cats here in the states.  The one cat (before owners have even left) is showing signs of something isn't right--getting out of the house and not duly returning home, peeing smack dab on top of the bed.).   These cats are brother and sister, and will be somewh ...

Need Opinions Please About School (sm)Jan 24, 2011
I am currently looking into returning to school like so many other MTs out there.  There are programs where you can get an Associates Degree in Healthcare Management (basically medical records), which I am really not interested in because, as I see it, most hospitals are trying to cut down their medical records departments to as slim of staff as possible, plus with the integration of EMR, I just do not see this being a lucrative field.  IF, big big IF here, I were to enter into this pr ...
